Qualifying complete for 2006 USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships
03/26/06
Stefanie Nation picked an opportune time to roll her first 300-game in nearly seven years. The much-heralded University of Central Florida senior opened Friday's six-game qualifying round with a perfect game, helping her solidify a spot at the 2006 USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships, which will be held May 22-23 at Olympic Lanes in Milwaukee.
"That was an unreal feeling," said Nation, who accomplished the feat on the challenging USBC Sport Bowling lane conditions. "It gave me the chills to accomplish that on a Sport pattern. It was so nice to have my teammates there to witness it."
The USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships, which debuted at Olympic Lanes in May 2004, features the top 16 male and top 16 female collegiate bowlers in the country competing for national titles. The event replaced the Association of College Unions-International National Championships as the premier individual college bowling event supported by the USBC Collegiate program.
Qualifying for the national finals was held Friday at four Sectional Qualifier sites: Allentown, Pa.; Chattanooga, Tenn.; Fairview Heights, Ill., and Fort Worth, Texas. All participants bowled six games with total pinfall determining final standings. The top four finishers in each division (male and female) at each Sectional Qualifier site advance to the 2006 USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships.
Nation, a three-time U.S. Junior Amateur champion and current Team USA and Junior Team USA member, finished tied for third in the Allentown Sectional with Penn State's Elysia Current, the women's collegiate Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year in 2003-04 and current Junior Team USA member. Both finished with 1,208, a 201.33 average.
It will be the third straight appearance at the USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships for Nation, who lost in the semifinals a year ago. She won't be alone in representing Central Florida, however, as teammates Brigette Harrelson and Michelle Carcagente finished first and second, respectively, in the Allentown Sectional.
"Hopefully good things will happen at the national finals for one of us," Nation said. "We're going to go out and do our best, proudly representing our school. I hope the third time is the charm for me."
Joining Nation, Current, Harrelson and Carcagente at the 2006 USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships are sectional winners Tracy Miller of Pikeville, current Junior Team USA member Michelle Quirk of Fresno State and Wichita State's Olivia Sandham, current Team USA member and 2002 U.S. Junior Amateur champion.
Lindenwood's Jessica Lesagonicz and California-Davis' Jaime Miller advanced to the national finals for the second consecutive year. Also qualifying were Cincinnati's Stephanie Ehlers, Virginia Tech's Mindy Pancoast, Purdue's Lisa Hunt, Morehead State's Melissa Brownie, New Mexico's Brandy Silva, West Texas A&M's Courtney Ward and Florida State's Leslie Rapach.
The men's field at the national finals is highlighted by sectional champions Daniel Vick of Rochester Tech, Jason Blevins of Texas Tech, Kevin Tabron of Wichita State and Lindenwood's Brian Valenta, who was the runner-up in 2004 and a member of Junior Team USA in 2003 and 2005. Vick is a member of Junior Team USA in 2006.
Joining them is Saginaw Valley State's Anthony LaCaze, who will be making his third straight appearance at the national finals, and East Tennessee State's Aaron Murray, a Junior Team USA 2004 member.
Also qualifying from the men's division is Martin Methodist's Daniel Hannagan, Pikeville's Kevin Kovash, Sacred Heart's David Kipperman, Saginaw Valley State's Dan MacLelland, Purdue's Collin Kerschner, Wichita State's Steve Elson, Western New England's Vito Genova, Fresno State's Matt Robinson, Newman's Brandon Frazier and Arizona State's Brandon Baker, who shot a 238 in the final game to beat out 2004 champion Cory Simmons of Newman for the fourth and final spot out from the Fort Worth Sectional.
At the national finals, all 16 participants in each division bowl eight games to determine seeding for the match play competition. In match play, participants compete in a best-of-five, single-elimination bracket, with winners in each division being crowned national champions of the 2006 USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships.
