PBA star Chris Barnes undergoes gall bladder surgery

Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, will be home for the holidays after undergoing gall bladder removal surgery Tuesday, according to a Facebook note posted by his wife, Lynda Barnes. The 14-time PBA Tour titlist had just returned home from the Qatar Open. Barnes had been experiencing abdominal pain recently, and an ultrasound performed upon his return identified gall stones, Lynda Barnes reported. He was released from the hospital Thursday morning.

Fresh off his victory in the Round1 Japan Cup, Mika Koivuniemi (pictured) of Finland defeated fellow countryman Tony Ranta in the title match of the 12th Qatar Bowling Open, 544-471, en route to win his second consecutive PBA International title and the 11th PBA title of his career Saturday at Qatar Bowling Center in Doha. The two-time PBA Player led Final Round 1 & 2 to capture the No. 1 seed for the playoffs. Koivuniemi pocketed 30.000 for the victory while Ranta received 14.400 Euro for second place.

PBA off to strong ratings start; new ESPN promotional spot debuts

The PBA Tour got its 2012-13 season off to a strong ratings start when Sunday's telecast of the Bayer Advanced Aspirin World Bowling Tour Finals presented by PBA posted a 14 percent increase in audience viewership over the first telecast of the 2011-12 season. Leading into the opening telecast of the new season, a new ESPN promotional campaign called "Love the Lanes" debuted in advance of Sunday's WBT Finals.

Steelers Linebacker LaMarr Woodley becomes fifth PBA League owner

20121109PBALeagueLaMarrWoodley_small.jpg All-Pro Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley (pictured) has become the fifth team owner in the new PBA League, the PBA announced today. Woodley joins Los Angeles Clippers star guard Chris Paul, former Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jerome Bettis, former NFL all-pro receiver Terrell Owens and actor/comedian Kevin Hart as owners in the PBA League which debuts as part of the PBA Detroit Winter Swing Jan. 19-27 at Thunderbowl Lanes in the Detroit suburb of Allen Park, Mich.

PBA returns to Milwaukee for multi-event Summer Swing in May 2013

Four tournaments to be conducted in three bowling centers

201213PBATourLogo_small.jpgAfter a five-year absence, the PBA will return to the Milwaukee area with a unique four-tournament, three bowling center Summer Swing in late May. The PBA Summer Swing will include two-day tournaments at AMF Waukesha just west of Milwaukee, AMF West in Milwaukee proper and AMF Bowlero in suburban Wauwatosa. Each of the three events will produce a five-player stepladder final which will be televised on a tape-delayed basis, and the qualifying rounds of the three preliminary events will serve as a foundation for a fourth championship tournament.

Malaysia's World Cup champ dreams of bowling on PBA Tour

2012BWCChampionSyafiqRidhwan_small.jpgAfter becoming the first Malaysian bowler to win the Qubica AMF World Cup, Syafiq Ridhwan (l.) professed his dream is to continue to improve and one day bowl on the PBA Tour. The 26-year-old Ridhwan, who defeated Team USA member Marshall Kent in the title match in Wroclaw, Poland, told New Straits Time reporter Ajitpal Singh, "I actually want to turn pro, but I am not sure when I can achieve it. It takes a lot of dedication but I believe, if I do turn pro, I can make it as I've beaten many top bowlers before."

PBA announces 2013 PBA50 Tour schedule

New stops, ESPN-televised finale part of new PBA50 Tour season

PBA50Logo_small.jpg A new name, new venues, a season-long points competition leading to an ESPN-televised finale and a crop of new star players will highlight the 2013 PBA50 Tour season, the Professional Bowlers Association announced today. The 2013 PBA50 Tour (formerly PBA Senior Tour) schedule will consist of 11 tournaments with new stops in Welch, Minn., Tampa, Fla. (tentative), and Trussville, Ala. The season-long point competition will qualify the top three players for the ESPN-televised PBA50 Tour Finals.

"First Lady of the PBA" Rainy Stitzlein dies in Akron

Eddie Elias' executive assistant, only woman in PBA Hall of Fame, dies at age 84

20121130PBARainyStitzlein_small.jpg Lorraine (Rainy) Stitzlein, arguably the most influential woman in PBA history, died on Friday, Nov. 30 in Akron, Ohio. She was 84. The only woman inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame was PBA founder Eddie Elias' executive assistant and business secretary in the organization's formation years. But she was much more than an office manager. If Elias was the father of the PBA, Stitzlein was the "mother, midwife, nurse, aunt, cousin and hostess," a sports writer once wrote.

