2010 European Senior Bowling Championships are underway in Vienna

The 2010 European Senior Bowling Championships are underway at Plus Bowling, Brunswick Bowling Hernals, and Brunswick Bowling Prater in Vienna, Austria. 947 senior bowlers - 289 women and 659 men - from 21 countries will compete over six days for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles, Doubles, Trios and Masters.
In the men's division, Bo Heden from Sweden posted the field-best 1386 series, an average of 231, to take the early lead in Group B. Italians Giancarlo Querin and Rosario Bellamonte took the pole in Group A and C with 1324 and 1306 (including 7 pins handicap each game), respectively.
Their compatriots Giuseppe Vesentin and Rossano Messina teamed up to lead in Doubles Men A with 2555 pinfall total. Another Italian duo, Emilio Ruggiero and Francesco Morabito were the frontrunners in Group B with 2595. Jack Navarro and Alain Aubert, France, sit in the driver's seat in Group C with 2604 pinfall total or a scratch average of 217.
Local bowlers Heinrich Bittner, Manfred Panzenböck and Wolfgang Hauska averaged 218.6 to set the pace in the Men's Trios event with 3935 pinfall total.
John Juha Löfgren, Denmark had 1227 in Doubles and 1379 in Trios to lead Group A in All Events with 2606 12-game total. Israel Tener, Israel, leads Group B with 2684 and an average of 223.7 for 12 games while Bellomonte is atop the leaderboard in Group B with 2641 including handicap.
On the women's side, Christine Gablek used a high game of 279 to take the lead in Singles Group A with 1254 and an average of 209. Finns Eija-Liisa Lähdemäki (1217) and Kaisu-Leena Lummaa (1155 including 6 pins handicap each game) are atop Group B and C, respectively.
Pat Holmes, Ireland and Antonella Graziano, Italy, are in charge of Doubles Group a with a combined pinfall total of 2274. Ireland's Yvonne Randell and Pat Cummins lead Group B with 2254 while Paula Eriksson and Christina Palmroos, Finland, had 2244 to move to the top of Group B.
Holmes and Randell also lead All Events Group B and C with 2294 and 2322 including handicap. Rosaria Matrullo, Italy, set the tone in Graup A with 2259 and an average of 188.3.
The participating countries are Belgium, Catalonia, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the host country of Austria.
Each division, men and women, is divided into three age groups. Group A is for players from 50-57 years of age, Group B includes players 58-64 years of age and players who are 65 years and older will compete in Group C. The age on the day of competition will be used to determine the age group.
All players will bowl six games each in Singles, Doubles and Trios over three days. Doubles and Trios may consist of players from different age groups. The Doubles must compete in the age group of the youngest player in the team while there are no age groups in Trios, just men and women Trios. Mixed teams, men and women in one team, are not allowed.
The organizing committee is allowed to form "international teams" in Doubles and Trios of players from different countries who haven't found any partners from their own country. Other than booster teams, the international teams will compete for the medals.
Participants in Group C will receive 1 pin bonus per game for each full year over 65 years (for example, a 70-year-old gets five 5 handicap per game).
The top 6 players in each group after 18 games (Singles, Doubles, Trios) will advance to the Masters finals at Plus Bowling on Friday, June 25th. The finalists will bowl five games round robin match play with the All Events total (no medals will be given in All Events) being carried forward. 20 pins bonus per win, 10 for a tie. Additional 5 pins bonus for games from 200-249 and 10 pins bonus for 250-300.
