2007 PBA Senior Tour #1

Ozio captures the season-opening PBA Senior Manassas Open

Bowl America Manassas in Manassas, Va. (April 28-May 1, 2007)

2007PBAS01DavidOzio.jpg After bowling part-time on the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour the last three seasons, David Ozio showed Tuesday night a full season of the PBA Hall of Famer could be a scary predicament for the rest of the Tour. Picture courtesy of PBA LLC.

Ozio captured the season-opening PBA Senior Manassas Open at Bowl America Manassas, knocking off fellow PBA Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia, 258-232, to win his second career PBA Senior Tour title.

The 2004 PBA Senior Rookie of the Year handed Petraglia his only loss of the day after he went 6-0 in match play to advance to the final. Petraglia was looking for his first win on the PBA Senior Tour since 2001.

Petraglia (Manalapan, N.J.) held the lead midway through the match. Facing an important shot in the 7th frame, Ozio chose to re-rack the right lane twice. The move paid off as he struck to stay close to Petraglia who then made a key mistake in the 8th frame when he chopped a 3-6 spare attempt. Ozio responded with four consecutive strikes to close out the match.

“That rack was closed and all week it was blower 7-10 when that happened. When you’re under that much pressure, and with that much adrenaline going, you tend to throw it hard so I was trying to slow it down. I didn’t want to throw a rocket,” Ozio said. “(Norm) Duke taught me to have all the different tools in the tool box. When you’re bowling the caliber of these players you are never comfortable until the wood is out.”

With his first victory since the 2004 PBA Senior U.S. Open, Ozio will be a force on this year’s Tour which is loaded with PBA Hall of Famers and other senior stars.

“I’m back to bowling for a living and I never thought that would be the case. This last year has been pretty amazing. I have bowled really well the whole year and it’s indescribable to get into synch like that,” Ozio (Beaumont, Texas) said. “This was an interesting week in that early in the week my pin carry was so bad that I spent three days trying to get the corner pins out. I made a big swing change the second game of the second round and after that I averaged 250 for the rest of the block. It managed to hold all the way through.”

To get to the finals, Ozio had to knock off two-time defending PBA Senior Player of the Year Tom Baker, 212-206, in the semifinal. Baker (King, N.C.) could have doubled in the 10th to lock out Ozio, but he left a 10-pin on his first shot in the 10th, and Ozio doubled for the win.

Petraglia advanced to the title match with a 258-195 win over Rohn Morton (Vancouver, Wash.)

The PBA Senior Tour next heads to Rockford, Ill., for the 2007 Hammer Ladies and Legends presented by the Illinois State Bowling Proprietors Association, May 5-10, at The Cherry Bowl. It marks he first PBA Ladies and Legends event since 1996. The top 24 senior bowlers and top 24 females after qualifying will team up for match play and a chance to take home $15,000.

Baker in familiar position PBA Senior Manassas Open

2006PBASTomBaker.jpg It took just two days for Tom Baker to prove he’s not going to slow down in his third season on the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour.

After getting off to a slow start Sunday in the first day of the season-opening 2007 PBA Senior Manassas Open, Baker blitzed the field Monday, averaging 248.50 over his eight games to take the lead at Bowl America Manassas with a 3,798 16-game pinfall.

Baker has dominated the last two PBA Senior Tour seasons, winning the PBA Senior Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year in 2005, his first season on Tour. Last season, he won a record-tying four titles in just nine events, including both Major events, to win his second consecutive PBA Senior Player of the Year award.

This season, the Tour features 13 events and a bevy of new players who should give Baker a challenge. PBA Hall of Famer and 15-time Denny’s PBA Tour titlist Steve Cook and seven-time titlist Hugh Miller are in their rookie seasons, and PBA Hall of Famer and 2004 PBA Senior Rookie of the Year David Ozio will be bowling full-time for the first time after bowling part-time the last three seasons.

Nevertheless, Baker is showing he’s still the man to beat. Last year’s runner-up in Manassas earned one of eight byes into the Round of 16.

