2006-07 PBA Tour #17

Weber wins his fourth U.S. Open title

Brunswick Zone Carolier in North Brunswick, N.J. (Feb. 26 - March 4, 2007)

2007PBA17PeteWeber.jpg There are few things Pete Weber has yet to accomplish in his Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Hall of Fame career, but surprisingly he has never been named PBA Player of the Year.

With a win in the most grueling tournament of the season Sunday, he's one step closer to that elusive award.

Weber defeated Wes Malott, 210-204, Sunday to win the 64th U.S. Open at Brunswick Zone Carolier, his fourth career U.S. Open crown and record-tying eighth career Major title. The win also put Weber, who has two titles this season, in a tie with Mark Roth for fourth on the all-time titles list with his 34th career Denny's PBA Tour title.

Brunswick Zone Carolier was where Weber found out two years ago that his legendary father, Dick, passed away on February 14, 2005. With his win Sunday, Pete joined his father and Don Carter as the only bowlers to win the U.S. Open or BPAA All-Star – the U.S. Open's predecessor – four times.

2007PBA17PeteWeber2.jpg "This was one of my dreams, to be one of the guys to win four U.S. Opens. I might not be done, I might have six or seven before my career is over," Weber said. "My dad and Don Carter are the only two to win this event four times so I am joining an elite group. Even though the All-Star was not an official title, to me it is, and it is in dad's book and Don's book. So to me, we have 12 U.S. Open titles among us."

Weber struck in his first five frames in the title match after starting with the first eight in his semifinal win, leaving the 10-pin both times. Malott had a couple chances to get back in the match, particularly after Weber opened in the 8th, but Malott struck and spared in the 10th meaning Weber only needed six pins in the 10th frame for the win.

In the semifinal, Weber came close to the first televised 300 game of his career, with eight straight strikes until leaving the 10-pin. The match was decided early on as Jeff Carter, making his first career TV appearance, struck just once in frames 3-7 as Weber went on to the 267-192 win.

In the first match Carter defeated Dave D'Entremont, 185-183. Weber (St. Ann, Mo.) took home $100,000 and a three-season Denny's PBA Tour exemption for the win. Malott (Argyle, Texas) earned $50,000 for second, Carter (Springfield, Ill.) took home $25,000 for third while D'Entremont (Middleburg Heights, Ohio) earned $15,000 for fourth.

The Denny's PBA Tour takes a one-week break before the final three events of the season, starting with the 2007 Pepsi Championship March 14-18 at Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis, Ind. The live ESPN televised finals take place Sunday, March 18, at 12:30 p.m. EST.

Malott earns top seed for 64th U.S. Open finals with 246-245 victory in position round

2006PeteWeber_small.jpg 2006WesMalott_small.jpg One pin was all that separated the top two seeds for Sunday's finals of the 64th U.S. Open, the second of four Majors on the 2006-07 Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour at Brunswick Zone Carolier.

Wes Malott (l.) narrowly edged Pete Weber (r.), 246-245, in the position Round of the 24-game round-robin match play portion of the event to compile a 51-game pinfall of 11,868 with match play awarding 30 bonus pins for a win and 15 for a tie.

Weber had the chance to win the final game if he struck to open the 10th, but left a 10-pin to give Malott the one-pin win and a 17-7 match play record. Weber finished match play in second place with with a 19-5 record and a 11,841, 51-game pinfall.

"There was a lot at stake in that game. The Player of the Year race is going on and both Pete and I are involved. You are also guaranteed no worse than second place, which is a $25,000 difference," said Malott (Argyle, Texas). "Pete is an unbelievable bowler. All you can do is hope to make great shots and hope you get a break every now and then. He's one of the greatest out there."

2006JeffCarter_small.jpg Jeff Carter (left, Springfield, Ill.), who is making his first-ever TV appearance on the Denny's PBA Tour, will look to become just the 18th bowler to win a Major as his first career title. Carter, who led the first eight-game block of match play, ended in third position with 15-9 and 11,643.

Dave_DEntremont_4417.jpg Carter will open Sunday's final taking on six-time titlist Dave D'Entremont (right, Middleburg Heights, Ohio), who ended the round with 11,463 and an 18-6 record to take the fourth seed.

The final four will bowl for the $100,000 top prize and three-season exemption live on ESPN Sunday at Noon EST at Brunswick Zone Carolier.

