Zadel beats Scott by one pin to win Jim Brewer Memorial
John edges Smith for the women's title
Summer came to the south coast resort of Poole for the 21st Annual Jim Brewer Tournament and so did 42 men and 16 ladies.
The six game qualifier went off with smooth precision and at its conclusion the top three men going through to the 2nd round were Mark Wells, John Zadel & Paul Evans Jr. For the ladies there was Sarah Purnell, Jemma Smith & Ann Smith.
The top 12 ladies and the top 32 men was the format for the second round of 4 games. At the end of this round the men’s 10 player round robin was headed by Jon Zadel, Mark Wells and Adam Scott.
The leading three ladies in their six-player round robin were Jemma Smith, Sarah Purnell and Lisa John. But it was Lisa John (pictured left with her trophies) that returned to welcome form, edging Jemma Smith by 23 pins for the title.
This was the day of the London Marathon but Poole had its own with it taking the men virtually four hours to bowl their nine games.
An unbelievable finish to the men’s event saw Jon Zadel (right) beat Adam Scott by one pin – thanks to Jon’s 243-174 win in the last match, while Adam lost 201-234 to Jon’s Team England colleague Mark A Smith. Paul Evans Jr. was third. This is the second runners-up spot for young Adam this season having led going into the last match.
