Lady Hawks earn number one ranking for the first time since the 2009 season

UMESLogo_small.jpgIt took 16 months, but the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Bowling Team has regained the number one ranking in the nation. The March poll of the National Tenpins Coaches Association (NTCA) featured a record breaking 21 members voting and eight of them cast the Lady Hawks as the first place team. Those eight votes, along with the other 13 voters gave UMES 566 total points and the top spot in the poll.

Reno Bighorns compete at USBC Open Championships

2010USBCOCRenoBighorns_small.jpgThe Reno Bighorns basketball team may be preparing for a pair of games this weekend, but head coach Jay Humphries and four of his players (pictured) were able to take some time away from the hardwood to compete at the USBC Open Championships on Thursday. The players have bowled at the National Bowling Stadium for team-building activities before, but never have experienced the pressure of USBC Open Championships competition.

USBC Hall of Famer Don Ellis reaches 60 years at Open Championships

2010USBCOCDonEllis_small.jpgWhen USBC Hall of Famer Don Ellis of Sugar Land, Texas, made his 60th appearance at the USBC Open Championships on Sunday, he was surrounded by friends, family and hundreds of fellow bowlers. Ellis, a member of the tournament's elite 100,000-Pin Club, became the 13th bowler to reach the 60-year plateau. The 81-year-old right-hander missed four tournaments shortly after his debut, but has been to every event since 1955. In 60 appearances, he has knocked down 107,452 pins and ranks sixth on the all-time pinfall list.

Two bowlers reach 50 years at USBC Open Championships

The 72-year-old right-hander decided to assemble a dream team of longevity to help him celebrate the milestone. Cummings shared the spotlight with former Open Championships tournament director Hal Kaminski (r.) of Hubertus, Wis., who also competed for the 50th time.

Field is set for 2010 USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships

USBCcollegiateLogo_small.jpgThe field for the 2010 United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Team Championships has been determined following sectional qualifying tournaments held this weekend. Sectional qualifiers were held March 13-14 at four sites – AMF Parkway Lanes in Allentown, Pa.; Holiday Bowl-Brainerd in Chattanooga, Tenn.; Landmark Lanes in Peoria, Ill.; and the South Point Hotel and Casino Bowling Center in Las Vegas. The ITC will be held April 14-17 at the El Paso (Texas) Convention and Performing Arts Center.

Illinois bowler adds to success in Reno, ties for lead at USBC Open Championships

2010USBCOCGeorgeKontos_small.jpgFor more than 30 years, Reno has been a special destination for George Kontos (pictured) of Joliet, Ill., and the 56-year-old right-hander celebrated his birthday with another memorable performance at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships. Kontos averaged 262 for his final four games at the National Bowling Stadium and moved into a tie for the lead in Regular All-Events with a 2,073 total on Friday. His 760 singles effort also helped him into second place in Regular Singles.

Illinois team soars into lead at USBC Open Championships

Idaho duo takes Classified Doubles lead

2010USBCOCBluebirdLanes_small.jpgRay Struck of Orland Park, Ill., and his teammates spend months each year preparing for the USBC Open Championships, and neither illness nor injury could keep them from finding success on the tournament lanes this week. Struck turned in the second-best performance of his 16-year USBC Open Championships career and helped Bluebird Lanes of Orland Park into the top spot in Regular Team and Team All-Events at the National Bowling Stadium.

Field set for Intercollegiate Singles Championships

USBCcollegiateLogo_small.jpgTwo-time Team USA member John Szczerbinski of Wichita State and women's regular season average leader Jenn Boisselle of Central Florida were among the players who qualified Friday for the 2010 United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Singles Championships. The USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships, which will be held May 17-18 at AMF Euless Lanes in Euless, Texas, features 32 of the top male and female collegiate bowlers in the country competing for national titles.

