Postma becomes first three-time USBC Senior Queens Champion

2008USBCSQSandyPostmaChampion_small.jpg Sandy Postma of Lansing, Ill., swept all three games against challenger Marliss Tapp of Portage, Mich., to become the first three-time United States Bowling Congress Senior Queens champion at Skore Lanes on Wednesday. Postma, the 2004 and 2006 Senior Queens champion, defeated Tapp, 604-556, to win the $3,000 first prize while completing the tournament without a loss in the three-game, double-elimination match play finals.

2008USBCSQMarlissTapp_small.jpg 2008USBCSQSandyPostma_small.jpg Sandy Postma (l.) of Lansing, Ill., is in position to become the first three-time USBC Senior Queens champion after sweeping through the three-game, double-elimination match play finals at Skore Lanes on Tuesday without a loss. Postma, the 2004 and 2006 Senior Queens champion, defeated Joan Reilly of Wilmington, N.C., to earn a berth in Wednesday's title contest against Marliss Tapp (r.) of Portage, Mich. Because Postma won her first five matches, Tapp will have to beat her in two three-game matches in order to win the title.

Powers, 56, rolled a 249 in the final game of her three-game match to overcome a 51-pin deficit and hand Sandelin (right) her second loss in the double-elimination match play finals, 589-571.

Powers holds onto top spot at Senior Queens

2008USBCSQSharonPowers_small.jpg Monday morning's final qualifying round in the United States Bowling Congress Senior Queens was less than stunning, but Sharon Powers held onto the No. 1 qualifying spot heading into the match play portion of the event. "I bowled like ka-ka today," Powers said. "It was over- and under-reaction all morning for me, and I was trying too hard." Finishing the 15-game qualifying portion of the event with 3,022 pins - 39 pins ahead of Linda Carter of Rockford, Ill. - netted Powers a $225 bonus as high qualifier.

2008USBCSQSharonPowers_small.jpg It only took Sharon Powers two frames to realize her game plan for the second round of the 2008 United States Bowling Congress Senior Queens had gone astray. "I told myself coming into today's round to stay clean and then I had opens in my first two frames," the 51-year-old Lakewood, Colo., resident said. "But then I relaxed and bowled well." Well enough to race into the 10-game qualifying lead at Skore Lanes here Sunday.

California's Ditch rolls into first-round lead at USBC Senior Queens

2008USBCSQJanineDitch_small.jpg Janine Ditch almost pulled out of the 2008 United States Bowling Congress Senior Queens before it started, but despite feeling miserable, she coughed and sniffled her way into the tournament lead. The 56-year-old from Chino Hills, Calif., was the only player among the 139 women ages 50 and older to complete the first five games without a single game under 200 for a 1,113 total. After Sunday's second round, the top 50 senior women will advance to a third five-game qualifying round Monday morning. The top 31 will then join defending champion Lucy Sandelin of Tampa, Fla., in the three-game, double-elimination match play finals.

2007USBCSQLucySandelin_small.jpg For United States Bowling Congress Hall of Famer Lucy Sandelin, it would be pretty difficult for life to get much better than it is as she prepares to defend her 2007 USBC Senior Queens title April 26-30 at Skore Lanes in Taylor, Mich. As Sandelin packed clothes and bowling equipment for her trek from her Tampa, Fla., home to suburban Detroit, where she'll face a field of roughly 150 women ages 50 and older in the Senior Queens, she recalled a much darker outlook on life.

Lucy Sandelin wins USBC Senior Queens

In a showdown between USBC Hall of Famers, the once-beaten Sandelin overwhelmed previously undefeated Virginia Norton of Cypress, Calif., 680-563 and 645-546, to win the double-elimination title contest.

Hall of Famers to battle for USBC Senior Queens title

She'll get that chance Wednesday when she bowls fellow USBC Hall of Famer Lucy Sandelin for the title in the United States Bowling Congress Senior Queens at Northcross Lanes. Norton, who owns nine national professional titles and six USBC Women's Championships title, emerged from the three-game, double-elimination match play finals Tuesday as the last undefeated player in the record field of 161 women ages 50 and older.

Postma, the only woman to win the USBC Queens (1995) and Senior Queens (2004 and 2006), defeated a pair of USBC Hall of Famers to remain undefeated after two rounds.

Goodling retains lead at USBC Senior Queens

2007USBCSQLindaGoodling_small.jpg Linda Goodling of Willow Street, Pa., held onto the second-round lead in USBC Senior Queens qualifying at Northcross Lanes on Sunday. Goodling finished with a 10-game total of 2,030, six ahead of USBC Hall of Famer Lucy Sandelin of Tampa.  The top 50 of 160 women after 10 games advanced to a third five-game qualifying round Monday morning.

2007USBCSQLindaGoodling_small.jpg Linda Goodling, a 59-year-old pro shop operator from suburban Lancaster, Pa., used a little luck and a little anger to roll into the first-round qualifying lead in the United States Bowling Congress Senior Queens at Northcross Lanes here Saturday. Goodling fired games of 274, 177, 194, 168 and 244 for 1,057 total, the highest five-game opening round since the Senior Queens shifted to that format in 2005.