Carter regains lead in first match play round in 64th U.S. Open

2006USBCOpenJeffCarter.jpg In a situation that he's not accustomed to being in, Jeff Carter has the perfect aggressive mindset and plans to keep it that way. The Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour exempt bowler who has never won a title on the sport's highest level regained the lead Friday night in the 64th U.S. Open at Brunswick Zone Carolier.

Carter, who led the 492-bowler qualifying field on Wednesday, accumulated a record of 6-2 and a 35-game pinfall of 7,870 in the PBA Major's first Round of match play. Carter outdistanced his closest competitor, Pete Weber, by 86 pins in the round-robin portion of the event which carried all previous pinfall from the tournament over and awarded 30 bonus pins for each win and 15 for a tie.

"Not to sound too cliché, but I'm still taking this thing one round at a time," said Carter (Springfield, Ill.). "There are eight more games tomorrow morning. My game plan is to win as many games as possible and pick up as many pins as possible. Being aggressive and having fun is what got me here so far and I don't plan on changing that."

Carter opened the round dropping his first match to Wes Malott, 236-193, before rebounding with three consecutive wins. Carter's only other game under the 200 mark resulted in a game five loss to Dino Castillo (Carrollton, Texas), who moved into fifth place with 7,613.

While Weber (St. Ann, Mo.) had a better winning percentage, going 7-1 in the match play, the 33-time titlist could not make up any ground on Carter in the final game despite beating Sean Rash (Wichita, Kan.), 236-209.

2006PBA09PeteWeber2_small.jpg It was not all disappointing though for Weber (l.), who finished Friday night with 7,784, as he started the round 21st, 200 pins behind then-second place Carter.

Dave_DEntremont_4417.jpg Dave D'Entremont (right, Middleburg Heights, Ohio) also came from the second half of the 24-man round-robin match play field, moving from 17th to third as the only bowler to go a perfect 8-0 in the round and end the night with 7,664.

2006WesMalott_small.jpg Wes Malott (l.), who entered round at the No. 1 position, slipped three spots to fourth, going 5-3 in the round and ending with 7,654.

The final two eight-game blocks take place Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. EST. The top four bowlers advance to Sunday's championship round.

The final four will bowl for the $100,000 top prize and three-season exemption live on ESPN Sunday at Noon EST at Brunswick Zone Carolier.

Malott leads top 24 into round robin match play 64th U.S. Open

2006PBA06WesMalott.jpg In one of the most unpredictable Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Player of the Year races in recent history, Wes Malott is looking to get a leg up with a win in this week's 64th U.S. Open.

Looking for his first career Major title, Malott took the lead Friday heading into round robin match play with a 5,889 27-game pinfall at Brunswick Zone Carolier.

With one title this season, a No. 4 spot in the PBA World Point Rankings and a Tour-high tying five TV appearances, Malott is one of at least a half-dozen bowlers with a chance at the Player of the Year award with four events remaining, three of which are Majors. A win this week could give Malott the edge.

"It's come across my mind a couple times throughout the week when I'm bowling well, but at the same time I have to keep telling myself 'you can't look too far ahead.'" Malott (Argyle, Texas) said. "There are still a lot of games left. I don't want to get ahead of myself and ahead of the game. If I do, I'll get lazy and won't commit and make good shots."

Malott was steady Friday morning, averaging 231.33 over the nine games. He had just one game under 200, and had highs of 258 in game seven and 257 in game nine to take the lead.

Jeff Carter (Springfield, Ill.), who came into this week 42nd in the PBA World Point Rankings with the cut line for an exemption for 2007-08 at 39th, is second with 5,883. Former U.S. Open champion Mika Koivuniemi (Hartland, Mich.) is third with 5,812.

Ronnie Russell.jpg Mike DeVaney.jpg In an exciting final game to decide the 24 bowlers who would advance to match play, Ronnie Russell (left, Indianapolis) fired a 267 to jump from outside the cut to 18th while Mike DeVaney (right, Temecula, Calif.) shot 224 in his final game to earn the final spot in match play ahead of Doug Kent (Newark, N.Y.) by just eight pins.

All pinfall from qualifying carries over into match play, where bowlers earn 30 bonus pins for each win and 15 for each tie.

The first of three round robin match play sessions gets underway tonight at 6 p.m. EST featuring eight games. The final two eight-game blocks take place Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. The top four advance to Sunday's championship round.

