Texas pair races into Top 10 at USBC Open Championships
American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas (Feb. 11 - July 3, 2006)
By the time Stephen Kubis of Houston finally made it to the lanes at the American Bank Center Exhibit Hall on Saturday, he was almost seven hours into a unlucky day and never imagined he'd find his way into the top 10 at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships. Kubis and his doubles partner Stacey Smith left Houston at 6:15 a.m. and figured they had plenty of time to complete the three and a half hour trip before their 11:40 a.m. doubles and singles squad. Instead, they got caught in traffic that resulted from construction and a wreck on the highway, and Kubis got a speeding ticket while trying to make up some time.
Once they hit the lanes though, their luck changed and they combined to shoot 1,212 to move into a tie for sixth place in Classified Doubles. Kubis led the way with 618, while Smith contributed 594. Robert Tukker of Mount Prospect, Ill., and David Clauss of Chicago lead with 1,248.
"After the drive here, we really didn't think luck was on our side," said Kubis, who made his ninth Open Championships appearance and added 649 in singles and 512 in team to move into 10th place in Classified All-Events with 1,779. "But I figured that our luck had to change eventually and we'd finally get some breaks. I also wanted to make sure I shot something decent so they wouldn't be laughing at me at work on Monday like they did after I bowled team."
Kubis had almost two weeks to stew over his team score because he and Smith bowled on June 18 in place of a canceled team and headed back to Houston to wait for their next chance on the tournament lanes.
"After what I shot in team, I didn't think I really had a chance at anything," Kubis said. "I hit the pocket in team, but I didn't carry. On the ride home, I told Stacey I would have to figure something out, and I did. Today I moved further inside, and the pins fell my way."