In the title match at Round1 Stadium Diver City Tokyo Plaza Bowling Center, Koivuniemi flew past Yoshihiro Kaji (r.), Japan, 268-214, to earn the 6.000.000 Japanese Yen top prize, approx. 72,730 U.S. Dollar. Kaji received 3.200.000 Yen for second place.

Countdown is on: PBA's 2012-13 ESPN coverage begins on December 9

2012GeicoPBAWSOBIVLogo_small.jpgThe countdown to the start of the PBA's 2012-13 debut on ESPN has begun. The finals of the WTBA's Bayer Advanced Aspirin World Bowling Tour men's and women's finals, presented by the PBA, will be the first in a series of 16 telecasts extending through April 7. The two-hour combined men's and women's show will air on Sunday, Dec. 9, at 1 p.m. ET. The next five Sundays in a row will feature GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling IV finals, all 90-minute programs airing at 1 p.m. ET.

PBA RPI winners to bowl for Tournament of Champions berth on ESPN

PBA adds new incentives to end-of-season "regional major championship" tournaments

The new RPI program will introduce affordable, closer-to-home regional "major" championship events to the PBA's East, South, Central, Midwest, Southwest and West/Northwest combined regions.

PBA Midwest Region to test reduced entry fee tournaments

One-day tournament formats will help reduce travel expenses for competitors

201213PBATourLogo_small.jpgThe PBA Midwest Region will offer a limited schedule of reduced entry fee and condensed format tournaments in 2013, designed to help competitors manage their expenses. The Midwest Region will conduct four standard and four senior events that will reduce PBA member entry fees to $155 (a $65 reduction) and non-member entry fees to $225 (a $60 reduction). The reduced-entry fees will offer a modified 1:4 payoff ratio.

PBA players head to Round 1 Japan Cup to close calendar year 2012

A field of 20 invited PBA Tour players will join a field that includes more than 100 Japan and Korean PBA members for the renewal of the Round 1 Japan Cup in Tokyo Nov. 30-Dec. 2, the final tournament of the calendar year. After a two-year absence, the Japan Cup returns twice in the extended 2012-13 PBA Tour season. The second Round 1 Japan Cup of the expanded season is scheduled for Nov. 28-30, 2013. As of Jan. 1, 2014, all PBA competition returns to a calendar year schedule.

George Gohagan III wins record-setting PBA all regions title in Las Vegas

201213PBATourLogo_small.jpgAmateur George Gohagan III of Roswell, Ga., defeated former PBA Women's Series champion Shannon Pluhowsky of Kettering, Ohio, in a one-ball sudden death roll-off, 10-9, that concluded a record-setting PBA All Regions South Point Open at South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas on Saturday, Nov. 10. Gohagan, who earned $3,500, defeated England's Dominic Barrett, 300-298, in a nail-biting semifinal round match. Pluhowsky ousted Tom Daugherty of Wesley Chapel, Fla., 247-236, in the other semifinal match.

Hall of Famer fires big games to end a four-year winless streak; wins his 33rd career title and second PBA major

The 49-year-old lefthander defeated No. 1 seed, Jason Belmonte (right) of Australia, in the title match, 254-227, to win his 33rd career PBA title and the $50,000 top prize. It was the second career "major" for Bohn, who ranks sixth on the all-time PBA titles list trailing to Walter Ray Williams Jr. (47), Earl Anthony (43), Norm Duke (37), Pete Weber (36) and Mark Roth (34).

In the title match against three-time PBA champion Osku Palermaa of Finland, Daugherty doubled his low score to defeat the two-hander, 200-182.

Norton became the first left-handed title winner since Jason Couch won the Mark Roth Plastic Ball Championship in March, 2011 and ended the longest title drought for left-handed bowlers in 50 years of Professional Bowlers Association Tour competition.

Koivuniemi received $10,000 for second place. PBA Player of the Year Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill. earned $7,000 for third place and Mike Fagan of Dallas garnered $5,000 for fourth place.

The multiple World and PABCON Championships gold medalist, who charged out of 16th and last qualifying spot at the start of the six-game semifinal round to earn the fourth spot in the finals, defeated No. 1 seed Mike Wolfe of New Albany, Ind., in the title match, 243-192.
