Over the past several years, former Professional Bowlers Association star Wayne Webb of Sacramento, Calif., has nearly disappeared into obscurity, but he returned to the spotlight with the recent DVD release of "A League of Ordinary Gentlemen," a documentary about life on the PBA Tour.

Webb, who stars in the film along with fellow pros Chris Barnes, Pete Weber and Walter Ray Williams Jr., was in Corpus Christi, Texas, this week for the 2006 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships.

Two weeks ago, Webb came up just short of returning to the Tour full-time when he finished 16th at the PBA Tour Trials in Hammond, Ind. More than 130 competitors bowled 45 games over five days and the top 10 finishers were awarded exemptions for the 2006-07 season.

"I am a competitor and I'm always trying to win, so after just missing at the Tour Trials, I felt like I didn't want to bowl anymore," said Webb, who was the PBA Player of the Year in 1980, the same year he won the Firestone Tournament of Champions. "Bowling on the Tour is all about the individual, but the Open Championships is a team tournament. I couldn't let the other four guys down and not show up, so I made the trip and gave it my best effort."

The 48-year-old right-hander posted 639 in doubles, 632 in singles and 611 in team for a 1,882 all-events total at the American Bank Center Exhibit Hall.

"I thought I bowled a lot better than my scores," said Webb, who made his 12th Open Championships appearance. "I knew the lanes were going to be tough, but I still expected to be able to get lined up and throw strikes. I was hitting the pocket often, but I just didn't have the right angle to get good carry."

With his bowling career likely coming to an end, Webb has learned that it takes more than simply throwing strikes to be successful.

"To be one of the best, you need love for the game and a competitive fire," said Webb, who won 20 PBA titles in his 30-year hall of fame career. "Because I've been working as a bowler for so long I've lost that fire. I still have the love, but I'm perfectly happy running my pro shop and staying at home. I'll always be in the bowling industry, but I don't want to compete to earn a living."
