Israel continues to set the pace in the Girls Trios event at 20th European Youth Championships

Overnight leader Israel continued to set the pace in the Girls Trios event during the second three-game block Wednesday morning at the 20th European Youth Championships in Thessaloniki, Greece. Mor Aviram, Mor Dayan and Liat Vizenfeld (l-r with coach Lea Cohen) started with a huge 683 game, but showed nerves in game #5 when the young Israelis missed eight spares and finished with 543.
The trio rebounded with 594 in the last game to add a three-game set of 1818 to yesterday's 1937 high score.
With 17 of 31 trios in the books, the Israelis lead the field with 3757, a 208.72 average over six games. Their closest competitor and toughest rival for the gold medal in Squad 2 is Germany with Tina Hulsch, Janin Ribguth and Melanie Birlinger (l-r with coach Jimmy Hartmann). The Germans need 1869 to overtake Israel by one pin.
England's Sarah Overall, Katrina Maciver and Hayley White (l-r with coach Andy Penny) are eleven pins behind Germany. Dutch trio Carmen Haandrikman, Kelly Plummen and Lisanne Breeschoten finished Squad 2 another 82 pins behind England in third place.
Belgium with Carolin Witvrouwen, Anneleen Mortier and Valerie Van Haver are currently in second place with 3497, a 194.28 average. 17-year-old Witvrouwen (pictured left) rolled a 278 in game two, game 5 overall, the highest in the girls division of the championship thus far. Currently in third place are Jenny Johansson, Sara Lyck and Sanna Hellden from from Sweden with 3432 (190.67). "One does not need to be a prophet to foresee that neither the Belgian nor the Swedish girls will win a medal.
