2006-07 PBA Tour #15

Allen wins ninth career title in another all-lefty affair

Thunderbowl in Council Bluffs, IA (Feb. 14-18, 2007)

2006PBA15PatrickAllen.jpg Though the debate over who is the best left-handed bowler on the Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour will never end, Patrick Allen can lay stake to that claim for at least one week.

In a final round featuring the top three lefties currently on Tour, Allen captured his ninth career Denny's PBA Tour title and second this season with a 218-169 win over Parker Bohn III Sunday to win the 2007 Go RVing Classic at Thunderbowl.

Allen took advantage of some uncharacteristic mistakes by the 30-time titlist and PBA Hall of Famer Bohn, who missed a 7-pin conversion in the fifth frame and left a 6-8 split and opened in the 8th frame to give the top-seeded Allen the breaks he needed.

As the top seed, Allen exacted some revenge in stepladder finals. The previous three times a top seed had won in the stepladder format, Allen was the victim in the title match including this season's 2007 Dick Weber Open where he fell to Jason Couch in the title match.

"Parker bowled a good game even tough he shot 170. He only missed the pocket twice, but that open in the 8th frame was the real momentum-swinger," Allen said. "Fortunately for me, I made a good ball change on the right lane and a marginal shot in the 9th carried and that was the difference."

The fourth-seeded Bohn flagged the 7-pin in the fifth while Allen was working on a double. Allen threw his third consecutive strike in the sixth, but then made a crucial mistake of his own, leaving the 4-6-8-10 split and opening in the 7th. Bohn responded with a double but then left the 6-8 and opened, allowing Allen to clinch the match with a strike in the 9th frame.

Bohn averaged 249 in winning the first three matches to advance to the title match. He defeated second-seeded Jason Couch, who was looking for his third title of the season, 245-193, in the semifinal. Bohn also defeated third-seeded Riga Kalfas, 235-205, who was making his first career TV appearance, and fifth-seeded Mike Edwards, 267-191.

Allen (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) took home $25,000 for the win while Bohn (Jackson, N.J.) earned $13,000 for second. Couch (Clermont, Fla.) took home $6,500 for third, Kalfas (Florence, Ky.) earned $5,500 for fourth while Edwards (Tulsa, Okla.) earned $5,000 for fifth.

The Denny's PBA Tour heads to Parkersburg, W. Va., next week for the 2007 Bayer Classic at Emerson Lanes, Feb. 21-25. The live ESPN televised finals take place Sunday, Feb. 25, at 12:30 p.m. EST.

Allen shoots 290 game to the earn top seed in Go RVing Classic finals

2005BWAABotYPatrickAllen.jpg After it was all said and done in Friday's Round of 16 in the 2007 Go RVing Classic at Thunderbowl, Patrick Allen stood atop the field and captured the No. 1 seed for the Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour event's final.

In a reversal of roles, Allen will look to take a little revenge on his challenger in Sunday's stepladder finals. Over the last three seasons, a No. 1 seed has won a title only three times in the stepladder format, each time at the expense of Allen.

2006JasonCouch_small.jpg Allen (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) first lost to Danny Wiseman in the finals of the 2004 Masters, followed up by a one-pin loss to Chris Barnes in the 62nd U.S. Open. Those two losses were capped by a 258-236 loss to Sunday's No. 2 seed Jason Couch (Clermont, Fla.) in the finals of the 2007 Dick Weber Open.

"One-seeds haven't fared too well the last couple of years and the only ones who have won have beat me, so maybe I can return the favor," said Allen, who is looking for his ninth career title after winning the 2007 H&R Block Classic on Jan. 7. "I guess it's a good thing to be top seed, but it could turn out not to be a good thing. I have to come out and throw 10 good frames and not worry about the built up anticipation."

Allen entered the final nine-game block in fifth, slowly climbing his way to top before knocking off Couch, 290-255, in his final match to claim the top seed.

