Kansas woman sets record at USBC Open Championships
American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas (Feb. 11 - July 3, 2006)
Kristal Scott of Wichita, Kan., couldn't have picked a better time for her first career 800 series, as she made history Thursday by becoming the first woman to achieve the feat at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships. The 25-year-old right-hander posted games of 269, 268 and 279 for an 816 series at the American Bank Center Exhibit Hall to lead One Lucky Guy of Wichita, Kan., to a 3,269 team total. Scott's total topped the previous high series by a woman of 789, set earlier this year in singles by Janette Piesczynski of Cheektowaga, N.Y.
"This was such a great experience, but I'm almost speechless and still a little shocked," said Scott, who had 656 in singles and 597 in doubles for a 2,069 all-events total. "Because I was bowling in the leadoff spot, my mind wasn't just on my own score. I was still trying to get a good read on the condition to keep everyone else lined up. So really, my team helped me shoot 800 in a big way."
It was just the second Open Championships appearance for Scott, a three-time collegiate All-American at Wichita State University, who also had success as a member of USBC Team USA (2001 and 2002) and Junior Team USA (1999, 2000 and 2003).
Although she has remained in Wichita as an associate coach for the Shockers' bowling program, this trip also was a reunion of sorts for Scott, who returned to the lanes with her friends and former Wichita State teammates.
The opportunity made for a very long day, though, as Scott bowled doubles and singles at 7 a.m. and then returned for team at 2:30 p.m. She was forced into the awkward schedule because her doubles partner, George Lambert IV, a member of Team Canada since 2000, left late Thursday for Melbourne, Australia, where he will compete in the Commonwealth Tenpin Bowling Championship, which begins Monday.
"I was so concerned with the lanes and staying on top of the transition that I never really felt the pressure of trying to shoot 800," Scott said. "We already saw the breakdown when we bowled in the morning, so I knew it was coming. I had to watch for someone's ball to go high and then I'd know to make a move."
Scott's big set in team helped One Lucky Guy move into 41st place in Regular Team. Lambert added 656 and was followed closely by Anita Manns, a two-time All-American and the Most Valuable Player for the 2004-05 collegiate bowling season, who had 642. Clara Guerrero, a member of Team Colombia and a two-time All-American contributed 578, while Team Canada member Samantha Wong rounded out the effort with 577.
"Because we have such a history bowling together as a group, we always feel like we can work together on the lanes even after we've spent some time apart," Scott said. "Even though we're not all in the same city anymore, we still know each other's games very well. It helps to be comfortable with the people you're bowling with."
Scott attributed her success to the challenging conditions she has seen over the years in college, internationally and in USBC Sport Bowling leagues. This past season, she finished behind former professional standout Jan Schmidt and Guerrero on the Sport bowling national average list and was followed closely by Manns.
Schmidt topped the list with 213.77, followed by Guerrero (206.84), Scott (202.43) and Manns (201.04). Because Schmidt and Guerrero did not have the 48 games required to be recognized as the national high average, they will not be eligible for the official national high average award.
"Everything about Sport Bowling is different from a standard league condition," Scott said. "It's more difficult to read the lanes and make adjustments, so Sport bowlers are forced to make better shots in order to score. That's the sort of preparation that really pays off at a tournament like the Open Championships."
