When Larry Sifton of Lafayette, La., won the Classified Doubles title at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships in 1999, he figured it would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience and savored every minute of it.

At the American Bank Center Exhibit Hall on Saturday, the 66-year-old right-hander almost found his way back to the top of the leaderboard, this time with a different partner.

Sifton teamed up with Carlton McCoy of Opelousas, La., and moved into fourth place in Classified Doubles with a 1,223 total. McCoy led the way with 631, while Sifton contributed 592. Robert Tukker, Mount Prospect, Ill., and David Clauss of Chicago lead with 1,248.

"I guess I just pick good partners," said Sifton, who teamed up with Thomas Scott of Lafayette, La., to take the crown in 1999. "I was really proud to be paired up with someone who bowled well enough to get us into the top 10 today, but I am disappointed that I couldn't match his performance and help us into the lead so he could experience what it's like to be a champion."

This was only the third trip to the Open Championships for McCoy, who joined Sifton's team after Scott decided not to compete any more, but it was the first time the two had the opportunity to bowl doubles together.

"We bowled doubles together at the state tournament last week and felt like we made a pretty good pair," McCoy said. "And since we didn't bowl as well as we would've liked, we figured we'd bowl together again this week and try to improve."

For Sifton, who made his 11th trip to the Open Championships, this was the first time in a long time that he has been at his best on the lanes. Much of the last four years has been spent in and out of a cast after having surgery on his Achilles tendon.

Sifton added 556 in team and 546 in singles for a 1,694 all-events total, while McCoy had 556 in singles and 489 in team for 1,676 all-events.

"I'm glad I am finally healthy and that we bowled well, but basically we just come to the tournament each year for the vacation and the adventures we find in the different cities," Sifton said. "We all enjoy bowling together and when we go to the tournament we like to do everything together. It's all part of the experience."
