2007 PBA Senior Tour #2

Kossert, Johnsson win the title in PBA Senior Ladies & Legends

The Cherry Bowl in Rockford, Ill. (May 5-10, 2007)

2007PBAS02JohnsonKossert.jpg It took 11 years, but Liz Johnson finally repeated as the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Ladies and Legends champion.

Johnson, who teamed up with Mike Kench to win the last Ladies and Legends event in 1996, this time teamed up with Roger Kossert to take home the 2007 PBA Hammer Ladies and Legends presented by the Illinois State Bowling Proprietors Association at The Cherry Bowl Thursday with a 247-235 win over top-seeded Johnny Petraglia and Olivia Sandham. Picture PBA LLC.

Johnson came through in the clutch in the 10th frame of the title match to seal the win, which was Kossert's second career PBA Senior Tour title. After Petraglia struck twice in the 10th, Johnson needed a strike with her first ball in 10th and a nine-spare to win the match. She struck twice to add to her already impressive bowling resume.

"It's hard to believe I was the defending champion, it's been so long," Johnson (Cheektowaga, N.Y.), an 11-time winner on the now-defunct Professional Women's Bowling Association (PWBA) Tour, said. "It feels good to be back in the winners' circle. I've had a lot of seconds the last couple years."

One of Johnson's second-place finishes recently came in the 2005 Banquet Open where she became the first woman to advance to the championship Round of a Denny's PBA Tour event. Johnson fell to Tommy Jones that day, but made more history later that summer when she became the first woman to win a PBA singles title, taking home the 2005 PBA East Region King Pin Lanes Open.

Petraglia (Manalapan, N.J.) and Sandham (Wichita, Kan.) led throughout round robin match play Thursday to earn a berth in the stepladder title match. After both teams struck in the first four frames and nine-spared in the fifth frame, things turned in the sixth when Petraglia flagged a 7-pin. After Johnson struck in the sixth, Kossert repeated Petraglia's mistake when he, too, missed a 7-pin.

Sandham and Petraglia responded with strikes in the 7th and 8th, but a nine-spare in the 9th gave Johnson and Kossert some breathing room. Petraglia's two strikes in the 10th put the pressure on Johnson, but she responded, allowing her team to take home the $15,000 top prize.

"We talked in the morning today about a plan and it worked," Kossert (Lithia, Fla.) said. "Liz bowled on the left lane all day and I bowled on the right. It worked well because we were very comfortable and it was very consistent across the house. The first time we switched lanes was for the title match. Her look wasn't as good as she anticipated. It was really breaking down hard and we decided we'd switch and both get a fresher look. It worked out well."

Johnson and Kossert advanced to the title match with a 208-182 win over Kelly Kulick and PBA Hall of Famer Steve Cook. The fourth-seeded Kulick and Cook had worked their way up the ladder after wins over Kari Schwager and Bob Chamberlain, 241-236, and Shannon Pluhowsky and John Shreve Sr., 223-202.

Next week the PBA Senior Tour heads to Waukegan, Ill., for the 2007 PBA Northern Illinois Classic, May 12-16 in Mundelein, Ill., and Waukegan, Ill.

Shreve and Pluhowsky team for match play at PBA Senior Ladies & Legends

With one of the strongest fields in bowling on the lanes at The Cherry Bowl this week, it’s no wonder bowlers aren’t concerned with who they’re matching up with for the doubles portion of the event.

Nevertheless, John Shreve Sr. and Shannon Pluhowsky will go into Thursday’s match play as the team to beat after leading the Legends and the Ladies sides, respectively, after three days of qualifying in the 2007 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Hammer Ladies and Legends presented by the Illinois State Bowling Proprietors Association.

Pluhowsky (Phoenix, Ariz.), who led the ladies’ side from start to finish, has been the most consistent and dominating player in the event thus far. She finished qualifying with a 3,598 15-game pinfall for a 239.87 average, including a 268 in game two Wednesday to solidify her hold on the top spot. She’ll team up with Shreve (Elyria, Ohio) for Baker-style round robin match play in which players alternate shots each frame. Shreve finished qualifying with 3,698.

Finishing second on the Legends side was Don Patterson, who has had a big week, including his first career 300 game Tuesday, to make a charge up the standings. Patterson will team up with Amanda Burgoyne (Newport, Minn.), but took the same attitude nearly every other bowler did in this week’s event.

"I wouldn't care if it was the 24th-place bowler, I'm happy just to make the cut," Patterson (Knoxville, Tenn.) said. "The field in this building is outstanding and the scores are so good that anybody could do it any time. Realistically, I am thrilled to bowl with anyone."

Liz Johnson, who teamed up with Mike Kench to win the last Ladies and Legends event in 1996, made a big run Wednesday to move up to fourth on the ladies side. Her 253 average Wednesday was second only to PBA Hall of Famer Steve Cook, who averaged 257.80 Wednesday, including two games of 279 and one 278.

"It's kind of come full circle since this was my first title, singles and doubles," said Johnson (Cheektowaga, N.Y.), who will team up with Roger Kossert (Lithia, Fla.). "I've been battling a cold and I've felt terrible but it actually kept me slow. I found a ball that gave me better carry and I made better shots today. I felt like I was in a little bit of a zone and everything kind of came together for me today."

Steve Cook (Granite Bay, Calif.) moved up to fifth with 3,588 and will team up with Kelly Kulick (Union, N.J.), who made history this year as the first woman ever to bowl full-time on the Denny's PBA Tour. Kulick finished fifth on the ladies side with 3,399.

