East Coast, Nevada teens lead 14th Teen Masters after Qualifying Round One

Two East Coast and two Nevada teens look the lead in their respective divisions as the 14th annual Teen Masters got underway at the National Bowling Stadium Sunday.
Zack Hattori, 17, of Las Vegas averaged 218 for his first six games on a long oil conditioning pattern, finishing with a 1,310 pinfall total and an eight-pin leader over Adam Johnson, Oswego, Ill., in the High School boys’ division. The largest division in the Teen Masters included 128 players.
Thea Aspiras, 18, of Chesapeake, Va., bowled at a 213 pace for a 1,283 total and a 24-pin lead over Rachael Perrault, Clarksville, Tenn., who finished with a 1,259 total in the 56-player High School girls’ division.
Jeffrey Juarez, 14, East Meadow, N.Y., with a 1,230 total, jumped into a 61-pin lead over Greg Young of Viera, Fla., in the boys’ under 14 division. Young had 1,169 pins. There are 27 boys in the Under 14 category.
Chevelle Holstein, 14, Sparks, Nev., posted a 1,125 total to pace the Under 14 girls. Rebecca Gotterbarn of Garden City South, N.Y., was second among the 15 players in her division with 1,074 pins.
Qualifying in the Teen Masters continues Monday with a second six-game round on a short oil condition for all players. After 12 games, the top one-third of the male bowlers and top one-third of the female bowlers will advance to a third qualifying round to determine the top 32 High School and top 8 Under 14 players – regardless of gender – who will compete in the head-to-head single-elimination match play finals.
High School players will bowl seven-game matches; Under 14 players will bowl five-game matches.
In addition to competing for scholarship prizes, two top players from the Teen Masters will join two players selected from the Collegiate Masters in earning invitations to bowl alongside the best bowlers in the world in the 2010 PBA World Series of Bowling, Oct. 24-Nov. 6, at South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas.
