New Team All-Events leader at USBC Open Championships
05/11/11
With the live-stream cameras rolling and thousands of viewers tuned in to see John Kreyer Jr. of Fridley, Minn., and Steve Bohn of Norwood, Minn., try to defend their Regular Doubles title at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships, the members of K & K Bowling Services 5 of Las Vegas (pictured) quietly started striking on the lanes nearby and stole the show as they catapulted into the Team All-Events lead May 7.
The group rebounded from a mediocre team performance (3,163) and averaged 233.9 in Doubles and 240.7 in Singles to take the top spot with a 10,283 total at Reno's National Bowling Stadium. Linds Lakers 1 of Minneapolis previously held the lead with 10,076.
Adam Ishman led K & K Bowling Services 5 with a 2,135 all-events total and was followed by Junior Team USA member and first-time USBC Open Championships participant Kyle King (2,123), USBC Second Vice-President Andrew Cain (2,097), Chris Klerk (2,003) and Les Shirwindt (1,925). Ishman and King also moved into third place in Regular Doubles with 1,456.
Klerk, who rolled a 300 game during the team event last year, opened singles with 11 consecutive strikes and had a chance to become the 22nd bowler in tournament history to record multiple 300s on the tournament lanes (and third with two at the Stadium), but he knew the team had something much greater on the line.
"It's always an awesome opportunity to have that chance here," said Klerk, a former Junior Team USA member who left a 10 pin on his final shot to finish with 299. "It's the one tournament you always look forward. To be honest, I really wasn't focused on the 299 because I knew we had a crack at Team All-Events at that point. I really was just trying to get every pin that was out there. A 299 is great, but Team All-Events is so much cooler."
John Kreyer Jr. of Fridley, Minn., and Steve Bohn (left, r-l) of Norwood, Minn., turned in a solid, 1,368, doubles performance May 7, and although they won't repeat as champions, the experience was priceless for the left-handed duo.
"It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience," said Kreyer, who rolled an 816 series to lift the pair to the 2010 Regular Doubles title with a 1,514 total. "We knew we'd have more eyes on us due to the live streaming. It's unbelievable to have the recognition by everyone. We were treated so well, and we were pretty relaxed coming out today. There were the normal first-shot jitters, but we got right back to business."
The two were led by Kreyer's 211, 232 and 258 for a 704 total, while Bohn added 196, 233 and 235 for a 664 series. George Rowan and Rod Singer (right, l-r) of Columbus, Ohio, lead with 1,494.
Kreyer, who shot 299 on the way to a 742 series in team, added 708 in singles and moved into a tie for 10th place in Regular All-Events with 2,154. He finished fifth last year with 2,184. Matt Weggen of Muscatine, Iowa, leads Regular Singles with 826 and Regular All-Events this year with 2,268.
Bohn added 628 in team and 588 in singles for 1,880.
In 108 years of USBC Open Championships history, more than 27 million games have been bowled at the annual event. Only 723 of those games have been 300s, and just 21 bowlers have achieved the feat twice.
Mike Malinick of Garden Grove, Calif., Michael Cave, of Hopewell, Va., and Branden Baird of Phoenix added their names to the short list with perfect games at the National Bowling Stadium this week.
After a disappointing team event, Malinick (pictured left), a 54-year-old right-hander, started doubles with 21 consecutive strikes May 4 before a 10 pin ended his chance of joining 2003 Regular Singles champion Ron Bahr of Topeka, Kan., in the record books. Bahr rolled games of 237, 300 and 300 on the way to the title.
"I was pretty nervous," said Malinick, who finished doubles with games of 300, 267 and 196 for a 763 series. "You string that many strikes, and you're here at Nationals, plus just the entire history in Reno and bowling at the National Bowling Stadium, and it's an awesome feeling. You're nervous going into the seventh frame, and then you get into the ninth and think you've got a pretty good chance at it. I took a lot of deep breaths and hoped I didn't tug one or chicken wing one down there."
The 2011 event marked Malinick's eighth overall tournament appearance and sixth visit to the Stadium, where he added 662 in singles and 541 in team for a 1,966 all-events total, a career-best by more than 100 pins.
Cave (right), also a 54-year-old right-hander, rolled his 300 in his final game of team, and the effort was preceded by games of 182 and 214 for a 696 series. He added 559 in singles and 478 in doubles for a 1,733 all-events total.
Baird, a 37-year-old right-hander, also made his run at perfection during team and sandwiched the 24th perfect game of this year's event between games of 223 and 192 for a 715 series May 7. He finished his 12th Open Championships appearance with 612 in doubles and 606 in singles for 1,933.
"It's a great feeling of elation," said Baird, who made his 12th Open Championships appearance. "You work hard to just be competitive here at the tournament, and then to shoot 300 on top of that really puts you on top of the world."
Also this week, John Kreyer Jr. of Fridley, Minn., Mike Sealy of Mobile, Ala., and Chris Klerk of Chandler, Ariz., rolled 299 games, while Paul Gilmour of Pasco, Wash., shot 298.
Glen Brown of Renton, Wash., got off to a hot start in singles and maintained that momentum all the way to the Classified Singles lead at the USBC Open Championships on May 8.
The 40-year-old right-hander opened with a 10-strike 268 game and added 178 and 244 for a 690 series at the National Bowling Stadium. Robert Petersen of Crystal Lake, Ill., and Scott Blaisdell of Malad, Idaho, previously shared the lead with 680.
Brown finished his 2011 Open Championships campaign with 563 in team and 537 in doubles for a 1,790 all-events total, which is good for sixth place in Classified All-Events. Mark Bylander of Vergas, Minn., leads with 1,842.
The Classified Division is for bowlers with entering averages of 180 and below.
There will be one live streaming broadcast from the USBC Open Championships this week.
Tom Hess (right) of Urbandale, Iowa, the 2011 USBC Masters champion, will make one more appearance at the USBC Open Championships before his exempt status on the Lumber Liquidators Professional Bowlers Association Tour makes him ineligible to compete.
Hess' team event will be shown live on BOWL.com on May 11 at 11:30 p.m. EDT.
