High School bowlers encourage peers to participate

Survey finds school team members active in other leagues, plan to stick with sport

USBCHighSchoolLogo.jpg As high school programs gear up for the new season, a recent survey by the United States Bowling Congress found bowling on a high school team is a positive experience that many high school bowlers would recommend to other students. Last fall, bowlers in the USBC High School Team Membership program were invited to complete an online survey regarding their bowling experiences.

High School Bowling continues rapid growth

Sport was the fastest-growing in 2007-08

USBCHighSchoolLogo.jpg Bowling was the largest-growing high school sport in the 2007-08 school year, continuing a decade-long trend, according to the most recent National Federation of State High School Associations participation survey. More than 52,000 students competed at the 4,656 schools offering high school bowling competition in 2007-08, representing a 16 percent increase from the 45,064 bowlers who participated during the 2006-07 school year. Lacrosse saw the second-largest increase in 2007-08 at 14 percent.

Cortese sisters, Hamilton among High School All-Americans

Crowe Star of Tomorrow Brittni Hamilton of Webster, N.Y., among the five girls chosen to the 2007-08 Dexter/United States Bowling Congress High School All-American Team. Hamilton is the lone repeater from 2006-07. The only boy previously on the squad is Gregory Pizl II (right) of Antigo, Wis., who made the inaugural team in 2005-06.

Cortese, Moyer win Denny's All-American High School Championships

2008DAAHSCCorteseMoyer_small.jpg Natalie Cortese of Hoffman Estates, Ill., and Travis Moyer of Anchorage, Alaska, overcame the pressure of competing in front of ESPN television cameras Sunday to win national titles in the Denny's All-American High School Championships. Moyer and Cortese each earned $3,000 scholarships by defeating their opponents at Brunswick Zone Carolier after the conclusion of the 65th Denny's U.S. Open telecast. The high school championships are scheduled to air on ESPN on Sunday, April 6 at 1 p.m. Eastern.

Four bowlers make TV finals at Denny's All-American High School Championships

2008DAAHSCFinalists_small.jpg Four varsity high school bowlers, Travis Moyer of Anchorage, Alaska, Kevin Tatrow of BelAire, Kan., Samantha Santoro of Reinholds, Pa., and Natalie Cortese of Hoffman Estates, Ill., advanced past a tough field Saturday and will have the chance to compete for thousands of dollars in scholarships on national television in the finals of the 2008 Denny's All-American High School Championships.  The event, which will be taped Sunday after the conclusion of the U.S. Open, is scheduled to be aired on Sunday, April 6 on ESPN at 1 p.m. Eastern.

Denny's, PBA, USBC announce top male, female varsity bowlers to compete in second Denny's All-American High School Championships

2007AAHSCLogo.jpg Thirty-two elite high school student-athletes have graduated to the next level through their selection to compete in the second Denny's All-American High School Championships in March. The Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) and the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) made their final selections based on bowling accomplishments, academics and other criteria.

New Mexico high school bowlers compete for state titles on grand stage

USBCLogoRed_small.jpg Already one of the fastest-growing high school sports, bowling reached another milestone when 22 teams from across New Mexico converged on the Albuquerque Convention Center for the New Mexico Activities Association State High School Bowling Championships on Wednesday. The event, which began with a traditional march down Center Aisle, marked the first time a high school state championship has been decided on the USBC Open Championships lanes and only the second time a high school bowling tournament has been contested in the USBC Open Championships venue.

South Carolina Independent High Schools go Varsity

Private school group brings total of states with letter recognition for bowling to 20

USBCHighSchoolLogo.jpg The South Carolina Independent Schools Association has selected bowling as its newest varsity sport effective with the 2007-08 season. The move by the private school group means the state is the 20th in the nation with some kind of varsity bowling recognition. Bowling was the No. 1 choice in a recent survey of member schools on new sports to consider. The SCISA has 103 members, 75 of which sponsor athletic programs.

High School bowling participation numbers up again

Decade's fastest-growing sport up 6 percent in 2006-07 to pass ice hockey

USBCHighSchoolLogo.jpg Bowling, the fastest-growing high school sport this decade, continued its upward climb in 2006-07 and moved past ice hockey according to the newest National Federation of State High School Associations participation survey. The 19 states offering high school varsity bowling combined for 45,064 participants, 6 percent higher than the 2005-06 total of 42,482. Ice hockey had 43,305 participants. Since the 2000-01 season, bowling participation has more than doubled and the number of schools participating has nearly tripled.

Bator and Novak prevail at North Pointe Insurance $100,000 High School Open Singles Championships

Each winner awarded $15,000 Scholarships

Christine Bator, Warren, Mich. and Richard Novak III, Burnsville, Minn. survived a hectic two days to prevail over all other bowlers in their respective male and female divisions to become the champions of the second-annual North Pointe Insurance $100,000 High School Open Singles (Bowling) Championship (NPI $100,000 HSOSC) held at Indian Lanes in Wyandotte, Mich., according the Bowling Proprietors' Association of America (BPAA). Bator and Novak each won $15,000 in scholarship awards.

Bowlers selected for bowling experience, academic achievements, community involvement

USBCHighSchoolLogo.jpg Five boys and five girls exhibiting outstanding bowling and academic accomplishments while also demonstrating exceptional community involvement have been selected to the 2006-07 Dexter/United States Bowling Congress High School All-American Team. These select individuals each will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship and All-American Team awards.

Bowling ball donations benefit high school athletes

USBC, Ebonite team up to help programs in 11 states

USBCHighSchoolLogo.jpg The United States Bowling Congress and Ebonite International joined forces to make sure funding-challenged high school programs in 11 states received much needed bowling balls. USBC coordinated the distribution of more than 1,600 bowling balls donated by Ebonite to high schools in Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Virginia and Wisconsin.

Champions crowned at Denny's All-American High School Championships

2007AAHSCChampions_small.jpg With bright lights, ESPN television cameras and the pressure of bowling for thousands of dollars in scholarships, two players emerged as champions Sunday of the inaugural Denny's All-American High School Championships. Ellen Morrison and Jonathan Buckert of Rochester, N.Y., each earned $3,000 scholarships by defeating their opponents at DeVos Place.

Denny's All-American High School Bowling Championships nominations expanded, application deadline extended

Sponsors open up nomination, move deadline to Jan. 15, 2007

USBCHighSchoolLogo.jpg With excitement and interest building around the recently announced Denny's All-American High School Championships, event sponsors have decided to broaden the nomination process and extend the deadline for participants. The two-day tournament will be held March 24-25, 2007 to coincide with the Denny's PBA World Championship in Grand Rapids, Mich.