Parker Bohn.jpg 2006MikeEdwards_small.jpg Sunday's first match will feature No. 4 Parker Bohn III (l., Jackson, N.J.) vs. No. 5 Mike Edwards (Tulsa, Okla.). Edwards, the sole right-hander in the finals, advanced to his third TV finals, his most since making four appearances in 1991. Edwards entered Friday night's position round at No. 7 before jumping Nathan Bohr (Wichita, Kan.) and Mike DeVaney (Temecula, Calif.) with a 255 in his final game.

2006RigasKalfas_small.jpg Awaiting the winner of Bohn and Edwards will be No. 3 seed Riga Kalfas (Florence, Ky.), who is making his first career TV appearance. Kalfas, whose highest career finish is eighth in the 2006 Lake County Indiana Classic, secured his exemption on the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour by finishing first in the 2005-06 PBA Central Region Point Rankings.

Couch, who is undoubtedly the Tour's hottest bowler in the second half with four TV appearances and back-to-back titles in January, finished first in the qualifying for the second consecutive year in Council Bluffs before slipping to the second spot in Friday's round robin match play.

The five bowlers advance to Sunday's live ESPN televised finals at 11:30 a.m. CST at Thunderbowl. The winner will take home $25,000 and a one-season Denny's PBA Tour exemption.

Couch refuses to fall in Go RVing Classic

2006PBA12JasonCouch.jpg Jason Couch continued to lead the 2007 Go RVing Classic Friday, while a lesser known lefty is making a run toward his first career TV appearance.

Couch (Clermont, Fla.), who has already won two titles this season and is looking to take control of the 2006-07 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Player of the Year race, went 5-4 in round robin match play to maintain the lead he has held throughout this week’s event.

2006RigasKalfas_small.jpg Riga Kalfas, meanwhile, compiled a 7-2 record to solidify his hold on second place. The Florence, Ky., resident is looking to make his first championship round appearance in 56 career Denny’s PBA Tour events. He’s come close this season, posting two top-10 finishes.

Kalfas earned his exemption for this season by finishing first in the 2005-06 PBA Central Region point rankings. He’s looking to become the first bowler to win a title after earning an exemption through the PBA Regional Tour. Last week, John May – who earned his exemption through the PBA South Region – fell short in his bid, falling to Chris Barnes in the title match of the 2007 GEICO Classic.

2006DannyWiseman_small.jpg Danny Wiseman
(Baltimore) went 6-3 to move up from ninth to third, while PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber (St. Ann, Mo.) went 7-2 to move up from 14th to fourth. Mike Edwards (Tulsa) was another one of the big movers Friday, also going 7-2 to go from 24th to sixth.

In the position round, Michael Haugen Jr. (Cave Creek, Ariz.), who was 18th going into the final match, defeated Chad Kloss, 232-228, to move into the top 16. Rick Steelsmith (Wichita, Kan.), who was on the cut line in 16th heading into the position round, defeated fellow Wichita resident Sean Rash, 228-201, to finish 13th and send Rash home.

Defending champion Mike Machuga (Erie, Pa.) went 6-3 and sits 12th, while last week’s GEICO Classic champion Barnes (Double Oak, Texas) went 5-4 and is 10th.

2006KellyKulick_small.jpg Kelly Kulick (Union, N.J.), the first woman to earn a full-season Denny’s PBA Tour exemption, did not make the final 16, but her 22nd-place finish was the best of her career.

The top 16 advance to tonight’s final nine-game block of round robin match play at 6 p.m. CST. The top five will advance to Sunday’s live ESPN televised finals at 11:30 a.m. CST. The winner will take home $25,000 and an exemption for the 2007-08 Denny’s PBA Tour season.

Couch continues hot hand and leads in Go RVing Classic

2006JasonCouch.jpg With only six events remaining on the 2006-07 Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour, Jason Couch continues to make a case for himself as the Tour's top bowler.

