PBA Regional

It was Scott Santos' day; wins 2007 PBA Lake County Indiana Regional Players Championship

Stardust Bowl II in Merrillville, Ind. (May 26-28, 2007)

2007PRCScottSantos.jpg Things were so good for Scott Santos on Monday, even when he got stuck at the foul line and nearly fell, he still struck.

Santos defeated David Traber, 257-160, to win the 2007 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Lake County Indiana Regional Players Championship (RPC) at Stardust Bowl II, his fourth career PBA Regional Tour title and first Major.

"I guess when it's your day…" Santos said after the strike in the ninth frame which clinched the win. Indeed, everything seemed to go Santos' way all day, including a key ball change in the Round of 8.

Santos admittedly did not bowl well in his Round of 64 and Round of 32 wins in which he averaged just 200.28 but went 7-0. He dropped the first game of his best-of-three-games Round of 16 match before coming back to win the next two games and advance to the Round of 8. At that point, Santos decided he needed to make a ball change, which resulted in four consecutive games of 235 or better to take home the title.

"I did not bowl well at all those first couple rounds. I don't know if it was that the high end of the house was tighter, but the ball wasn't coming off my hand clean," Santos (Ledyard, Conn.) said. "I made my spares and stayed out of trouble those first couple matches and shot in the low 200s and it was just enough.

"For the Round of 8 I made the ball change and it opened the lane up and that really relaxed me. I was able to just let the ball off my hand. I made the right guess and that's what this game is all about."

After getting past Michael Norris in the best-of-three Round of 8 with wins of 236-169 and 235-156, Santos defeated Jason Lundquist 253-215 in the single-game semifinal match. He then took on the four-time Denny's PBA Tour titlist Traber in the title match, who was never able to get on track.

Traber never struck on the right line in the finals, while Santos struck with his first five shots. After Traber missed a single-pin conversion in the fifth frame, the match was Santos' to lose. Following back-to-back nine-spares in the sixth and seventh frames, he closed out the win with three consecutive strikes.

With the title, the 43-year-old Santos takes home $10,000 and a berth in the 2007-08 PBA Tournament of Champions, one of four Majors on the Denny's PBA Tour.

Queen targets to break the top-seed jinx in Regional Players Championship

2007PRCJasonQueen_small.jpg Usually earning the top seed for match play would be good news for a bowler, but the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Regional Players Championship has not been kind to top seeds lately.

Jason Queen will look to break the top-seed jinx Monday as he finished first after two rounds of qualifying in the 2007 PBA Lake County Indiana Regional Players Championship (RPC) at Stardust Bowl II.

The seven-time PBA Regional Tour champion finished the two rounds of qualifying with a 3,665 18-game pinfall to earn the top seed for Monday's single-elimination, best-of-seven-games Round of 64. He'll look to become the first top seed to win the RPC since Wes Malott won the inaugural event in 2002 as the No. 1 seed.

Jim Tomek Jr. came close last season, falling in the title match to D.J. Archer. The previous two seasons were unkind to top seeds, however, as both Mitch Beasley and Ken Abner lost in the Round of 64 in the No. 1 spot. PBA Hall of Famer Mark Williams lost in the Round of 8 in 2003.

"With all the pinfall wiped away tomorrow it's like a whole new tournament," Queen (Oreana, Ill.) said. "I like the head-to-head match play format but when you're the guy leading you'd rather have the pins carry over. I'll go in fresh tomorrow and attack it like I have been all week. I'm going to try and break the leaders' jinx. You have all the best regional bowlers from throughout the country here this week so it'll be a long day tomorrow."

Queen maintained his lead from Saturday by averaging 224.75 Sunday including a high game of 259.

"It seemed like it was more a grind today," Queen said. "The lanes played a lot differently. I had to use different equipment and had to play a little deeper. There was a lot more oil down lane and you didn't have as much room to the right."

Queen will face Dean Billings (Rootstown, Ohio), who finished 64th with 3,207, just one pin ahead of Michael Gaither (Grain Valley, Mo.). Chris Sand (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) finished second with 3,590 while Scott Santos (Ledyard, Conn.) finished third with 3,536.

Abner (Cincinnati), who fired the only 300 game of the tournament so far on Sunday, finished fourth with 3,524. Two-time Denny's PBA Tour titlist Lonnie Waliczek (Wichita, Kan.) rounded out the top five with 3,477.

Archer (Mineral Wells, Texas) will get the opportunity to successfully defend his title as he finished 26th with 3,290.

Match play begins Monday with the Round of 64 at 8 a.m. CT. The Round of 32 features best-of-five games at 12:30 p.m. followed by the best-of-three-games Round of 16 at 2:15 p.m. The best-of-three-games Round of 8 follows immediately after with the final four bowling single-game matches to determine the championship match.

The final two bowlers will roll off for the $10,000 top prize and a spot in the 2007-08 PBA Tournament of Champions Monday evening.

Queen leads after Day One Qualifying in 2007 PBA Lake County Indiana Regional Players Championship

2007PRCJasonQueen.jpg Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) veteran Jason Queen took the first step toward his first career PBA Regional Tour Major title Saturday, taking the lead after the first day of qualifying in the 2007 PBA Lake County Indiana Regional Players Championship at Stardust Bowl II in Merrillville, Ind. Picture PBA LLC.

Queen owns seven PBA Regional Tour titles, his last coming in 2005, but no Major regional titles. He used a high game of 268 in his second game to carry him to the overall lead with a 1,867 eight-game pinfall.

Queen was exempt on the Denny’s PBA Tour in 2004-05, but has not bowled full-time the last two years. He made a slight adjustment Saturday which helped him find a groove.

“I think the first game I was kind of fighting with my release and after a couple shots in the 10th I tried a different hand position and it came off my hand really well,” Queen (Oreana, Ill.) said. “I just focused on my release all day and it carried over and I just got in a rhythm.”

Queen took three weeks off from bowling a month out from this week’s event, but has been back practicing hard the last week and it’s paid off.

“I’ve been bowling pretty well and I’ve been happy with the way things have been going with working and bowling, and in the last six to eight months I have been really happy with my game,” Queen said. “I got matched up to the condition pretty early today and that got my swing pretty loose. Getting off to a good start in this format is definitely a confidence booster. You just have to try to get as many pins as you can.”

Chris Sand (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) finished second with 1,861 while Ken Abner (Cincinnati) was third with 1,829. Dale Albert (Kenton, Ohio) and Derek Sapp (Keokuk, Iowa) round out the top five.

Two bowlers who were exempt on the Denny’s PBA Tour last season and will look to regain their exemptions at next week’s Lake County Indiana Denny’s PBA Tour Trials at Stardust Bowl II finished in the top 10. Jason Hurd (Titusville, Fla.), owner of two Dennys PBA Tour titles, is eighth with 1,733, and is followed by 2003-04 PBA Rookie of the Year Chris Johnson (Garland, Texas) in ninth with 1,726.

Defending champion D.J. Archer (Grand Prairie, Texas), who captured his first career PBA title in winning Regional Players Championship, is 11th with 1,714.

All 244 competitors will bowl another eight games of qualifying on Sunday after which the field will be cut to the top 64 for Monday’s match play. The top two bowlers will roll off for the $10,000 top prize and a spot in the 2007-08 PBA Tournament of Champions Monday evening.
