2007 PBA Senior Tour #3

Rookie Sam Zurich wins his first title PBA Senior title in just his second career event

Sunset Bowl, Waukegan, IL (May 12-16, 2007)

2007PBAS03SamZurich2.jpg Sam Zurich was so surprised with his performance this week, he could hardly find the words. The Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour rookie won a title in just his second career event, defeating Michael Henry, 205-200, Wednesday to win the 2007 PBA Senior Northern Illinois Classic at Sunset Bowl.

Zurich, who just turned 50 in December, led the tournament from start to finish. He was the top seed for match play to earn one of eight byes into the Round of 16, where he was pitted against Pete Couture, who had knocked Zurich out of the Round of 16 in his first career event two weeks ago in Manassas, Va.

After dropping the first game to Couture, Zurich came back to win the next three games and take the best-of-five match, 3-1. He then defeated eighth-seeded Norb Wetzel in the Round of 8 and fellow PBA Senior Tour rookie and PBA Hall of Famer Steve Cook in the semifinal.

In the title match, Zurich trailed early on before Henry left a 6-7-10 split and opened in the sixth frame. Zurich responded with three strikes in the next four frames, forcing Henry to double in the 10th. Henry struck with his first ball in the 10th and threw a solid shot with his second ball, but left a 7-pin to give Zurich the narrow victory.

"I'm elated. I can't tell you how much this means to me to have the success I've had in a relatively short period of time," Zurich said. "It's the greatest feeling. I just kept believing and had positive thoughts and things just worked out."

Zurich was the recipient of a lucky break in his semifinal match against Cook. Leading the one-game match, Zurich opened in the 8th frame, giving Cook a chance to double which would have forced Zurich to double. Cook, however, left a 2-10 split and opened, meaning Zurich only needed nine pins to win. He then left a split of his own – a 4-6-10 – but picked up the 6- and 10-pins to squeak by with a 214-213 win.

"Mike bowled great all week and I knew I had my hands full," Zurich (Grant, Fla.) said. "I didn't want to end up in a position where I had to finish the last match after what happened against Cook so I let him finish and it worked out where he needed to double."

Zurich, who owns two Denny's PBA Tour titles, took home $8,000 for the win. Henry (Brunswick, Ohio), who defeated Vince Mazzanti Jr., 269-245, in the semifinals, earned $4,500. Cook (Granite Bay, Calif.) and Mazzanti (Levittown, Pa.) each took home $3,000.

Next week the PBA Senior Tour heads to Dayton, Ohio for the 2007 PBA Senior Dayton Classic, May 18-22 at Capri Bowling Lanes. The winner will take home $8,000.

Zurich earns top seed for match play in the PBA Senior Northern Illinois Classic

2007PBAS03SamZurich_small.jpg Sam Zurich is competing in just his second career Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour event, but he's hoping some valuable lessons he has already learned will pay quick dividends. Picture courtesy of PBA.

Zurich earned the top seed for match play in the 2007 PBA Senior Northern Illinois Classic at Sunset Bowl, leading the field after two rounds of qualifying with a 3,901 16-game pinfall and a 243.81 average.

In his first career PBA Senior Tour event two weeks ago in the PBA Senior Manassas Open, Zurich finished eighth in qualifying to earn a bye through the first two rounds of match play. The rookie drew nine-time PBA Senior Tour titlist Pete Couture in the Round of 16, however, who swept Zurich away, three-games-to-none.

"The format was really Greek to me when I came in for that Round of 16 and I wasn't prepared for it," Zurich said. "I think I'll be more prepared mentally this time. This week was the same as it was in Manassas where I bowled the early squad and then had to wait a whole day and half to bowl again. It's a lot of time in between but this time I'll be using it constructively."

Zurich wasn't as sharp Tuesday as he was in Monday's eight-game block when he fired four consecutive games of 279 in one stretch at Fair Haven Lanes in Mundelein, Ill. He opened Tuesday's block at Sunset Bowl with a 248 before slipping with games of 212 and 200. After a strategy change, he got back on track with a 267 in game four, and closed the round with games of 248, 225, 225 and 268.