PBA Hall of Famer Mark Roth, who is bowling in his first PBA Senior Tour event since 2003, finished 19th with 3,395 and will match-up with Sherree Monaco (Carpentersville, Ill.). Match play gets underway Thursday at 10 a.m. CT. The top five teams after the 24 games of Baker-style match play will advance to the stepladder finals Thursday evening at 7 p.m. CT. The winning team will take home $15,000.

Pluhowsky leads Ladies & Legends after 10 qualifying games

Shannon_Pluhowsky_4262.jpg With no women's tour to bowl on full time, Shannon Pluhowsky will just have to settle for dominating any tour she can find.

The seven-time Team USA member took the overall lead Tuesday in the 2007 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Hammer Ladies and Legends presented by the Illinois State Bowling Proprietors Association, finishing atop the field of 127 PBA Senior Tour bowlers and 50 of the top women bowlers.

Pluhowsky (Phoenix, Ariz.), who finished with a 2,483 10-game pinfall for a 248.30 average, has so far beaten out the likes of PBA Hall of Famers Tom Baker, David Ozio, Johnny Petraglia and Mark Roth in the PBA Senior Tour's second event of the season.

The left-hander blew away the ladies' field, leading the next-highest finisher, Team USA teammate Amanda Burgoyne, by 180 pins. Burgoyne (Newport, Minn.) finished second with 2,302.

Pluhowsky opened her five-game block Tuesday with a 226 before games of 246, 269 and 276. She finished with a 222 to take the overall lead.

John Shreve Sr. (Elyria, Ohio) leads the Legends' side after averaging 252.80 Tuesday, including a 299 in his third game of the day. He finished the first two days with a 2,468 10-game pinfall and will look to stay in the top spot which would team him with Pluhowsky for Thursday's match play should she maintain her lead. The top 24 seniors and top 24 ladies will pair up for round robin match play based on qualifying position.

"She throws a great ball and is really on top of her game right now. I would take her," Shreve said of Pluhowsky. "But I've seen a lot of great ladies out there. It's a good idea to run these kinds of tournaments and give them a chance to get back on their feet. They deserve it and they've earned it. They've bowled some big games out here. I have too so whoever I get they'll be stuck with me too."

The 58-year-old Shreve is looking for his first career PBA Senior Tour title. He owns just one PBA title, a PBA Senior Regional Tour doubles event in 2001.

"That would be a great thing especially because of all the great bowlers that are out here," Shreve said of winning his first title. "There are a lot of guys who have been out here for a long time and a lot of great new bowlers and the competition is getting tougher and tougher."

Don Patterson (Knoxville, Tenn.) fired a 300 game Tuesday to move into second with 2,456 heading into the final day of qualifying.

On the ladies side, 20-time Professional Women's Bowling Association (PWBA) titlist Carolyn Dorin-Ballard (N. Richland Hills, Texas) is third with 2,285, while Kelly Kulick (Union, N.J.), last year's history-making exempt bowler on the Denny's PBA Tour, is eighth with 2,209.

The final five-game qualifying round will take place Wednesday after which the field will be cut to the top 24 legends and top 24 ladies. The top five teams after match play will advance to the stepladder finals Thursday evening at 7 p.m. CT.

Painter leads first day of qualifying in the 2007 PBA Hammer Ladies and Legends

2007PBAS01KerryPainter_small.jpg Heading into the 2007 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour season, several big-name rookies were expected to make an immediate impact on the Tour. Kerry Painter was not one of those big names, but so far he's emerging as the early favorite for PBA Senior Rookie of the Year.

Painter, who just became a PBA member a week ago, led the field after the first day of qualifying in the 2007 PBA Hammer Ladies and Legends presented by the Illinois State Bowling Proprietors Association (BPA) with a 1,253 five-game pinfall Monday at The Cherry Bowl. It's the second time in as many weeks he's led after the first round.

In last week's season-opening PBA Senior Manassas Open, his first career event as a member, Painter led the field after the first day of qualifying and finished the event fifth after losing to eventual champion David Ozio in the Round of 8. Though it was a strong finish for his first event, Painter was disappointed in the result.

"Last week was very disappointing. I've bowled a lot of matches and I think I'm one of the better match play bowlers out there. I shot 300 on that pair earlier, but I went in with a preconceived notion of how to play that pair and it was totally wrong," Painter said of his match against Ozio. "I was disappointed to bowl that well and then die, but on the other token, I'm going to forget about that and move on. Sometimes you have to take a step back to take a step forward."

Painter, who fired a 289 in his final game to take the lead, will look to stay in the top 24 after three days of qualifying to earn a spot in match play. The top 24 seniors and top 24 ladies advance to match play where they will team up based on qualifying position. This week's event marks the first PBA Ladies and Legends since 1996.

"This event is really fun. It's a great format and it's great bowling with the women," Painter (Henderson, Nev.) said. "The higher you finish, the better your chances are of getting a better partner. This is a very tough format with 120 bowlers and just 24 making match play. I have a good start on it so hopefully nothing goes wrong and I can bowl with one of the better girls. I need one to carry me."

Leading the field on the ladies side was Shannon Pluhowsky (Phoenix, Ariz.), a Team USA member and the 2006 USBC Queens champion, with 1,244. Pluhowsky ran away from the field in the first of three squads Monday morning, coming out of the gates with games of 256, 278 and 258. She finished 50 pins ahead of 20-time Professional Women's Bowling Association (PWBA) titlist Carolyn Dorin-Ballard (N. Richland Hills, Texas), who finished second 1,194.

The field of 127 men and 50 women will bowl two additional rounds of qualifying Tuesday and Wednesday before the field is cut to the top 24 legends and top 24 ladies. The 24 teams will bowl round robin match play Thursday with the top five teams advancing to the stepladder finals Thursday evening at 7 p.m. CT.
