2007 PBA Senior Tour #4
The Month of the Sam; Maccarone captures first career PBA Senior Tour title in Dayton
Capri Bowling Lanes, Dayton, OH (May 18-22, 2007)
For the second consecutive week, a two-time Denny’s Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour titlist captured his first career PBA Senior Tour title. And for the second consecutive week, that bowler’s name was Sam. A week after Sam Zurich won his first career PBA Senior Tour title in just his second event, Sam Maccarone won his first title in his fourth career event, defeating Rohn Morton, 268-167, to win the 2007 PBA Senior Dayton Classic Tuesday at Capri Bowling Lanes. Picture courtesy of PBA LLC.
In what is quickly becoming the year of the rookie, Maccarone went 7-0 in match play Tuesday and capped the day with a dominating performance in the championship round, which saw him run away from No. 2 seed Dale Eagle, 238-180, in the semifinal and the No. 8 seed Morton, striking eight consecutive times in the title match.
"I told my wife before I left since Sam won last week that meant I would win this week," Maccarone (Glassboro, N.J.) said. "I just had that feeling when I left the house last week and all week I just told myself not to look ahead."
The title match was only close for two frames, as Morton started with an open and a strike while Maccarone started with back-to-back nine-spares. That was as close as Morton would get as he failed to strike again until the 9th frame when the match was already wrapped up. Maccarone struck eight times in a row between frames 3-10, adding his name to the long list of rookies who are having great success this season.
"I particularly like this pattern, but I've never seen it play this far right. The first two days I was never right of 15 and then today I just had air out there so I had to find something outside for the finals," Maccarone, who bowled just two PBA Senior Tour events last season, said. "You really just had to read what the lanes were giving you. When you win, it's because you do all the right things. It's an exciting, unbelievable feeling."
In addition to Zurich and Maccarone, another rookie, PBA Hall of Famer Steve Cook, has made two championship round appearances in the first four events. Cook did not bowl this week after finishing 27th, third and fourth in his three events this season.
Morton, who was looking for his second career PBA Senior Tour title, advanced to the title match with a 232-227 win over PBA Hall of Famer David Ozio, who was looking for his second title of the season. Ozio had a chance to strike out to win the match, but a spare and strike gave Morton a chance to double for the win, and he struck out to advance to his first title match of the season.
Maccarone took home $8,000 for the victory, while Morton earned $4,500 for second. Eagle and Ozio took home $3,000 each for third and fourth. The PBA Senior Tour takes a three-week break before picking back up again for a five-week West Coast swing, starting with the 2007 PBA Senior Tucson Open at Golden Pin Lanes in Tucson, Ariz., June 9-13. The winner will take home $8,000.

Roth targets to end a five-year drought in PBA Senior Dayton Classic
At 56 years old and five years removed from his last Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour title, PBA Hall of Famer Mark Roth is still proving why he’s one of the greatest bowlers to ever play the game. Picture courtesy of PBA LLC.Roth, whose last PBA Senior Tour title came in the 2002 PBA Senior World Championship, earned the top seed for match play in the 2007 PBA Senior Dayton Classic, finishing the two days of qualifying as the overall leader with a 3,663 16-game pinfall.
As one of the top eight bowlers after qualifying, Roth will earn a bye into Tuesday's Round of 16, bypassing the Rounds of 32 and 24.
"That's huge. When I bowled out here before we didn't have that advantage and we had to bowl all day so this is very nice," Roth, who prior to this season had not bowled on the PBA Senior Tour since 2003, said. "They've made some changes to the format out here and, to me, that's a good change."
It took Roth a while to get going Tuesday, but when he did he was hard to stop. He started with games of 214, 224 and 187 before bouncing back with a 288 in game four and a 264 in game five. After games of 199 and 211, Roth finished with a 258 to hold on to the lead. "I like this oil. I actually used balls that weren't supposed to work on this pattern and tried to keep the ball straighter and keep my speed down," Roth said. "Speed is critical on this long oil pattern."
Dale Eagle (left, Tavares, Fla.), who ranks fourth all-time with 10 PBA Senior Tour titles, finished right behind Roth in second with 3,638. Mitchell Jacbczenski (Novi, Mich.) finished third with 3,613, George Miller III (Grand Rapids, Mich.) was fourth with 3,583 and PBA Hall of Famer David Ozio (Beaumont, Texas) rounded out the top five with 3,560.
Also earning byes into the Round of 16 were Sam Maccarone (Glassboro, N.J.), Jay Aono (Boise, Idaho) and Rohn Morton (right, Vancouver, Wash.). Morton edged out two-time defending PBA Senior Player of the Year Tom Baker for the final bye into the Round of 16, marking the second consecutive week Baker (King, N.C.) has finished ninth in qualifying.John Hunt (Grayling, Mich.) finished 32nd, just one pin ahead of Ted Staikoff (Black Hawk, S.D.) to earn the final spot in match play, which gets underway Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. ET.
Match play is best-of-five games until the format switches to best-of-three for the Round of 8, which gets underway at 6 p.m. The final four will bowl single-game matches immediately following, with the winner taking home $8,000.

Ozio slows down ball speed to lead PBA Senior Dayton Classic after Day One
As a fast-talking, hard-throwing Texas native, it's hard to get David Ozio to do anything slowly. The Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Hall of Famer was able to slow down his ball speed Sunday, however, to take the lead after the first day of qualifying in the 2007 PBA Senior Dayton Classic at Capri Bowling Lanes with a 1,856 eight-game pinfall and a 232.00 average.
Ozio started the day games of 193 and a 211 before making a ball change which resulted in games of 255 and 269. He stayed with the ball the remainder of the round, finishing with a 258 to take the overall lead.
"On this pattern you have to slow it down and hook it to get the extra pin carry and I really only had one game where I didn't have good pin carry," Ozio (Beaumont, Texas) said. "I like to throw the ball hard so it's hard for me to pull my speed back and get my roll rate up, but I managed to do that today."
Ozio captured the season-opening PBA Senior Manassas Open in Manassas, Va., for his second career PBA Senior Tour title three weeks ago. After bowling part-time his first three seasons on Tour, he's bowling full-time this season and looking to add a PBA Senior Player of the Year award to his 2004 PBA Senior Rookie of the Year hardware.
"I've been bowling well this whole segment but the issue is doing it in the right spots. I've been struggling the first two days lately and then bowling well the last day and it's been too late," Ozio said. "Today I struggled the first two games and then got it together so hopefully that pays off."
Sam Maccarone (Glassboro, N.J.) led the evening squad and finished the day second overall with 1,822.
PBA Hall of Famer Mark Roth (Fulton, N.Y.), who is bowling on the PBA Senior Tour for the first time since 2003 and looking for his first title since 2001, finish third with 1,818.
Mitch Jabczenski (Novi, Mich.) finished fourth with 1,817 while Gary Hiday (Indianapolis, Ind.) finished fifth with 1,785.
All 139 bowlers will return Monday for the second eight-game block after which the field will be cut to the top 32 for Tuesday's match play. The final two bowlers will square off for the $8,000 top prize Tuesday evening at Capri Bowling Lanes. The Round of 8 gets underway at 6 p.m. ET with the Round of 4 and Championship Round following immediately after.
