Barnes clinches second USBC Queens title

Super Bowl Lanes in Canton, Mich. and Skore Lanes in Taylor, Mich. (April 26-30, 2008)

2008USBCQLyndaBarneschampion_small.jpg Her husband may be one of the best bowlers in the world, but Lynda Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, proved she's not so bad herself Wednesday as she won the 2008 United States Bowling Congress Queens. Barnes, whose husband is PBA Player of the Year Chris Barnes, delivered three perfect strikes in the final frame en route to defeating Amy Stolz of Castle Rock, Colo., 215-195 at Skore Lanes to win the biggest and most prestigious title in women's bowling. Barnes took home $30,000 for first place in addition to the Queens tiara, pendant and crystal trophy.

2008USBCQLyndaBarnes_small.jpg Lynda Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, earned the top seed Tuesday for the live televised finals of the 2008 United States Bowling Congress Queens. Barnes, who won the 1998 Queens, went undefeated in match play, winning six consecutive three-game matches at Super Bowl Lanes. Joining Barnes in the stepladder finals are second seed Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., third seed Amy Stolz of Castle Rock, Colo., fourth seed Joy Esterson of Annapolis, Md., and fifth seed Carol Gianotti of Australia.

Johnson rallies, leads undefeated players at USBC Queens

2008USBCQLizJohnson_small.jpg After watching her opponent get dialed in and throw 11 consecutive strikes, it would have been easy for Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., to let a little doubt seep into her mind at the 2008 United States Bowling Congress Queens. Instead Johnson dug deep, got lined up and started throwing strike after strike to defeat Australian Carol Gianotti to lead a group of 16 undefeated players in three-game, double-elimination match play in the Queens at Super Bowl Lanes. Down 290-258 in the opening game, Johnson rallied to defeat Gianotti, 747-680, to keep her hopes alive for her first Queens title.

Pluhowsky top qualifier at USBC Queens

Super Bowl Lanes in Canton, Mich. and Skore Lanes in Taylor, Mich. (April 26-30, 2008)

2008USBCQShannonPluhowsky_small.jpg Team USA's Shannon Pluhowsky of Phoenix took high qualifier honors for the 2008 United States Bowling Congress Queens on Monday with a 3,323 15-game total. She will lead 63 other bowlers into match play starting at 1 p.m. at Super Bowl Lanes. Pluhowsky also turned in the first 300 game of the 2008 USBC Queens tournament, and the 16th perfect game in the tournament's 47-year history. Kim Terrell of Dover, Del., the 2002 Queens champion, finished qualifying in second followed by Missy Bellinder of Fullerton, Calif., in third, Shannon O'Keefe of Brookfield, Wis., in fourth and Michelle Feldman of Mattydale, N.Y., in fifth.

Rejuvenated Bellinder takes lead at USBC Queens

2008USBCQMissyBellinder_small.jpg Team USA's Missy Bellinder of Fullterton, Calif., decided the best way to prepare for the 2008 United States Bowling Congress Queens was with a little relaxation and rejuvenation. So Bellinder put away her bowling balls in favor of suntan lotion and headed to the Mexican Riviera on a cruise for a quick vacation. Now, she's sitting atop the leader board at the Queens after the second Round of qualifying Sunday at Super Bowl Lanes. Bellinder fired 1,094 for five games during Round 2 and leads with a 10-game total of 2,206

The decision paid off as the left-handed Pluhowsky, the 2006 Queens champion, tied with Jennifer Murphy (r.) of Clarksville, Tenn., for the overall lead after the first round of qualifying with 1,132 for five games, an average of better than 226 per game at Super Bowl Lanes.

Kulick ready for tough task of defending USBC Queens title

2007USWOKellyKulick_small.jpg Even without a professional women's bowling tour, defending United States Bowling Congress Queens champion Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J., says the fields are getting stronger each year in the few major women's events that remain. Kulick will take on a tough field of more than 300 of the best women bowlers in the world when she attempts to defend her Queens title starting April 26 at Super Bowl Lanes in the Detroit suburb of Canton, Mich. The finals of the event will be televised live from Skore Lanes in Taylor, Mich., by ESPN2 on April 30 at 7 p.m. Eastern.

Kulick claims USBC Queens Title

All of her frustration, hard work and patience paid off Wednesday as she won the 2007 United States Bowling Congress Queens. Kulick of Union, N.J., who a year ago made history by becoming the first woman to earn a full-time exemption on the Denny's Professional Bowlers Association Tour, defeated Diandra Asbaty of Chicago 192-143 at AMF Carolina Lanes to win the biggest and most prestigious title in women's bowling.

Asbaty earns top seed for TV finals at USBC Queens

2007USBCQDiandraAsbaty_small.jpg Two-time U.S. Amateur champion Diandra Asbaty of Chicago earned the top seed for the television finals of the 2007 United States Bowling Congress Queens on Tuesday. Asbaty, a nine-time Team USA member and USBC Youth spokesperson, went undefeated in match play, winning six consecutive three-game matches against a field of the best women bowlers in the world. Joining Asbaty in the final five are second seed Kristal Scott, third seed Kelly Kulick, fourth seed Shannon O'Keefe, and fifth seed Wendy Macpherson.

She reaped the rewards of that hard work Monday at the 2007 United States Bowling Congress Queens. Kulick, who a year ago became the first woman to earn an exemption on the Denny's Professional Bowlers Association Tour, led a group of 16 undefeated players in three-game, double-elimination match play in the Queens at AMF Carolina Lanes.
