Four-time Irish Champion Paul Magee dies

2003WTTCPaulMagee_small.jpg We were informed that long-time Irish national team member Paul Magee has died at the age of only 51 after a long battle with motor neuron disease. Paul was a member of the Irish national team from 1978 until 2001 and a four-time Irish national champion. He played in many World Cups, in World and European Championships before he became Irish team manager until 2003. "Paul was a man who lit up the world of bowling with his personality. His victory banquet sing-alongs were legendary," said Darryl Eagen, a friend and team mate on Team Ireland.

Four in a row for Lebon in Belgian Individual Championship

Goossens wins women's title

2008BELNCLebonGoosens_small.jpg Jean-Marc Lebon and Katrien Goossens won the men's and women's title in the 2008 Belgian Individual Championship Sunday May 4th at Bowling Bowlmaster in Brussels. It was the fourth consecutive national title for Lebon and the sixth overall. This season, the Belgian Sport Bowling Federation created a new category called "Top Sport" which was contested on sport conditions. The champions will represent Belgium at the 31st European Champions Cup, October 20-26, 2008 at Treff Bowling in Duisburg, Germany.

Caminsky beats Barnes to win 11th World Tenpin Masters

Trailing the American by nine pins after a 258-249 defeat in game #1, Caminsky put on a show in game #2 when he defeated the 10-time PBA champion, 277-259, to cruise to victory.

The South African, who has competed in the Masters on six previous occasions, had never advanced past the quarterfinals.However, he ended that record as he gained a 449-428 victory over James Tidd, England. The the last two matches of Round 1, Kirsten Penny became the fifth bowler from England to qualify for the quarterfinals as she defeated Indonesia's Ryan Lalisang 504-480. PBA Player of the Year Chris Barnes, the 2006 Masters Champion, elimnated Or Aviram, Israel, 449-405.

While Barrett has set up an all-English quarterfinal against Paul Moor, Williams will now meet Osku Palermaa (pictured left), who produced the best performance of the tournament so far in his opening round. In a match between two former World Cup champions, the Finn cruised to a 516-461 victory over Michael Schmidt, Canada.

2008MCCLogo_small.jpg Melvin Ocando, Spain, claimed his second gold medal after winning in All Events at the 11th Mediterranean Challenge Cup in Crete, Greece, when he defeated three opponents, all matches two-games-to-one, to win the men's Masters competition. In the title match against Maurizio Celli, Italy, Ocando won the decider, 203-163. On the women's side, Marie Gauton, France, the No. 5 seed, eliminated her team mate Elise Bretteville, both won gold in doubles, then ousted No. 1 seed Sue Abela, Malta, and topped Daniela Pialino, Italy, 2-0 in the title match.

France earned silver with 4771 while Cyprus secured the bronze medal with 4728. Sue Abela, Malta and Melvin Ocando, Spain won the titles in women's and men's All Events.

In the other matches on Friday, South African Guy Caminsky sidelined  Dutch Ghislaine van der Tol and England's Paul Moor defeated Alex Liew, Malaysia.

France and Italy win the gold medals in Doubles in Mediterranean Challenge Cup

2008MCCLogo_small.jpg Elise Bretteville and Marie Gauton won the second gold medal for France in the 11th Mediterranean Challenge Cup in Crete, Greece in women's Doubles. The duo totaled 2396 for six games to beat Raffaella Fusco and Daniela Pialino, Italy by 5 pins. Singles champion Sue Abela teamed with Tiziana Carannante to win the bronze with 2332. Men's Singles champion Sebastien Henry and Xavier Lotthe led the field of 9 countries after 5 games but fell to third due to a 318 game. Italians Marco Reviglio and Maurizio Celli took the gold with 2451. Silver went to Charis Panayiotou and Kostas Kyriakou, Cyprus, with 2408.

Abela, Henry start Mediterranean Challenge Cup with victory in Singles

2008MCCLogo_small.jpg Sue Abela from Malta won her fifth gold medal in Singles at the 11th Mediterranean Challenge Cup in Crete, Greece with 1276 six-game total and an average of 212.67. Defending champion Natassa Rovithaki, Greece fell nine pins short to take silver with 1267. Bronze went to Daniela Pialino, Italy, with 1194. On the men's side, Sebastien Henry, France had high games of 276 and 247 to beat out Greek youngster Evangelos Krizinis for the gold medal by 12 pins, 1319-1307. Mithat Siveliol, Turkey, finished with 253 and 234 to secure bronze with 1282.

Ljung (r.), who won the title in Paris and finished second yesterday in Istanbul, the 6th of 18 events, overtook fellow countryman Martin Larsen, 267-234 points. Penny (l.) finished fourth in the women's rankings in Istanbul to move up two spots with 246 points.

In his semi-final match against Ljung's compatriot Dennis Eklund, both Sweden, Lintilä almost rolled the seventh perfecto of the tournament when he flew past the No. 1 seed, 298-225. In the other semi-final, Ljung ousted Stuart Williams, England, 268-226.

Helén Johnsson wins first Super Six title in Sweden

Johnsson received 40 000 SEK for accomplishing the feat (app. $6,700). "It was nice to win since I have reached the semi-finals twice before. It also give me a strong inspiration for the upcoming Women's European Championships", said the reigning European Masters Champion.
