Farish, Rosprim lead qualifying at USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships

AMF Pin Palace Lanes in Huntsville, Ala. (May 21-22, 2007)

2007USBCICSFarishRosprim.jpg Daniel Farish of Lindenwood and Karen Rosprim of Fresno State easily earned the top seeds heading into match play at the 2007 United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Singles Championships on Monday.

Farish, a Junior Team USA member in 2006, finished the 12 games of qualifying with 2,597, an average of 216.4, to lead the men's field by more than 150 pins at AMF Pin Palace Lanes. Rosprim led the women by just over 200 pins, shooting 2,559, an average of 213.3.

The field of 15 men and 16 women represent some of the best collegiate bowlers in the country competing for individual national titles at the USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships.

Farish closed with games of 267 and 266 Monday to take the commanding lead. As one of the top four seeds, he earned a bye to the quarterfinals.

"Tomorrow is a totally different monster than today," Farish said. "It's head to head and anyone can win. Today was a long format and there's more room for error, but in match play you have to be on top of your game the whole time."

Rosprim, meanwhile, got off to a strong start to the day, opening with games of 222, 244, 209 and 230 to put some distance between herself and the rest of the field early.

"Starting off today in practice I had a good shot inside and outside, but I decided to go with the outside shot because that's what I prefer and it worked for me," Rosprim said. "It's anybody's game tomorrow. Today was just a day to get a feel for the lanes and see how the lanes transition. I definitely won't let it get to my head that I'm leading because tomorrow's a brand new day."

The 12 games of competition Monday determined seeding for the best-of-5, single-elimination match play competition beginning 8 a.m. Tuesday. The top four seeds in each division received byes to the third round of match play, while the No. 5 through No. 8 seeds received byes to the second round. The ninth seed on the men's side also receives a bye.

Qualifying for the USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships was held at the four Intercollegiate Bowling Championships Sectional Qualifier sites -- Allentown, Pa.; Chattanooga, Tenn.; Fairview Heights, Ill.; and Las Vegas -- on March 23. All participants bowled six games with total pinfall determining final standings. The top four finishers in each division (male and female) at each site advanced to the USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships.

The USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships is sponsored by Hammer Bowling and Kegel, the official lane maintenance provider for USBC.
