D.J. Archer wins first PBA title in Regional Players Championship

Stardust Bowl II in Merrillville, Ind. (May 26-29, 2006)

2006RPCDJArcher.jpg D.J. Archer has been through a lot in the last two years, but the wait for his first career Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) title was well worth it.

Archer defeated top-seed Jim Tomek Jr., 230-206, to win the 2006 PBA Regional Players Championship, the first of two Majors on the 2006-07 PBA Regional Tour schedule. The Grand Prairie, Texas resident, who took home $11,000 for the win, also earned a berth in next season’s Dexter Tournament of Champions, one of four Majors on the Denny’s PBA Tour schedule.

“It’s kind of a big weight off my back. People say once you get the first one a lot more will start happening,” said Archer, 25. “I fought through a bad two years. I had a wrist injury this year for about five weeks. I got it taken care of recently, so hopefully if I get out of Tour Trials I’ll be in better shape next year.”

Archer has been exempt on the Denny’s PBA Tour the last two seasons, but he finished 54th in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings and did not earn an exemption for 2006-07. He’ll have a chance to regain that exemption in this week’s Denny’s PBA Tour Trials, which begins Wednesday in nearby Hammond, Ind.

In the title match, Tomek trailed early but a double late in the match pulled him closer to Archer, who suffered four consecutive spares in frames 6-9. After a spare in the 9th frame, Tomek could have struck out in the 10th to beat Archer, but he left a 10-pin. Archer then struck with his first ball in the 10th for the win.

Monday started with 64 bowlers competing in best-of-three-games match play. Archer swept his first match against Vince Wood before winning each of his next three matches against Alex Cavagnaro, Paul Nicholas and David Traber by scores of 2-1. He then took care of Eddie Graham in the one-game semifinal match, 229-223.

Tomek, who was looking for his sixth career PBA Regional Tour title, advanced to the title match with a 183-161 win over Paul Gibson. Tomek will also compete in this week's Tour Trials.

The Denny’s PBA Tour Trials takes place Wednesday, May 31 through Sunday, June 4 at Stardust Bowl I in Hammond, Ind., and will feature more than 130 bowlers competing for 10 exemptions for the 2006-07 Denny’s PBA Tour season.

Tomek leads top 64 into RPC single-elimination finals

Jim_Tomek_4343.jpg Jim Tomek Jr. is doing everything he can to not look ahead to next week's Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour Trials. So far, he's doing a good job of focusing on the task at hand, finishing qualifying as the overall leader Sunday with a 3,529 16-game pinfall in the 2006 PBA Regional Players Championship at Stardust Bowl II.

Tomek, Camp Hill, Pa., had a successful season bowling the Qualifying Rounds on the Denny's PBA Tour, qualifying for six standard events, which tied for the Tour lead. He finished just fourth in points among non-exempt PBA members, however, missing out on an exemption for 2006-07. He'll try again for the exemption in next week's Denny's PBA Tour Trials.

"I look at every tournament individually and this was the next one on the calendar," said Tomek, who owns five career PBA Regional Tour titles. "I just wanted to come here and do the best I can. When this is over then I'll look at Tour Trials and I'll have the same thought process for that."

Tomek was ninth after the first day of qualifying, but started Sunday with a 300 game, the only perfect game of the tournament thus far. He averaged 214.26 over the final seven games to take the lead and earn the top seed for match play.

Saturday's leader, James Wallace, Hicksville, N.Y., finished second with 3,509, while Chad Kloss, Greenfield, Wis., is third with 3,482.

Dino Castillo.jpg Dino Castillo, Carrollton, Texas, who was exempt on the Denny's PBA Tour in 2005-06 but did not regain his exemption for next season, finished fourth with 3,459. Castillo was 63rd after Saturday's eight games, but he averaged 229.00 on Sunday, including a 277 in game 13.

The top 64 advanced to single elimination, best-of-three-games match play on Monday. The final four will bowl one-game matches Monday afternoon to determine the winner.

The RPC is the first of two Majors on the 2006-07 PBA Regional Tour schedule. The winner will earn $11,000 and a spot in the 2007 Dexter Tournament of Champions, one of four Majors on the Denny's PBA Tour.

James Wallace leads after Day 1 in 2006 PBA Regional Players Championship

James Wallace fired a 1,837 eight-game pinfall Saturday to take the lead after the first day of qualifying in the 2006 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Regional Players Championship (RPC) at Stardust Bowl II.

Wallace, Hicksville, N.Y., a PBA member since 1996, is bowling in his first career RPC. He owns five career PBA Regional Tour titles, his last coming in 2005.

"I had a game plan from practice yesterday and I stuck with it. I made things as simple as possible and just tried to adjust my ball speed," said Wallace, 39. "I like the challenging patterns more than the easy patterns. That allows me to play my "A" game and relax a little."

Wallace competed in last season's 2006 Denny's World Championship and 63rd U.S. Open – two of the four Majors on the Denny's PBA Tour – as a non-exempt PBA member. He finished 26th in the World Championship and 34th in the U.S. Open, the latter of which features the most difficult oil pattern of the season.

After averaging 227.80 over the first five games Saturday, Wallace used a 259 in game six to surge closer to Todd Book, who lead the first of two squads. Wallace finished with a 247 in game seven and a 192 in game eight to finish five pins ahead of Book.

Book, Cantonment, Fla., who became a PBA member just over a month ago, finished second with 1,832. Jason Craigen, Mesa, Ariz., is third with 1,786.

Five-time Denny's PBA Tour titlist Eric Forkel, Las Vegas, is fifth with 1,742 while PBA Hall of Famer Ernie Schlegel, Vancouver, Wash., is 11th with 1,722.

All 255 bowlers will return Sunday for another eight games of qualifying after which the top 64 will advance to single elimination, best-of-three-games match play on Monday. The final four will bowl one-game matches Monday afternoon to determine the winner.

The RPC is the first of two Majors on the 2006-07 PBA Regional Tour schedule. The winner will take home $11,000 and a spot in the 2007 Dexter Tournament of Champions, one of four Majors on the Denny's PBA Tour.

2006 Regional Players Championship around the Corner

The 2006 Regional Players Championship is just around the corner. The first of two Majors on the 2006-07 PBA Regional Tour schedule takes place May 26-29 at Stardust Bowl II in Merrillville, Ind., just one day and 20 miles apart from the start of the 2006 Denny's PBA Tour Trials in Hammond, Ind.

At stake in this year's event is a spot in the 2007 Dexter Tournament of Champions, as well as a projected $10,000 first-place prize. David Beres won last year's event which nearly propelled him to an exemption for 2006-07 through the Midwest Region as more points are awarded in the RPC than in standard Regional Tour events.

The PBA Regional Players Championship was created in 2002 to give regional players an opportunity to bowl for more money than at standard Regional Tour events. The tournament is open to any PBA member who is not exempt for the 2006-2007 Denny's PBA Tour season.

The entry fee for the 2006 Regional Players Championship is $275 and should be mailed to PBA Central Region Manager Gary Zwiezinski. Please use the regular PBA entry form for this event. For on-line entries, please visit the PBA Central Region on-line registration section.