The final four will bowl for the $100,000 top prize and three-season exemption live on ESPN Sunday at Noon EST at Brunswick Zone Carolier.

Koivuniemi leads top 123 players into final Round of qualifying in 64th U.S. Open

2006PBA13MikaKoivuniemi.jpg After using the same ball throughout the first two days of competition in this week's 64th U.S. Open, Mika Koivuniemi decided to change things up with a new ball Thursday morning.

The ball change resulted in an opening-game 168. Going back to the Brunswick Fury he used in the first two rounds, the seven-time Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour titlist Koivuniemi averaged 225.00 over the final five games to lead the field heading into the final round of qualifying Friday with a 3,924 18-game pinfall and 218.00 average.

Koivuniemi leads 123 bowlers into Friday's nine-game block, after which the top 24 will advance to round robin match play.

"The first game I changed to another ball and missed the pocket one time and shot 160 so I decided I was not going to change balls anymore. The Fury gives me strikes so it's the best ball," Koivuniemi said. "Right now, nothing is going to change. My game plan is still the same: to throw it at the 3-pin and throw it harder. If I make the top 24 I might look at it differently but right now there are still so many people playing different places."

The 2001 U.S. Open champion, Koivuniemi (Hartland, Mich.) will be looking for his third career Major title. He won his seventh career title earlier this season in the Sun City Classic in El Paso, Texas.

2006USBCOpenJeffCarter_small.jpg 2006SeanRash_small.jpg Jeff Carter (left, Springfield, Ill.), who held the lead after Wednesday's second round, is second with 3,885, while 24-year-old phenomenon Sean Rash (right, Wichita, Kan.), who has captured two titles this season, is third with 3,853.

Among the other bowlers advancing Thursday was three-time U.S. Open champion Pete Weber (St. Ann, Mo.) who sits eighth with 3,829 and all-time Tour title leader and two-time U.S. Open champion Walter Ray Williams Jr. (Ocala, Fla.) who is 12th with 3,807.

2006PBATTKellyKulick_small.jpg Kelly Kulick (Uleft, nion, N.J.), the first woman to earn a full-season exemption on the Tour who is fighting to maintain that exemption for next season, advanced past the first cut, finishing 76th with 3,632. Three other women, Carolyn Dorin-Ballard (N. Richland Hills, Texas), Liz Johnson (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) and Olivia Sandham (Wichita, Kan.) also made the first cut.

Sami_Konsteri_4174.jpg Sami Konsteri
from Finland (r.) is the top-ranked foreign player in 16th place with 3,793.

Earning the final spot in tomorrow's round was John Kreyer Jr. (Fridley, Minn.) who finished 123rd with 3,537, just two pins ahead of PBA Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia (Manalapan, N.J.).

Friday's final round of qualifying gets underway at 9 a.m. EST. The first of three round robin sessions gets underway Friday evening at 6 p.m.

The top four after match play will bowl for the $100,000 top prize and three-season exemption live on ESPN Sunday at Noon EST at Brunswick Zone Carolier.

Carter moves to the top in 64th U.S. Open in second qualifying round

2006USBCOpenJeffCarter.jpg A little work goes a long way. At least that's the case for Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour exempt bowler Jeff Carter.

Carter, who entered this week's 64th U.S. Open 42nd on the PBA World Point Rankings, currently sits on top of the 489 bowler field after two days of qualifying at Brunswick Zone Carolier.

Carter, who has a 12-game pinfall of 2,673, credited work with his ball rep for his early success in the Open, the second of four PBA Majors.

"To be honest (Storm Ball Rep Chris) Schlemer and I have been working a lot the last couple weeks and some of the things we've been working on are really coming together, so I guess I owe it all to him," said Carter (Springfield, Ill.).

"There are a lot of problems in my physical game we've been trying to fix. This is as good as I've felt physically in a while. It's nice when things like that come together. I matched up really well the last couple days."

Carter opened Wednesday's action with a 235 followed by four consecutive games over the 200 mark, including a 256 in game four, to finish with a six-game total of 1,319.

2006WesMalott_small.jpg 2006MikaKoivuniemi_small.jpg Wes Malott (left, Argyle, Texas) is 30 pins behind Carter in second with 2,643. Malott, who finished with 1,282 in six games on Tuesday, improved with 1,361 on Wednesday. Mika Koivuniemi (right, Hartland, Mich.) is in third with 2,631 after finishing Wednesday with 1,293.