"When I started bowling today the lanes seemed a little tighter (than Monday) and I got duped into playing further out. That's not where I was playing yesterday," Zurich (Grant, Fla.) said. "I started out well but then went 212-200 and after the third game I really focused on a few other players and saw where they were playing, and I knew my shot yesterday was still there. After that I came back with a couple big games. There are so many transitions that go on and that's the part I'm lacking, but I'll learn after a while."

Roger_Kossert_4689.jpg Roger Kossert (left), who teamed with Liz Johnson last week to win the PBA Ladies and Legends presented by the Illinois State Bowling Proprietors Association, had a big day Tuesday to move into second overall with 3,856. Kossert (Lithia, Fla.) fired the only 300 game of the day and averaged 248.88 for the day.

Michael Henry (Brunswick, Ohio) finished third with 3,750, Henry Gonzalez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) finished fourth with 3,700 and Keith Sharp (Maitland, Fla.) rounded out the top five with 3,694.

Norb_Wetzel_5283.jpg Earning the eighth and final bye into the Round of 16 was Norb Wetzel (right, Fon du Lac, Wis.), who edged out two-time defending PBA Senior Player of the Year Tom Baker (King, N.C.) for the final bye by just three pins.

The top 32 advance to single elimination match play Wednesday which gets underway at 10 a.m. CT. The final two bowlers will square off for the $8,000 top prize Wednesday evening at Sunset Bowl. The Round of 8 gets underway at 7 p.m. with the Round of 4 and championship match immediately following.

Zurich shoots four consecutive 279 games to lead PBA Senior Northern Illinois Classic after Day One

As one of a handful of star rookies on the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour this summer, but not having bowled much recently, Sam Zurich didn't expect a lot out of his first few events on the Tour.

He certainly didn't expect to bowl like he did Monday.

Zurich fired four consecutive games of 279 in his eight-game block at Fair Haven Lanes to take the lead after the first day of qualifying in the 2007 PBA Senior Northern Illinois Classic in Mundelein, Ill, with a 2,008 eight-game pinfall.

The event features two rounds of qualifying at both Fair Haven Lanes and Sunset Bowl in Waukegan, Ill.

The two-time Denny's PBA Tour titlist became eligible for the PBA Senior Tour last December when he turned 50. He bowled the season-opening event in Manassas, Va., and had a strong debut, but after finishing eighth in qualifying, he was swept in the Round of 16 by Pete Couture, three-games-to-none.

On Monday, Zurich was on pace early to break a 16-year-old PBA Senior Tour record for eight-game pinfall. He shot 230 in his first game before missing just four times over the next four games to string together four games of 279. He ended up 86 pins shy of Mickey Spiezio's record of 2,094, finishing with games of 211, 213 and 238.

"I'm very excited. It's probably the largest collection of strikes I've put together in a long time," Zurich (Grant, Fla.) said. "Everything just worked out. My moves went right and I just happened to have the right ball in my hand at the right time. I was excited to be out there."

Zurich is part of a strong rookie class on Tour, including PBA Hall of Famer Steve Cook and seven-time Denny's PBA Tour titlist Hugh Miller, as well as new PBA member Kerry Painter, who led qualifying after the first round in the first two events this season.

"My expectations were not super huge only for the fact that with my job I haven't given a lot to the game the last few years," Zurich said. "I felt that through a bunch of tournaments I would gain strength, but I didn't expect to do this well this quick. I thought it would take me a lot longer to get the cobwebs out and get my body to handle eight games."

Michael Henry (Brunswick, Ohio) led the morning squad and finished second behind Zurich overall with 1,997. Miller (Seattle) finished third with 1,900.

Roger Kossert (Lithia, Fla.), who teamed up with Liz Johnson last week to win the PBA Hammer Ladies and Legends pres. by the Illinois State Bowling Proprietors Association, finished seventh with 1,865.

The field of 113 will bowl another eight-game block Tuesday after which the field will be cut to the top 32 bowlers for Wednesday's match play. The final two bowlers will square off for the $8,000 top prize Wednesday evening at Sunset Bowl. The championship round will get underway at 7 p.m. CT.
