Frilingos and Banks emerge as Masters Champions in III Commonwealth Tenpin Championships

Altona OZTenpin Bowl in Melbourne, Australia (July 2-9, 2006)

 George Frilingos of Australia and Fiona Banks of England won the prestigious Masters titles to end the 3rd Commonwealth Tenpin Championships at Altona OZTenpin Bowl in Melbourne, Australia.

Both players led the 12-player men's and women's divisions after round robin to earn the No. 1 seed for the three-player stepladder finals. Both championship matches over two games total pinfall were decided in the final frame. Click on the image to enlarge it.

Frilingos watched Mohd Noer Said, Malaysia, defeating Jon Zadel, England, in the men's semi-final, 233-186. Said used the momentum and took a 33-pin lead after game #1 (211-178) but 2005 Australian ranking leader Frilingos rebounded with a 208-165 in game #2 to win the men's Masters title by mere two pins, 378-376.

On the women's side, Commonwealth Championships Singles champion Ann-Maree Putney, Australia, fell to Canadian Jennifer Willis-Park in the semi-final, 213-210. Willis, who won the gold medal in the team event, had a slim 3-pin advantage after the first game against Banks, 202-199. The English, who won two gold medals in women's and mixed Doubles, countered with a 233-222 win in game #2 to claim her third gold medal of the championships with a 432-424 victory.

Frilingos and Banks target gold medals in Masters in Commonwealth Championships

Frilingos, the 2005 Australian ranking leader, averaged 235,17 in the first block of round robin on the short oil pattern and won five matches to lead the 12-player field with 1461 pinfall total. Trailing the Aussie by 104 pins is Mohd Noer Said, Malaysia, with 1357. Third place belonged to Ray Falzon Reale, Malta, despite a 2-4 record with 1311.

Fiona Banks, who won gold in women's Doubles (on short oil) and gold in mixed doubles (on long oil) outaveraged her nearest competitor by more than 15 pins to take a huge 113 pin lead. Banks felled 1353 pins and won all her six matches for 1413 pinfall total. Jennifer Willis-Park, Canada, is second with 1300, while Wendy Chai, Malaysia, is another 73 pins behind Willis in third place with 1227.