The 37-year old, who won back-to-back titles in January, will take the No. 1 seed into match play in the 2007 Go RVing Classic at Thunderbowl, finishing Thursday's Round of 64 with a 3,441, 14-game pinfall.

"Last time we bowled on the chameleon oil pattern was in Reno, so I'm using the exact same equipment as I did there," said Couch, who finished third in the 2007 H&R Block Classic in Reno. "It's just a matter of figuring out the lanes and matching up. I thought the lanes were a little tighter in the second block so I used a more aggressive ball."

Couch (Clermont, Fla.) can lay claim to the "King of Council Bluffs Qualifying" moniker after leading both blocks of the Round of 64 in last season's 2005 Greater Omaha Classic, before being eliminated in the first Round of match play.

2006RigasKalfas_small.jpg 2006PatrickAllen_small.jpg Riga Kalfas (left, Florence, Ky.) is second with 3,376 edging Floridian Patrick Allen (right, Wesley Chapel, Fla.), who is third with 3,335. Allen showed his ability to consistently post high scores, topping the 225 mark in 11 of his 14 games.

Two bowlers from Wichita, Kan., round out the top five as Rick Steelsmith and Nathan Bohr sit in fourth and fifth with 3,321 and 3,284, respectively.

David Tessman (Lake Placid, Fla.) topped David Traber (Hebron, Ill.), 245-213, in a one-game roll off for the 32nd and final spot for tomorrow's match play.

The top 32 bowlers advance to Friday's round-robin match play beginning at 11 a.m. with the top 16 after the first nine-game block advancing to a second nine-game block at 6 p.m.

The top five bowlers will advance to Sunday's live ESPN televised finals at 11:30 a.m. CST at Thunderbowl. The winner will take home $25,000 and a one-season Denny's PBA Tour exemption.

Tomek wins Denny's PBA Tour Qualifying Round in Go RVing Classic

Jim_Tomek_4343.jpg With an exemption all but wrapped up for the 2007-08 Denny’s Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour season through the PBA East Region, Jim Tomek Jr. has been able to fine tune his game.

Tomek’s hard work has paid off as he led Wednesday’s Denny’s PBA Tour Qualifying Round for the 2007 Go RVing Classic at Thunderbowl with a 1,634 seven-game pinfall.

With a nearly insurmountable lead, Tomek will most likely earn one of seven exemptions given from the PBA Regional Tour for next season. Tomek has struggled in the Qualifying Rounds this season, however, as this week marks just the second time he’s qualified for the Round of 64.

“I’ve been struggling a little on Wednesdays this year. I’ve been practicing a lot though, especially in this second half, to get things straightened out for next year,” said Tomek (Camp Hill, Pa.), who credited a looser arm swing to his success Wednesday. “It’s a good opportunity to learn. Sometimes things work like they did today, but sometimes they don’t. Today I felt good all the way around: mentally, physically and I made good choices.”

Tomek has also had the opportunity this season to devote his time to helping his girlfriend, Kelly Kulick, who has endured a difficult season as the first woman to earn a full-season exemption on the Tour.

“There are some things Kelly and I have both been working on this season,” added Tomek. “It hurts to see her struggle, but it’s not by lack of effort. We have a lot of minds working on it. There isn’t anyone out here who doesn’t want to see her do well. We feel like two heads are better than one so hopefully it’s not too late.”

Finishing second was Todd Book (Cantonment, Fla.), with 1,617, while six-time titlist Dave D’Entremont (Middleburg Heights, Ohio) finished third with 1,584. Also qualifying were Chad Kloss (Greenfield, Wis.), Craig LeMond (Jasper, Ind.) and Nathan Bohr (Wichita, Kan.). Bohr advanced by winning a one-game roll-off over D.J. Archer (Mineral Wells, Texas), 191-171, after the two tied with 1,534 after seven games.

Advancing as the top amateur was Joshua Edenburn (Council Bluffs, Iowa), who finished fifth overall.
