2006 Asian Rankings
Ong and Armein are the 2006 Asian Rankings champions
Remy Ong (l.) from Singapore and Putty Armein from Indonesia won the 2006 men's and women's Asian Bowling Federation (ABF) rankings. After the ranking points given for the 42nd QubicaAMF World Cup were finally added Ong maintained a slim 8-point lead in the men's rankings with 575 total ranking points while Armein held a dominating 135-point lead in the women's rankings with 564. Ong, a two-time World Champion and three-time gold medalist in the 2002 Asian Games, won the coveted title for the second time after 2002.
Trailing Ong by just 8 points to sit in second place was Ryan Lalisang, Indonesia (567), who won the gold medal in Singles in the 2006 Asian Games in Qatar. Wu Siu Hong, Hong Kong, a two-time Asian ranking champion (2001, 2003) was third with 498 points.
Next were Malaysians Alex Liew (461), the 2006 ranking leader and Azidi Ameran (432) with World Masters Champion Biboy Rivera, Philippines, in sixth place at 417. Seventh place belonged to world traveler Jason Belmonte from Australia with 394.
Belmonte, who also finished seventh in the European rankings, decided to use the European qualifying spot for the World Ranking Masters in Lake Wales, Fla., May 2-8, 2007. Belmonte's decision opened the door for Zulmazran Zulkifli, Malaysia, who finished in ninth place with 349, 30 pins behind Yannaphon Larpapharat, Thailand, who took the eights and final spot with 379.
Armein, who ended the best year in her career with a silver medal in Singles and a fifth-place finish in Masters at the Doha Asian Games, held of the complete Malaysian national team that qualified for the World Ranking Masters. The only other non-Malaysian among the top 8 was Wang Yu-Ling, Chinese Taipei, in fifth position with 256 points.
Leading the Malaysian players was veteran Shalin Zulkifli, who finished second with 429 points. Third place belonged to the shooting star, Esther Cheah (316), who won two gold and three silver medals in Doha. Fourth place belonged to Lai Kin Ngoh with 296.
Rounding out the top 8 were Zandra Aziela (249), Choy Poh Lai (244) and Wendy Chai (244). Chai finished second in the 2005 World Ranking Masters, when the event was also held in Lake Wales, Fla. like this year.