“The competition is a lot better out here with Cook, Miller, Sam Zurich and some other guys, so it’ll be a lot tougher this year,” Baker, the only senior bowler who is also exempt on the Denny’s PBA Tour, said. “We’ll see what happens. The lanes seem to be a little bit higher scoring than last year. It’ll be tough to dominate in that kind of circumstance.”

Baker (King, N.C.) started the day in 14th, but opened with games of 247, 257, 257 and 260 to take the lead. He had no games below 235 Monday, firing four of his eight games over 250.

“I just couldn’t carry yesterday. I think I left 15 10-pins. I had games yesterday where I bowled just as well but I just carried better today,” Baker said.

Finishing right behind Baker was 10-time PBA Senior Tour titlist Dale Eagle (Tavares, Fla.) with 3,754, while Rohn Morton (Vancouver, Wash.), who fired one of two 300 games in Sunday’s first round, is third with 3,746. Sunday’s leader, Kerry Painter (Henderson, Nev.), fired a 300 game on Monday to finish fourth with 3,710. PBA Hall of Famer David Ozio (Beaumont, Texas) rounds out the top five with 3,696.

Bob Chamberlain (The Villages, Fla.) finished 32nd with 3,495 to earn the final spot in match play by just two pins over Judge Abruzzese (Bronx, N.Y.).

The top 32 advance to Tuesday’s match play with the top eight earning byes into the Round of 16. The Round of 32, featuring bowlers 17-32 bowling each other, gets underway at 9 a.m. ET. The field will be narrowed down to two bowlers who will compete for the $8,000 top prize Tuesday evening.

300 games (1) - Kerry Painter.

Painter takes early lead in 2007 PBA Senior Tour season-opener in Manassas

2007PBAS01KerryPainter_small.jpg Kerry Painter made a good impression in his first career Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour event as a PBA member Sunday at Bowl America Manassas. Picture courtesy of PBA.

The 54-year-old, who just became a PBA member this week, fired a 1,916 eight-game pinfall for a 239.50 average Sunday to take the lead after the first day of qualifying in the season-opening 2007 PBA Senior Manassas Open.

Painter finished 17th in last year's 2006 PBA Senior Manassas Open as a non-member in his only other PBA Senior Tour event. His brother, Roger, is also competing this week as a non-member. Roger, from nearby Woodbridge, Va., got off to the better start between the two, firing a 266 in the opening game to Kerry's 248. Kerry moved into second with games of 238 and 235 in games two and three. He never dropped out of the top five over the final five games, finishing with a 268 to take the lead.

"It didn't turn out too bad after it started in frustration. I had so much early on but couldn't get anything for it," said Painter (Henderson, Nev.). "The last game it all fell together for me. I had a good look all day and can't complain about the start of the set, but the first four games I couldn't break it for a big game.

"Games five, six and seven I must have left 15 smash 10-pins. I wasn't being firm with it and maybe got tired and was just laying the ball down. On one shot I put a little more hand in it and the 10-pin popped out so the last two games I stayed firm with the shot and went 259-268."

Dale Eagle (Tavares, Fla.), who sits fourth all-time with 10 PBA Senior Tour titles, is second with 1,895. Michael Lessar (Naples, N.Y.) is third with 1,885, while PBA Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia (Manalapan, N.J.), looking for his first PBA Senior Tour title since 2001, is fourth with 1,878.

Last year's PBA Senior Manassas Open champion Henry Gonzalez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) is 15th with 1,808. Gonzalez has won the PBA Senior Tour's season-opener each of the last two seasons after winning the 2005 PBA Senior Empire State Open and last year's event at Bowl America Manassas over eventual 2006 PBA Senior Player of the Year Tom Baker. Baker sits one spot ahead of Gonzalez in 14th with 1,810.

All 142 competitors will bowl another eight games of qualifying on Monday after which the field will be cut to the top 32 for match play. The top eight bowlers will earn byes into the Round of 16. The final two will bowl for the $8,000 top prize Tuesday evening.
