PBA announces Summer Series details

18 stars selected for team competition at Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Ill.

2008PBATeamShootout_small.jpg The Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) and Six Flags announced today details of the PBA Team Shootout Hosted by Six Flags Great America, the second consecutive summer the two have teamed up for a special event featuring some of the top stars of the Denny's PBA Tour. A total of 18 bowlers will compete in the made-for-TV team event which will air throughout the summer on ESPN.

PBA announces plans for 50th Anniversary Celebration

2008-09 season is the PBA Tour's 50th

PBA50thAnniversaryLogo_small.jpg The Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) announced today plans for a 50th Anniversary celebration as the upcoming 2008-09 Denny's PBA Tour will mark the 50th season in the organization's history. To kick off the celebration, the PBA will announce the "50 Greatest Players in PBA History." A committee will select 50 bowlers from an original list of 100 and will then rank them from 1-50. Announcements will be made throughout the summer detailing plans for the upcoming celebration.

Harvey and Kulick team to win 2008 Columbia 300 PBA Ladies and Legends

2008PBSAS02RobertHarveyKellyKulick_small.jpg It took Robert Harvey just two weeks to win his first Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour title, but it certainly didn’t come easy. Harvey converted one of the biggest spares of his life in the 10th frame Monday to seal the 233-225 victory for he and his partner Kelly Kulick in the 2008 Columbia 300 Ladies and Legends presented by MGD 64 at The Cherry Bowl.  Kulick and Harvey will split $15,000 for their victory while April Ellis and Dale Eagle share $8,000 for second place.

PBA Hall of Famer Tom Baker and 11-time Professional Women's Bowling Association (PWBA) champion Liz Johnson led their respective divisions in the 2008 Columbia 300 PBA Ladies and Legends presented by MGD 64 and will team up Tuesday for the round robin match play portion of the event.

The defending champions (pictured after their victory in 2007) led their respective divisions in qualifying Saturday and look primed to team up for a shot at defending their title in the Columbia 300 PBA Ladies and Legends presented by MGD 64 at The Cherry Bowl. The Ladies and Legends features the top female bowlers and the top male bowlers 50 and older.

PBA reveals 2007-08 season-ending awards

Chris Barnes took home Chris Schenkel PBA Player of the Year honors, Rhino Page was voted Harry Golden PBA Rookie of the Year and Riga Kalfas was named the Steve Nagy Sportsmanship Award recipient. Barnes (l.) won the PBA Player of the Year Award for the first time in his 10-year career. Page (r.) ran away with the PBA Rookie of the Year Award after putting together perhaps the greatest rookie season in PBA history.

Sharp wins PBA Senior Tour opener in Dayton

2008PBAS01KeithSharp_small.jpg A summer ago, Keith Sharp (right) came up just short in his quest to win his first Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour title the same week he lost his father. This time, dealing with his mother's recent illness, Sharp was able to come through with a victory, defeating Sam Zurich in the title match of the 2008 PBA Senior Dayton Classic at Capri Bowling Lanes in the first event of the season. In an exciting finish which saw both bowlers finish with a 210 in the title match, Sharp won a one-ball roll-off, 10-8, for his first victory.

Maccarone targets back-to-back titles in PBA Senior Dayton Classic

2007PBAS04SamMaccarone_small.jpg Sam Maccarone looks forward to the prospects of not only winning his second Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour title on Tuesday, but also the possibility of putting his daughter through college. The defending champion Maccarone averaged 226.13 on Monday to lead qualifying with a 3,637 16-game pinfall and earn the top seed for match play in the 2008 PBA Senior Dayton Classic at Capri Bowling Lanes. By finishing in the top eight, Maccarone earned a bye through the first two rounds of match play and will need to only win three matches to reach the title match where a special $50,000 bonus is on the line.

After winning his 37th career PBA Regional Tour on his favorite oil pattern, Traber got off to a hot start in search of his first career PBA Senior Tour title on that same pattern Sunday, taking the lead after day one of the PBA Senior Dayton Classic at Capri Bowling Lanes.

PBA Regional Players Championship on the horizon

DPBATourLogo118.jpg With the Regional Players Invitational (RPI) points list meaning more than ever this season, bowlers are encouraged to enter the Regional Players Championship (RPC) to earn valuable points toward a berth in the RPI and an exemption for the 2009-10 Denny's PBA Tour season. The 2008 RPC takes place May 23-26 at Stardust Bowl II in Merrillville, Ind., with a $10,000 top prize and a berth in the 2008-09 PBA Tournament of Champions on the line. The RPC will once again precede the Denny's PBA Tour Trials, which takes place May 7-June 1.

Tom Clark's move from USBC to PBA will be felt in many ways By Dick Evans

ColumnistDickEvans_small.jpg Not much media attention has been paid to the recent announcement that Tom Clark was moving from the United States Bowling Congress to the Professional Bowlers Association in mid-May. But may I say right here that it's a big deal for both organizations. Three years ago the USBC hired Tom away from USA Today where he wrote bowling and several other sports. If it were a baseball trade, it would have been labeled a great steal for the USBC.

PBA increases households, viewers on ESPN in 2007-08

PBA1958Logo_small.jpg Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour telecasts on ESPN during the 2007-08 season saw a five percent increase in average household audience and a four percent increase in total viewers from the 2006-07 season. The 21 telecasts on ESPN averaged 745,000 households, up from 710,000 in 2006-07 – a five percent increase – and was a seven percent increase over the 698,000 average household audience in 2005-06.

Big payday for Parker Bohn III, wins $150,000 in Motel 6 Roll to Riches

2008RtoRParkerBohn_small.jpg With his three kids looking on – completely unaware of the magnitude of what he was doing – Parker Bohn III secured his family’s future with six strikes on Sunday. Bohn defeated Norm Duke, six-strikes-to-five, in the final “Race to Six Strikes” to win the Professional Bowlers Association’s Motel 6 Roll to Riches special event, taking home the $150,000 winner-take-all top prize. The PBA Hall of Famer is fifth all-time with 31 Denny’s PBA Tour titles and ranks third with nearly $2.7 million in career earnings. But the $150,000 paycheck tripled any other top prize Bohn had secured in one day in his career.

PBA announces Regional Tour Award Winners

Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Pat Patterson Awards given for all seven regions

PBA1958Logo.jpg The Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) announced today the season-ending awards for the 2007-08 PBA Regional Tour season. Each of the seven PBA Regions awarded a Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Pat Patterson award. The awards for Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year are voted on by the seven Regional Managers and John Weber, Director of the Senior and Regional Tours. The Pat Patterson award was selected by the respective Regional Managers.

2007-08 PBA season ends with the fourth annual Motel 6 Roll to Riches

DPBATourLogo118.jpg A half dozen of the top bowlers on the Denny's PBA Tour will gather in Orlando, Fla., this week for the fourth annual Motel 6 Roll to Riches, a season-ending special event with a winner-take-all $150,000 top prize, the biggest pay off in professional bowling. The event will take place Tuesday, April 8 at 6 p.m. ET at Colonial Lanes and will air as two back-to-back one-hour shows on ESPN Sunday, April 13 at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. ET. This season's Major winners – Norm Duke, Michael Haugen Jr. and Sean Rash – will be joined by defending champion Doug Kent and Parker Bohn III and Chris Barnes.