Shockers headline Peoria Sectional

Top four teams will advance to the 2010 USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships

200910WSUShockers_small.jpgAfter finishing their regular season last weekend, the WSU Shockers quickly found out that they will be traveling to Peoria, Ill. to compete in the Peoria Sectional, March 13-14. Both the men and women (pictured) will be competing in the same sectional which features 17 teams in the men's division and 18 in the women's. The top four teams from each will advance to the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships at the El Paso Convention and Performing Arts Center in El Paso, Texas on April 14-17.

North Dakota bowler rolls first 300 of 2010 USBC Open Championships

2010USBCOCBarryZimmerman_small.jpgBarry Zimmerman of Grand Forks, N.D., has been on the verge of perfection at the USBC Open Championships before, and when he got a second chance to add his name to the record books, he took full advantage and rolled the first 300 game of the 2010 event. The 49-year-old right-hander started singles with 12 consecutive strikes and added games of 230 and 236 for a 766 series at the National Bowling Stadium on Monday night, which also moved him into the top spot in Regular Singles. Larry Thompson Jr. of Spring, Texas previously held the lead with 742.

12 year old girl bowls two honor scores in two days

20100309AshleyDunn_small.jpgAshley N. Dunn, Palmdale, CA, is no stranger to having success on the lanes at an early age. She has been racking up accomplishments well ahead of her age group since she began bowling at 8 years old. Ashley has now turned 13, but was determined to accomplish as much as possible while she was still 12. On February 8th and 9th Ashley rolled two games of 11 in a row, a 748 and 760 series, a 290 and 298 game, which helped her to a book average of 201 and a league average in session of 205. Not bad for a 12 year old girl!

Iowa bowler continues success at USBC Open Championships

2010USBCOCMattSmithJasonHale_small.jpgMatt Smith (l.) of Altoona, Iowa, has performed consistently during his USBC Open Championships career, and he excelled again in 2010, taking the lead in Regular Doubles and Regular All-Events at the National Bowling Stadium on Sunday. The 34-year-old right-hander started his 2010 tournament campaign slowly with a 609 series in team, but averaged 244 during doubles and singles on the way to a 2,073 all-events total. Smith partnered with Jason Hale (r.) of Des Moines, Iowa, for a 1,411 doubles total.

The 37-year-old right-hander teamed up with Richard Voakes Jr. (left) of Oshkosh, Wis., to take the Regular Doubles lead with a 1,326 total Saturday, and the pair helped Super Bowl-Appleton of Kaukauna, Wis., into the top spot in Team All-Events with 9,165.

Former champions help Wisconsin team into lead at USBC Open Championships

Six years ago, Joseph Crocco Jr. and Mike Vasey of Racine, Wis., took home the Regular Doubles title at the USBC Open Championships, and now they hope to share that winning feeling with their teammates. The pair helped Central Saw and Mower into the Regular Team lead with a 3,081 effort at the National Bowling Stadium on Thursday and into the top spot in Team All-Events with a 9,017 total Friday.

Over 400 professionals from all over North Texas attended the 2010 DFW Tourism Council event to learn first-hand all of the new, exciting things being offered this spring and summer in Dallas/Fort Worth area.

UMES women's bowling team visit International Training Center

20100305UMESatITRC_small.jpgIn preparation for upcoming postseason events, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's bowling team paid a visit to the International Training and Research Center this week. The Hawks, the No. 2 ranked NCAA team nationally, trained with ITRC and Team USA head coach Rod Ross and assistant head coach Kim Terrell-Kearney (pictured left) at the International Bowling Campus. The team did a combination of classroom work and on-the-lanes training.

Six USBC bowlers still have a shot against the pros

2010PBAExperienceShowdownLogo_small.jpgAfter 15 days of online voting, six United States Bowling Congress league bowlers are closer to their chance of going on national television to compete against some of the top bowlers on the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour. Fans cast more than 140,000 votes to determine the six bowlers who advanced in the PBA Experience Showdown, a unique competition for USBC Sport Bowling members. The winner of the qualifier will square off against the five winners of the 2009-10 PBA Tour Versatility Swing.
