2007 ABFT #2

Kusonpithak and Kim win close matches to capture ABF Tour Thailand leg titles

SF Strike Bowl in Bangkok, Thailand (May 14, 2007)

2007ABFT02Champions.jpg Somjed Kusonpithak, Thailand, defeated his compatriot Kritchawat Jampakao, by two pins, 187-185, while Kim Young Ju, Korea, won the women's championship match against Angkana Netrviseth, Thailand, by the closest possible margin, 203-202, en route to capture the titles in the 2007 Asian Bowling Federation Tour Thailand leg at SF Strike Bowl in Bangkok, Thailand.

In what must have been one of the lowest if not the lowest-scoring final in the ABF Tour history, none of the 16 men that qualified through the final standings of the Thailand Open Masters managed a 200-game in the first round of the finals in one-game single-elimination format.

2007ABFT02SomjedKusonpithak_small.jpg Kusonpithak, left, (228-185 vs. Shaker Al-Hassan) and Jampakhao (235-127 2006 World Ranking Masters champion Khalid Al-Dubyyan, Kuwait) rolled big scores in the quarterfinals and flew past their opponents. All other scores including the winning scores of Lee Jung Jun, Korea (186) and Surasak Manuwong, Thailand (168) were under 200.

Kusonpithak posted another 210 to easily defeat the Korean, 210-156, to set up an all-Thai title match. Jampakhao topped Manuwong, 184-148, in the other semi-final.

2007ABFT02KimYoungJuSomjedKusonpithak.jpg On the women's side, the highlight of the first round was a roll-off between Cookie Lee, Hong Kong, and Petchara Kaewsuk, Thailand, after a 165-165 tie. Lee advanced, 30-25.

Kim Young Ju (left), sixth-place finisher in the Thailand Open, defeated four Thai bowlers on her way to the title. She started with a 198-139 victory over Husanee Chupinij, then edged Gunnalada Aree, 165-160, and topped Saowapha Kunaksorn in the semi-final with the women's high game of 236 to 149.

Angkana Netrviseth, the No. 1 seed after Thailand Open champ Chien Hsiu Lan and Liang Ya Ping, Chinese Taipei, did not compete in the ABF Tour leg, rolled games of 198, 188 and 161 (to 156 vs. Shalima Zalsha, Malaysia) for the right to bowl the Korean in the final.

In the title Match, Netrviseth six-count on the fill ball opened the door for the Korean, who needed a strike on her first shot and a spare to win the match by one pin, and that was exactly what she did, 203-202.