Rounding out the top four is Ritchie Allen (Columbia, S.C.). Allen, who was to be exempt on the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour before receiving an injury exemption to the 2007-08 Denny's PBA Tour, ended Wednesday action with 1,241 for a 12-game total of 2,604.

2006PBANormDuke_small.jpg Tommy Delutz.jpg Norm Duke (l.), Clermont, Fla., who has missed most of the season due to a toe injury, is seventh with 2,593. First round leader Tommy Delutz Jr. (r.), Flushing, N.Y., slipped to 10th place with 2,575 behind an 1,137 series on day two.

Mark Buffa.jpg Sami_Konsteri_4174.jpg Canadian Mark Buffa (l.) is the tip-ranked foreigner in 21st place, 2,530, while Sami Konsteri (r.), Finland, leads the small group from Europe with 2,499 in 26th position. Dino Castillo, Carrollton, Texas, who has a comfortable lead in the 2006-07 PBA non-exempt points race, is 24th with 2,504.

Olivia Sandham.jpg 2006TommyJones_small.jpg Former Team USA member Olivia Sandham (l.), Wichita, Kan., is the best woman in the field in 33rd place with 2,482. Defending champion Tommy Jones (r.), Simpsonville, S.C. has some work to do as he is currently in 73rd position with 2,422.

The entire field returns Thursday morning for another six games with the first squad beginning at 8 a.m. EST. The top 25 percent of the field (123) will advance to Friday's nine-game block Friday morning at 9 a.m. before being cut to the top 24 for round-robin match play.

The top four bowlers will advance to Sunday's live ESPN televised stepladder finals at Noon EST at Brunswick Zone Carolier. The winner will take home $100,000 and a three-season Denny's PBA Tour exemption.

Delutz sets the pace on Day One in 64th U.S. Open

2006PBA08TommyDelutz.jpg In a tournament known for low scores and challenging lane conditions, Tommy Delutz Jr. made sure he took advantage of the one day in which he could rack up high scores.

Delutz averaged 239.67 with a 1,438 six-game pinfall Tuesday to take the lead after day one of the 64th U.S. Open, the second of four Major events on the Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour.

The 492-bowler field is split into three squads over the first three days of qualifying. The first and third squads bowl on freshly oiled lanes, while the second squad bowls on lanes already broken down which typically results in higher scores. Each squad bowls at different times during the three days of qualifying.

"This is old school bowling today. The U.S. Open starts tomorrow for me," Delutz (Flushing, N.Y.) said. "If you are an exempt bowler or a top amateur, this is where you get your pins. You stock up your pins here and then try to survive the fresh tomorrow."

Bowling on the second squad Tuesday, Delutz came out on fire with a 279 in game one. After a 194 and 201 in games two and three, Delutz averaged 254.67 over the final three games to build a huge lead.

A two-time Denny's PBA Tour titlist, Delutz is looking for his first Major title. He has not historically bowled well in the U.S. Open, finishing no better than 40th the last five seasons.

"I usually despise the U.S. Open," Delutz said. "Since the PBA went to set oil patterns, I've done horrible at the U.S. Open. But it's my first time home since January 2 and I'm able to sleep in my own bed. Even with this being a Major, I have a low level of stress this weekend."

Finishing second with 1,376 was 62nd U.S. Open champion Chris Barnes (Double Oak, Texas). The eight-time titlist who captured this season's GEICO Classic, is one of several bowlers looking to break out this week and take control of a wide open PBA Player of the Year race. This week's event is one of three Majors in the final four events of the 2006-07 season.

Ritchie Allen (Columbia, S.C.) who returned to the lanes this week after missing the entire season to date due to a right hand injury, is fifth with 1,363.

In addition to Barnes, three other former U.S. Open champions are in the top 30, as three-time U.S. Open winner Pete Weber (St. Ann, Mo.) is 22nd with 1,303, two-time champion Del Ballard Jr. (N. Richland Hills, Texas) is 27th with 1,284 and one-time winner Mika Koivuniemi (Hartland, Mich.) is ninth with 1,338.

The entire field returns Wednesday for another six games, followed by the final six game block on Thursday after which the field will be cut to the top 123. Those 123 will bowl another nine games on Friday to determine the final 24 bowlers for round robin match play.

The top four after Saturday's match play will bowl for the $100,000 top prize and three-season exemption live on ESPN Sunday at Noon EST at Brunswick Zone Carolier.
