Masters underway in Milwaukee By Dick Evans

Dick_Evans_5152.jpg The Masters tournament was launched in 1963 and the American Bowling Congress' leaders expected it to be dominated by nationally known players like Dick Weber and Don Carter who were key members of outstanding teams across the country. And the Masters lived up to expectations the first four years with future Hall of Famers Harry Smith winning the 1963 title in Buffalo, Billy Welu winning back-to-back Masters in 1964-65 in Oakland/St. Paul and Bob Strampe emerging victorious in Rochester. Then a strange thing happened.

Hero in Dolphins' unbeaten season once gave PBA Tour a shot By Dick Evans

ColumnistDickEvans_small.jpg Larry Seiple joined the Miami Dolphins as a seventh-round draft pick out of Kentucky in 1967, one year after the Dolphins began play in the Orange Bowl. Before his Dolphin career ended in 1978, he had played on two Super Bowl championship teams and was instrumental in the Dolphins' unbeaten season in 1972.  when he ran 37 yards from punt formation – a play that sparked the Dolphins to an AFL playoff victory over the Steelers. Every blue-blood Dolphin fan in America knows about Seiple's dramatic fake-punt run but few know that he once gave the Professional Bowlers Association tour a shot.

Do or die season for PBA By Dick Evans

Republished courtesy of Daytona Beach News-Journal - Daytona Beach, Fla. USA (Oct. 14, 2007)

Fred_Schreyer_5719.jpg The new Professional Bowlers Association is facing an old problem – money – in its make–or-break season that begins with an Oct. 21 ESPN telecast. The deal is this: the three Microsoft executives who bought the money crippled PBA in 2000 have run out of patience and money.
"Ownership is resolute in its unwillingness to continue funding losses," said Fred Schreyer (pictured), commissioner and CEO of the PBA, that has lost money for six straight seasons. That adds up to a staggering loss – an estimated 25 to 30 million American dollars.
