2006-07 PBA Tour #7

Second championship round, second victory, Rash wins Beltway Classic

AMF Country Club Lanes in Baltimore, MD (Dec. 6-10, 2006)

2006PBA07SeanRash.jpg In less than a year, Sean Rash has gone from a struggling qualifier with a lot of potential to one of the top young bowlers on the Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour.

Rash, who late last season became the first non-exempt bowler to win a Tour title, defeated PBA Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III, 279-225, to win the 2006 Beltway Classic at AMF Country Club Lanes for his second career title.

The 24-year-old combined for 18 strikes in his final 19 frames over his semifinal and final matches, dominating the 30-time titlist Bohn in the title match.

Rash got a break in the semifinal against Danny Wiseman, falling behind after Wiseman struck in the first five frames while Rash couldn't carry and started with four consecutive nine-spares. Wiseman missed a 10-pin in the sixth frame, however, and Rash responded with seven consecutive strikes to advance to the title match, 256-236.

"My first couple shots were pretty good in the first game. After I threw a bad shot in the fourth frame I told myself to regroup, get one break and see what happens. I just believed in what I was doing and took advantage of the opportunity I got," said Rash (Wichita, Kan.).

"I bowled two great bowlers. Parker's a Hall of Famer and Danny will be someday. When you're bowling those two guys you can't think about bowling them, you have to bowl the lanes. You can't control what they do."

In last February's West Virginia Championship, Rash advanced to the field of 64 through the Denny's PBA Tour Qualifying Round, then became the first qualifier to win a title, earning an exemption for the 2006-07 season.

On Sunday, Rash struck in the first six frames of the title match, opening up a nearly insurmountable lead as Bohn struck in just two of the first six frames. A strike in the 9th frame wrapped up the win for Rash.

Bohn advanced to the title match with a 222-206 win over Chris Loschetter. After a 7-10 split and open in the fifth frame, Bohn had a turkey to take over the lead. Loschetter had a chance to take back the lead with a strike in the 9th, but the 10-pin stood up. Bohn struck with his first ball in the 10th to advance to the title match.

Rash earned $25,000 and an exemption for the 2007-08 season. Bohn (Jackson, N.J.) took home $13,000 for second, Loschetter (Avon, Ohio) earned $6,500 for third and Wiseman (Baltimore) earned $5,500 for fourth.

The Denny's PBA Tour moves to West Babylon, N.Y. for the 2006 Columbia 300 Classic, Dec. 13-17, at AMF Babylon Lanes. The nationally televised ESPN finals take place Sunday, Dec. 17, at 1 p.m. EST.

Wiseman to bowl for the title in front of hometown crowd

2006DannyWiseman.jpg Competing at home was just the boost Danny Wiseman needed. The 11-time Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour titlist advanced to the finals of the 2006 Beltway Classic in front of a hometown crowd at AMF Country Club Lanes.

The Baltimore native advanced after taking all seven games to defeat Norm Duke in the best-of-seven Round of 8 to make his first TV finals since the 2004-05 Denny's PBA Tour season. Prior to that, Wiseman defeated both Chris Barnes (Flower Mound, Texas) and Brad Angelo (Lockport, N.Y.), by identical scores of 4-2.

"I've had some really bad luck the last couple of weeks," said Wiseman, who is looking for his first title since the 2004 Masters. "With all the things that have been going on the last couple of weeks and last year, there was added pressure. I knew that if I was going to do it, I better do it here."

Wiseman, who won his first career title in Baltimore in 1990, is making his third TV appearance in his hometown.

2006SeanRash_small.jpg Wiseman will face Sean Rash (Wichita, Kan.), who is seeking his second Denny's PBA Tour title in only his second TV appearance. Rash won his first career title in the 2006 West Virginia Championship in Parkersburg, W. Va.

The second semifinal will feature Chris Loschetter (Avon, Ohio) taking on Parker Bohn III (Jackson, N.J.). Loschetter began the day as the No. 32 seed in the Round of 32, but five games later he knocked off top-seeded Mike Scroggins (Amarillo, Texas) in the best-of-seven match.

2006ChrisLoschetter_small.jpg Loschetter (Avon, Ohio) had a tougher time in the Round of 16, going all seven games with Riga Kalfas (Florence, Ky.) before cruising with a 4-0 sweep of Patrick Healey Jr. (Flower Mound, Texas) in the Round of 8 to advance to Sunday's finals.

Parker Bohn.jpg Loschetter will have no easy task getting to the title match as he will have to get by PBA Hall of Famer and 30-time PBA titlist Bohn. Bohn, left, defeated fellow Hall of Famer Pete Weber (St. Ann, Mo.), 4-1, to advance to his third ESPN telecast of the season.

The four bowlers advance to Sunday's live ESPN televised finals at 1 p.m. EST at AMF Country Club Lanes. The winner will take home $25,000 and a one-season Denny's PBA Tour exemption.

Scroggins is the No. 1 seed entering single-elimination match play

2006MikeScroggins.jpg If recent history holds form, Mike Scroggins could very well be on track for his fourth career Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour title in the 2006 Beltway Classic at AMF Country Club Lanes.

Scroggins (Amarillo, Texas), who led the Round of 64 with a 14-game pinfall of 3,495, only has to look at the last two standard Denny's PBA Tour events featuring single-elimination match play to see that the No. 1 seed entering match play has gone on to win the title.

