41st QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup

Lynda Barnes leads QubicaAMF World Cup as field was cut to top 24

Gladiator Bowling Center in Ljubljana, Slovenia

Team USA's Lynda Barnes led the women's QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup in Ljubljana, Slovenia, as the field was cut to the top 24 players. The wife of PBA superstar Chris Barnes who withdrew from the USBC Masters in Milwaukee on Wednesday due to a back injury, felled 5601 pins and averaged 233,38 over 24 games.

"The lanes were a little tighter in the back so they played a little different today," said Barnes, who hovered at or near the top during the week, never falling below third place in any round. She highlighted the women's competition with a 1531-series (255,17 average) yesterday to take the lead.

"I was really anxious today. I wanted to get out and bowl. I had to settle myself down and get refocused." Barnes did not bowl a game below 200 including a 248 and totaled 1317 pins today, the second-highest block of the day and an average of 219,50.

I heard the sad news from the USBC Masters but I couldn't talk to Chris directly since two days." Barnes said. "It motivates me even more that he has something positive to think about".

The reigning U.S. National Amateur champion is 176 pins ahead of second-place finisher Helen Johnsson of Sweden, who checked in at 5435 after rolling the high series of the fourth block with the 1414.

England's Fiona Banks leaped one spot into third with 5269 pinfall total. Malaysian international Wendy Chai slipped to fourth with 5211 behind a sub-par 1162-series.

Lorraine Casha of Malta (pictured) shot a 238-final game to take the 24th and final qualifying post with 4587 (191,13).

Those 24 will roll an additional eight games on Friday morning at 8 a.m. with the top 8 in total pinfall (32 games) advancing to the best-of-three match play finals. The No. 1 seed will bowl the No. 8 seed, the No. 2 faces No. 7, No. 3 meets No. 6 and No. 4 plays No. 5.

Though 8th placed Marieke de Jong from the Netherlands is already 618 pins behind, Lynda Barnes doesn't think the top seed has an advantage. "If it would be best-of-seven, I would say 'yes', but best-of-three is a sprint," said the mother of twins, Ryan and Troy.

"I just try to keep learning tomorrow," added Barnes, who wants to follow in the footsteps of TEAM USA team mate Shannon Pluhowsky. The lefty, who made the first cut in the USBC Masters on Wednesday, who won the World Cup in 2002 and 2004 (the picture shows Pluhowsky with the women's trophy after winning last year's World Cup in Singapore) and finished second in 2003.

"Shannon is a good friend and you always want to bring it back to your country", said Barnes. "I know that my husband, my kids and my team mates are with me."

The top 24 women take on the lanes at Gladiator Bowling Center in Ljubljana, Slovenia, Friday morning at 8 a.m.

Helen Johnsson nearly perfect; rolls 299 in QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup

Helen Johnsson flirted with perfection, firing eleven strikes in the early Thursday morning squad before a 10-pin ended her dreams to shoot the sixth perfect game by a woman in the QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup history. Johnsson started off with 213, 212 and 259, before she fired the 299. The three-time Swedish champion closed out the day with 237 and 194 for a 1414-series and an average of 235,67.

The Swedish international led the 33 players of Squad A after qualifying with 5435 pinfall total and an average of 226,46. She outaveraged her nearest competitor, Clair Johnston, by nearly 20 pins. The Aussie was second with 4965. Finn Piritta Kantola moved into third place with 4927 behind a 1273-score today.

Aida Granillo (pictured), a lawyer from El Salvador, who participates in her record 15th World Cup, is fourth with 4856. Iliana Lomelí of Mexico was fifth with 4850, with Ellen Ramos of the Philippines sixth, 4752, and Bigi Manico from Switzerland seventh, 4749. Rounding out the top 8 from Squad A is Beatrix Pesek of Hungary with 4736.

Squad B with overall leader Lynda Barnes of the United States will take on the lanes at 11.30 after which the 68-player field is trimmed to the top 24. Remaining athletes then will roll an additional eight games on Friday morning at 8 a.m. with the top 8 in total pinfall (32 games) advancing to the best-of-three match play finals.
