Defeats Junior Team USA's Brittni Hamilton to win Girls Singles

2010WYCGirlsSinglesKimYeonJu.jpgKim Yeon-Ju1, Korea (pictured left), defeated Brittni Hamilton, United States, in the championship match of Girls Singles, 192-155, to win the first gold medal of the 11th World Youth Championships Sunday at Tali Bowl in Helsinki, Finland.

In the semifinals Hamilton, the No. 4 seed, eliminated top seeded Carmen Haandrikman, Netherlands, 60-40 in rolloff after a 188-188 tie, while Kim, seeded second, topped Diana Zavjalova, Latvia, 214-204.

Hamilton, who has won USBC Junior Gold Championships last week, earned the silver medal. Haandrikman and Zavjalova shared the bronze.

2010WYCGirlsSinglesTop4.jpgHaandrikman led the field of 107 girls (must not have reached the age of 21 years on January 1, 2010) from 33 countries after six games preliminaries on short oil with 1389 pinfall total and an average of 231.50. The Dutch, who broke the championship record held by Sandra Gongora, Mexico (1387 in 2008) by two pins, earned the No. 1 seed and led the top 4 players into the playoffs.

The four finalists from Top righ clockwise: Kim, Zavjalova, Haandrikman and Hamilton.

Kim was 60 pins behind in second place with 1329 (221.50), with Zavjalova in third and Hamilton in fourth, both tied at 1320 (220.00). Zavjalova earned the No., 3 seed due to the higher last game, 247 to 233.

Kim's team mate Baek Seung-Ja closed out her series with 750 (258, 256, 236) to break the previous record (728 - Maki Nakano, Japan, in 2008) by 22 pins. Baek, who had 527 for the first three games finished in 8th place with 1277, 43 pins off the pace for the medals.

Hamilton posted one of two 267 high games in her fourth game. 77th place Holly Fleming, Scotland, rolled the other behind games of 137, 173, 184, 183 and 123 for 1067.

The girls will return on Tuesday for the Doubles event, while the Boys will take to the 36 lanes at Tali Bowl on Monday morning.
