Rob Thurlby beats two Malaysians to win the Brunswick Euro Challenge

No. 2 seed Rob Thurlby (pictured left), England, defeated No. 1 seed Adrian Ang, Malaysia, 253-248, en route to win his first career European Bowling Tour title in the 2010 Brunswick Euro Challenge and the 13.000 Euro top prize.

For the first time in the history of the EBT the stepladder finals were broadcasted live on Eurosport 2. In the opening match, No. 3 Zulmazran Zulkifli, Malaysia, topped No. 4 seed Ildemaro Ruiz, 230-202, before he was eliminated by Thurlby in the semifinal, 233-194.
Ang received 7.500 Euro for second place, Zulkifli got 4.750 Euro and Ruiz pocketed 3.500 Euro for fourth.
2008 European ranking champion Nina Flack, Sweden, was the best of 97 women in the 448-player field and pocketed an extra prize of 1.300 Euro. With the 150 ranking points from the BEC, Flack becomes the new women's ranking leader.

Mai Ginge Jensen, Denmark, who won the women's division in last year's BEC, was second worth 1.100 Euro, while Krista Pöllänen (far right), Finland, pocketed 840 Euro for third place.
A total of eight 300 games were rolled during the Brunswick Euro Challenge, seven by men (Kimmo Lehtonen, Finland; Mike Fagan, Norm Duke, Parker Bohn III, Bill O'Neill, all United States; Mathieu Berges, Switzerland; and Fredrik Øhrgaard, Denmark) and one by a woman, Evgeniya Smirnova, Russia.
All but Berges and Smirnova had paid the entry fee for the 300-game Pot Play. Parker Bohn III (pictured right), a 32-time PBA champion and 2-time PBA Player of the Year won a highly entertaining shoot-out after the stepladder finals en route to pocket the 3.100 Euro winner-takes-all prize.

In the opening match, No. 4 seed Ildemaro Ruiz (left), Venezuela and No. 3 Zulmazran Zulkifli, Malaysia squared off. Both players started with three strikes in a row before Venezuelan national team member bowed out and spared a single-pin leave.
Lomg-time Malaysian national team member Zulkifli took the lead with a strike in the 4th, which was followed by two spares. Ruiz had a single-pin miss in the 5th frame but rebounded with a double in the 6th and 7th.
Zulkifli countered with a double in frames 7 and 8 but opened in his 9th frame. Ruiz gave the advantage back when he opened in the 8th frame. He got key strike in the 9th and could have forced Zulkifli to double in the 10th but when he left four pins standing on his next ball, the match was over. Zulkifli (right) struck out for a 230-202 win.
Thurlby (on the right) carried the momentum into the title match which was as high scoring as the entire tournament. Thurlby started with four strikes in a row to take an early lead. Reigning Asian Masters champ Adrian Ang (left), Malaysia, had a spare in his first frame, then reeled off a five-bagger to take a 4-pin lead mid-game as Thurlby got another six-count but again spared it.
Thurlby regained the lead with another 4-bagger in frames 6-9, but Ang was close behind with 9-spare and a double. When Ang got another 9-spare and a strike in the 10th frame, Thurlby needed to mark to win. He got nine on his first ball, made the single-pin spare and sealed the victory with a 8-count on his fill ball.

The Brunswick Euro Challenge will be held from March 5-14, 2010 at 28-laner Le Plaza Bowling in Saint Maximin near Paris, France. The tournament is the fifth event of the 2010 European Bowling Tour and one of the Tour's "Gold" tournaments.
Since the Ankara Open and the Austria Challenge have been cancelled, the 2010 EBT Tour features 2 EBT Platinum tournament (formerly Premier), 6 EBT Gold tournaments (formerly Major), 7 EBT Silver tournaments (formerly Challenger) and 4 EBT Satellite tournaments (new category).
Players will compete for total prize money of 90,000 Euro (currently about US$123,250), which includes special prizes for "Women" and "B Bowlers". The tournament winner will receive the 13.000 Euro top prize.

There is also a special side event called "300-Game Pot Play". All players who have paid a 50 Euro entry fee in advance and roll a 300 game during the tournament will determine the winner in a one-ball roll-off at the end of the tournament. The winner is guaranteed a minimum of 2,500 Euro.
2-time PBA champion Mike Fagan (left), United States, is the defending champion. The 29-year-old righthander will be targeting to make his third consecutive BEC title match. Mai Ginge Jensen (right), Denmark, finished third last year to win the women ranking.
For the third consecutive year, the 2010 Brunswick Euro Challenge sponsored by Brunswick Bowling will be organized by Brunswick distributor Valcke Bowling.

Thurlby took a commanding lead when he reeled off a four bagger in frames 4-7. Zulkifli (left) was unable to double alternating strikes and spares in frames 4-6 and when he failed to convert a split in the 7th the match was practically over.
Thurlby finished the match with spare, strike, spare and 9-count to cruise to victory, 233-194.

The Brunswick Euro Challenge will be held from March 5-14, 2010 at 28-laner Le Plaza Bowling in Saint Maximin near Paris, France. The tournament is the fifth event of the 2010 European Bowling Tour and one of the Tour's "Gold" tournaments.Since the Ankara Open and the Austria Challenge have been cancelled, the 2010 EBT Tour features 2 EBT Platinum tournament (formerly Premier), 6 EBT Gold tournaments (formerly Major), 7 EBT Silver tournaments (formerly Challenger) and 4 EBT Satellite tournaments (new category).
Players will compete for total prize money of 90,000 Euro (currently about US$123,250), which includes special prizes for "Women" and "B Bowlers". The tournament winner will receive the 13.000 Euro top prize.

There is also a special side event called "300-Game Pot Play". All players who have paid a 50 Euro entry fee in advance and roll a 300 game during the tournament will determine the winner in a one-ball roll-off at the end of the tournament. The winner is guaranteed a minimum of 2,500 Euro. 2-time PBA champion Mike Fagan (left), United States, is the defending champion. The 29-year-old righthander will be targeting to make his third consecutive BEC title match. Mai Ginge Jensen (right), Denmark, finished third last year to win the women ranking.
For the third consecutive year, the 2010 Brunswick Euro Challenge sponsored by Brunswick Bowling will be organized by Brunswick distributor Valcke Bowling. In addition to sponsoring the event, Brunswick will be conducting seminar and training sessions for bowlers, coaches, center mechanics, center managers and proprietors. The 2010 Brunswick Euro Challenge will be contested on a 39 feet long sport pattern of medium difficulty (MS Excel file).
A total of 64 players qualified for the finals on Sunday, March 14. The top 16 players received one bye and will seeded 1-16 in Round 2.
The following 48 players qualified for Round 1:
Those 48 bowled six games starting from scratch to cut to the top 16, who will meet the top 16 qualifiers in the first match play round. Match play is best-of-three games single-elimination. The No. 1 seed will take on No. 32, No. 2 bowls No. 31, etc.
The field will be cut to 16, 8 and then four, who will determine the champion in a stepladder final.
The stepladder finals of the 2010 Brunswick Euro Challenge will be broadcasted live on Eurosport 2 Sunday, March 14 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. CET. Additional to the live broadcast, Eurosport 2 will air at least two more re-broadcasts in the weeks following the live coverage. Eurosport Asia-Pacific will also run the BEC 2010 final several times.
