PBA announces new formats for its 50th Anniversary Season

Unique schedule and new formats will test the world's best players in 2008-09

PBA50thAnniversaryLogo_small.jpg For its 50th Anniversary season, the PBA Tour has announced a unique schedule of championship events on ESPN that will feature formats built to celebrate the game and test all facets of the world's greatest players. The schedule will be highlighted by the four distinct major championships, a made-for-TV celebrity doubles event, the return of the PBA Women's Series, a Mixed Doubles Championship and special Golden Anniversary Championship that will find senior pros battling on ESPN for the first time in seven years. The season will also crown champions on each of the PBA Tour's six challenging lane oil patterns.

2008 Denny's PBA Tour Trials

Seven bowlers round out the field of 58 exempt bowlers for the 2008-09 Denny's PBA Tour

Stardust Bowl II in Merrillville, Ind. (May 27-June 1, 2008)

2008PBATTTop7_small.jpg The thrill of victory and agony of defeat was evident as seven bowlers earned exemptions for the 2008-09 Denny's PBA Tour season while a pair of bowlers who were on Tour in 2007-08 came up just short. Dave D'Entremont, Chad Kloss, Criag Tuholski and Jason Lundquist faced little drama Sunday to wrap up exemptions, while Joe Bailey, Randy Weiss and Terrance Reeves all had to wait to find out their fate until the last game.

Kloss leads, D'Entremont moves up after Day Four in PBA Tour Trials

Stardust Bowl II in Merrillville, Ind. (May 27-June 1, 2008)

2007PBAChadKloss_small.jpg 2007PBADaveDEntremont_small.jpg Of all the bowlers in the 2008 Denny's PBA Tour Trials who could make a case for being the most deserving of an exemption, none can match the case of Dave D'Entremont (l.). Just two months after an unfortunate accident that cost him a chance at an exemption, D'Entremont is nine games away from redeeming himself. He used a 222.44 average over his nine games Saturday to move into third in the 2008 Lake County Indiana Denny's PBA Tour Trials at Stardust Bowl II. Chad Kloss (r.) led the field Saturday with an 8,124 36-game pinfall.

Tuholski continues to lead in 2008 Lake County Indiana Denny's PBA Tour Trials

2008PBATTCraigTuholski_small.jpg The excitement of leading the Denny's PBA Tour Trials nearly cost Craig Tuholski on Friday, but he got it together soon enough to maintain his lead heading into the final two days at Stardust Bowl II. Tuholski averaged 222.78 over his nine games on the Scorpion oil pattern to keep his spot atop the standings with a 6,149 27-game pinfall. Nearly 100 bowlers are competing in the event which features five days of competition, each on a different PBA oil pattern. The top seven bowlers after Sunday's final nine-game block will earn one-season exemptions for the 2008-09 Denny's PBA Tour.

Duke wins U.S. Open to complete Triple Crown and Grand Slam

Brunswick Zone Carolier in North Brunswick, NJ (March 23-30, 2008)

2007PBA21NormDuke2_small.jpg The Grand Slam, two Majors in a season, $100,000 and the one accomplishment that has eluded him in his illustrious career. With so much riding on the line, getting a mark in the 10th frame was never more difficult for Norm Duke.  Needing any spare to win the 65th Denny's U.S. Open, Duke left the 2-4-5-8. But facing the biggest spare attempt of his career, Duke converted to defeat Mika Koivuniemi, 224-216, to win his fourth career Major and 28th PBA Tour title.

As the top seed, Koivuniemi earned an automatic berth in the title match. The first match features 2006-07 PBA Player of the Year Doug Kent taking on last year's Player of the Year runner-up, Norm Duke. The winner of that match will face No. 2 Chris Loschetter.

Barnes and Williams both survive the first cut

2007PBAWalterRayWilliams_small.jpg 2007PBAChrisBarnes_small.jpg As late as Thursday evening, it was looking as if an exciting finish to the 2007-08 PBA Player of the Year race was going to end with a whimper instead of a bang. Instead, Chris Barnes (l.) and Walter Ray Williams Jr. (r.) made late runs to stay alive in the 65th Denny’s U.S. Open at Brunswick Zone Carolier. Meanwhile, Brad Angelo continued to the lead the field in hopes of capturing his first career title, finishing the first three days of qualifying with a 4,015 18-game pinfall.

The two-time USBC Intercollegiate Singles Champion felled 1,381 pins and averaged 230.17 for six games. Jones beat Weber to win with his 12th career title in GEICO Classic

2007PBA20TommyJones_small.jpg Although he was officially eliminated from the 2007-08 PBA Player of the Year race this week, Tommy Jones still showed he's one of the strongest forces on the Denny's PBA Tour and will be for years to come. Jones won his second title of the season and his 12th in the last four seasons, defeating PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber, 257-191, to win the 2008 GEICO Classic at AMF Babylon Lanes. Jones, who improved to 34-8 in his career on TV, took home $25,000 for the win while Weber (St. Ann, Mo.) earned $13,000 for second.

Weber earns No. 1 seed for the stepladder final of the GEICO Classic

AMF Babylon Lanes in West Babylon, NY (March 19-23, 2008)

2006PBA09PeteWeber2_small.jpg Pete Weber hasn't had his usual mojo on television this year. In fact, he's been so off-kilter he's even considered losing his signature sunglasses. Weber may mix it up Sunday, he may not. Regardless, he needs his magic for just one game to take home his 35th career Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour title. The PBA Hall of Famer defeated Tommy Delutz Jr., 247-212, in the position round Friday night to earn the top seed for Sunday's stepladder finals of the GEICO Classic at AMF Babylon Lanes.

Weber leads top 32 into round robin match play at GEICO Classic

AMF Babylon Lanes in West Babylon, NY (March 19-23, 2008)

2007PBA17PeteWeber_small.jpg Pete Weber hasn't had many breaks go his way this season, but he figures two solid weeks to close out the campaign will salvage what has been, by his standards, a slow season. Weber led Thursday's Round of 64 in the 2008 GEICO Classic at AMF Babylon Lanes with a 3,544 14-game pinfall, taking the top seed into Friday's round robin match play. All pinfall carries over into Friday's round robin, where bowlers earn 30 bonus pins for each win and 15 for each tie.
