Florida team flirts with history at USBC Open Championships
American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas (Feb. 11 - July 3, 2006)
Flirtin' With Disaster of Tallahassee, Fla., nearly made history at the 2006 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships as it tried to become the first team to win back-to-back Classified Team titles. After opening with 885 and 1,027 at the American Bank Center Exhibit Hall on Monday, the group was in position to make a run at the top spot, currently held by Torkelson Construction of Clarion, Iowa, which leads with 2,878. Flirtin' With Disaster fell short though, finishing with 865 for a 2,777 team total and fifth place overall.
"Last year, we were very relaxed and just having fun," said Gary Whitmer, who made his 15th Open Championships appearance. "But this time it was a little different. I think that seeing those eagles up on the scoreboard adds some pressure to perform. We didn't feel that weight was off our shoulders until the first game was over."
This year, the group featured four of the five team members who claimed the 2005 Classified Team title with 2,957, the second highest series posted in that division. Lewis Marine Supply of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., which shot 2,974 at the 1991 in Toledo, Ohio, owns the top spot in that category.
Robert DuCasse led the way for Flirtin' With Disaster with 606 and was followed by Karen West (557), Whitmer (550), newcomer Henry Bryant Jr. (547) and Ken Mackenzie (517).
Alan Thompson, of Tallahassee, Fla., was the missing member from last year's championship squad and could not join the group to in its title defense because his improved average would have put the team over the 900 combined average mark and into the Regular Division.
"I bowled in a Sport league, which went a long way to helping improve my scores," said Thompson, who contributed 653 in last year's championship performance. "I really wanted to be out there to keep the team together, but I still felt like I was doing my part by cheering them on from the stands."
According to Whitmer, finding repeat success on the tournament lanes takes more than just the right mix of skill and luck.
"Because we all bowl together back home, we have good team chemistry and communication," said Whitmer, a 45-year-old right-hander. "We're happy with the result, but we really didn't bowl as well as we could have. I know it would've been great to win this again, but it's still been an unforgettable experience, and I'm ecstatic to think we might finish in the top five."
