Kulick leads undefeated players at USBC Queens
Tish Johnson high qualifier at USBC Queens
For the past year, Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J., has been practicing and competing at bowling's highest level. She reaped the rewards of that hard work Monday at the 2007 United States Bowling Congress Queens.Kulick, who a year ago became the first woman to earn an exemption on the Denny's Professional Bowlers Association Tour, led a group of 16 undefeated players in three-game, double-elimination match play in the Queens at AMF Carolina Lanes.
The former Team USA member overcame a 53-pin first-game deficit to defeat Anne Marie Duggan of Edmond, Okla., in her second-round match 608-584. In her first match, Kulick defeated Rachel Perez of Maumelle, Ark., 677-596.
"A year of practice and competition have really helped me fine tune my game," Kulick said. "I've been bowling non-stop since I earned my spot on Tour and have had a full-year of bowling on competitive conditions against competitive players. If I'm good enough to be on the men's tour, I'm definitely good enough to compete out here against the best women in the world."
Joining Kulick in the winners bracket is three-time Queens champion Wendy Macpherson of Henderson, Nev., who needed overtime to dispose of Michelle Feldman of Skaneateles, N.Y. The two ended their match in a tie at 674, forcing a one-game roll-off, which Macpherson won 205-180.
Other big names still alive in the winners bracket are USBC High School spokesperson Carolyn Dorin-Ballard of North Richland Hills, Texas, USBC Youth spokesperson Diandra Asbaty of Chicago and last year's Queens runner-up Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y.
Tish Johnson of Colorado Springs, Colo., who earned the top seed in match play earlier in the day by finishing as the high qualifier after 15 games, is also still undefeated. She took out Paula Vilas of the Dominican Republic 607-548 and defeated Sharon Koh of Malaysia 724-598.
In the contenders bracket, defending champion Shannon Pluhowsky of Phoenix was eliminated with a 618-587 loss to Japan's Mihoko Matsuoka-Ishikawa. Pluhowsky defeated Lisa Wagner of Auburn, Ga., 626-514 in the first round before being sent to the contenders bracket with a 667-629 loss to Asbaty.
Also Monday, Team USA member Tina Stickney of Goodyear, Ariz., bowled the 15th perfect game in the 47-year history of the USBC Queens. Stickney's 300 game came in her 774-534 opening-round victory over Crystal Schoneman of Orlando, Fla. Stickney, however, lost her next two matches and was eliminated.
The match-play field began with 64 players Monday afternoon and after two rounds in the contenders bracket, 32 players were eliminated.
Match play continues Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. Eastern. The tournament concludes with the top five bowlers (four from the winners bracket and the contenders bracket champion) facing off live on ESPN2 in the stepladder finals Wednesday at 7 p.m. Eastern.
In addition to the live telecast of the Queens, the event is also scheduled to be re-aired on May 20 at 1 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.
The USBC Queens, which features an overall prize fund of $200,000 with $30,000 going to the champion, is presented by Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus Hotel/Casinos in Reno, Nev., and is sponsored by Kegel, the official lane maintenance provider for USBC.

Johnson will be joined by 63 other players, including defending champion Shannon Pluhowsky (r.) of Phoenix, who will compete to determine the final five bowlers for the ESPN2-televised finals on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Eastern."Personally, I think it's a disadvantage to be the top seed," said Johnson, whose 25 Professional Women's Bowling Association titles ranks fourth all-time. "Everybody is going to be gunning for me, so I'm just going to try and make good shots like I've done all day today, and we'll see what happens."
Cheryl Daniels of West Bloomfield, Mich., earned the No. 2 seed with 3,317 while Tiffany Stanbrough of Oklahoma City was third with 3,312.
With qualifying now over, Pluhowsky finally gets a chance to enter the competition. As defending champion, the three-time U.S. Amateur champion will automatically be seeded No. 32 in the bracket.