"Being number one out here definitely gives you a little edge because you know you beat everyone the day before," said Scroggins. "You would think you would bowl well the next day and have the advantage, but it doesn't mean a whole lot. Everything starts over and you just try to beat your opponent."

Mike DeVaney.jpg Scroggins held off a hard-charging Mike DeVaney (left; Temecula, Calif.) for the top spot heading into Friday's Round of 32. DeVaney fired off a 277 and 269 in his final two games to finish with 3,472.

2006ChrisBarnes_small.jpg Chris Barnes (right; Flower Mound, Texas) finished seven pins behind DeVaney with a 3,465, while local favorites Danny Wiseman (Baltimore, Md.) and Tim Criss (Bel Air, Md.) finished 13th and 17th, respectively.

The top 32 bowlers return at 9 a.m. EST on Friday for the Round of 32. The Round of 16 will begin at 2 p.m. followed by the Round of 8 at 7 p.m.

The top four bowlers will advance to Sunday's live ESPN televised finals at 1 p.m. EST at AMF Country Club Lanes. The winner will take home $25,000 and a one-season Denny's PBA Tour exemption.

Scroggins leads Beltway Classic after first qualifying block

2006MikeScroggins.jpg The leaderboard changed throughout the day Thursday in the Round of 64 in the 2006 Beltway Classic at AMF Country Club Lanes. When the smoke cleared, Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour exempt bowler Mike Scroggins was in the lead after seven games with a total pinfall of 1,766.

It was a first round that gave every bowler a chance to move up the standings, as evidenced by the top-10 finishers being separated by only 60 pins. Scroggins posted his low game of 233 in game five before finishing with a 258 in games six and seven.

"I'm actually surprised I led," said Scroggins (Amarillo, Texas). "I bowled consistently all day. It's a matter of who carries the best and evidently I carried the most in the seven games. I didn't see what the scores were the last game. I shot 258 in my last two games, but I thought I was just keeping pace. I didnt think I'd be leading."

2006EBT15SeanRash_small.jpg Just four pins behind Scroggins with a 1,762 was Sean Rash (Wichita, Kan.) who came close to taking the overall lead with a 279 in his seventh game.

PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber (St. Ann, Mo.) sits in the third position with 1,758, bowling a 290 in game six.

2006TimCriss_small.jpg Five perfect games were bowled in the first round including Tim Criss (Bel Air, Md.) who bowled back-to-back 300s in games five and six. Joe Ciccone and roommates Chris Barnes (Flower Mound, Texas) and Mike Wolfe (New Albany, Ind.) each bowled perfect games as well.

All 64 bowlers return at 6 p.m. EST for another seven games. The top 32 from today's rounds advance to Friday's match play.

The top four bowlers will advance to Sunday's live ESPN televised finals at 1 p.m. EST at AMF Country Club Lanes. The winner will take home $25,000 and a one-season Denny's PBA Tour exemption.

Houtz wins PBA Tour Qualifying Round with a plastic ball

Michael Houtz admitted some people gave him a hard time about using a Columbia Blue Dot ball during Wednesday's Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour Qualifying Round, but he got the last laugh.

Houtz used the classic plastic ball – which is in production on a limited basis – to lead the Denny's PBA Tour Qualifying Round with a 1,744 seven-game pinfall to advance to the Round of 64 in the 2006 Beltway Classic at AMF Country Club Lanes.

A PBA member since 2005, Houtz (Myerstown, Pa.) fired a 258 in his final game, finishing just one pin ahead of William Barlow (Edgewood, Md.), who shot 256 his final game and finished second with 1,743.

"I use (the Blue Dot) all the time on three of the PBA Regional Tour patterns, and on the Cheetah pattern I usually use a (Columbia) Shadow or a Blue Dot. I don't like dealing with the over-under reaction you get on with a reactive ball," said Houtz, who averaged 249.14 on the high-scoring Cheetah oil pattern Wednesday.

"There are a few people who give me a hard time about it, but you have to do what you have to do out there. I was surprised that it carried as well as it did. I'm going to try it again tomorrow and if the lanes play the same I'll use it."

Jason Lundquist (Honesdale, Pa.) finished third with 1,696 while D.J. Archer (Mineral Wells, Texas) was fourth with 1,675. Archer was exempt on the Denny's PBA Tour the last two seasons before missing the cut for the 2006-07 season.

Rounding out the qualifiers for Thursday were Jonathan Van Hees (Providence, R.I.), Justin Warhol (Sound Beach, N.Y.) and Greg Thompson Jr. (Dayton, Ohio). Additionally, Mark Decman (Canada) advanced as the high amateur in the field, finishing tied for sixth overall.

This week, seven PBA members advanced to the Round of 64 as no Commissioner's Exemption was awarded and exempt bowlers Paul Fleming and Amleto Monacelli withdrew.

Thursday's Round of 64 features two seven-game qualifying blocks, the first of which gets underway at 11 a.m. EST. The top 32 will advance to single elimination match play on Friday. The final four advance to Sunday's live ESPN televised finals at 1 p.m. EST. The winner will take home $25,000 and an exemption for the 2007-08 Denny's PBA Tour season.
