PBA Tour Trials
59-man roster for 2007-08 Denny's PBA Tour completed
Stardust Bowl II in Merrillville, Ind. (May 30 - June 3, 2007)
The list of exempt bowlers for the 2007-08 Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour is set after seven new names completed the 59-man roster following the 2007 Lake County Indiana Denny's PBA Tour Trials at Stardust Bowl II.
Todd Book (Cantonment, Fla.), left, who led four out of the five nine-game rounds bowled on the five different PBA oil patterns, led the way followed by Ronnie Russell (Indianapolis), right, Steve Harman (Camby, Ind.), Brian LeClair (Athens, N.Y.), Troy Wollenbecker (Toledo, Ohio), Chad Kloss (Greenfield, Wis.) and Steve Weber (Chalmette, La.).While Book cruised through the day with the lead and finished with a 10,063 45-game pinfall, Russell made the biggest jump, posting the day's highest score, 2,202 on the Cheetah oil pattern to finish with 10,044. Russell entered the final day ninth.
"This pattern is not even close to being my best pattern. I had a good ball reaction throwing an Ebonite RXS300," said Russell. "In this event you have to go out and get it. If you wait for people to catch you, they'll catch you. That was pretty obvious today. My score today was the most I've ever been over and to be honest it's surprising. As heavy as I roll, I'm sure some people probably counted me out today. I think wanting it so much probably got me there."
Harmon also posted one of the day's three perfect games, firing the 300 in his seventh game and finished with 10,027.
LeClair regained his exemption from the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour with a fourth-place finish and a total pinfall of 9,991. The veteran bowler, who has bowled in 356 Denny's PBA Tour events, finished 47th in the 2006-07 PBA World Point Rankings.
Also making a big jump Sunday was Wollenbecker who entered the day 11th before shooting the day's fourth-highest score, 2,137, to finish fifth with 9,973.
Kloss shot a 2,039 Sunday, his highest Round of the event, to finish sixth with 9,911.
The final and most dramatic exemption belonged to Weber, who edged out Randy Weiss (Columbia, S.C.) by just six pins. Weber, despite shooting 197 in his final score, averaged 254.50 over his final four games to finish with a total pinfall of 9,891.

Book leads PBA Tour Trials going into the final day
Even though he is only a day away from securing a coveted exemption on the Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour, Todd Book refuses to change his mentality in the 2007 Lake County Indiana Denny's PBA Tour Trials. The Cantonment, Fla., resident admitted to not paying attention to his score or the scores of others in the event that awards an exemption on the 2007-08 Denny's PBA Tour to the top seven finishers.
"I'll have the same mentality going into tomorrow. I'll take it one shot at a time, I don't watch the scoreboard and I don't watch other people's scores," said Book, who led the event for the third consecutive day. "I never look ahead and I never look behind. I just continue to stay focused and concentrate on the little things. If I make a bad shot, I pick up as many pins as I can and move ahead to the next frame."
While second-place Steve Harman (Camby, Ind.) closed the gap by 35 pins, Book still leads with an 8,116 36-game pinfall to Harman's 8,020. Book posted his lowest Round of the event's first four days with a nine-game pinfall of 1,914, 14th on the day.
Harman closed the gap with a ninth-place finish on the day with 1,949 on the Chameleon oil pattern, marking his lowest Round of the tournament. Each of the five days of competition is bowled on one of the five PBA oil patterns.
Trying to regain his exemption from the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour is Brian LeClair (Athens, N.Y.), who sits in third with 7,925, also marking his lowest round.
The biggest jump of the day came from Steven Elson (Wichita, Kan.) who entered the day 31st before firing the day's top round and his best Round of the event, 2,126, for a total score of 7,905 and fourth place.
Rounding out the top seven spots are Steve Weber (Chalmette, La.), Chad Kloss (Greenfield, Wis.) and David Beres (Waukesha, Wis.).
2006-07 exempt bowler Jason Hurd is one spot out off the cut line at 7,844, six pins behind Beres.
Liz Johnson, who is looking to become just the second female exempt bowler after Kelly Kulick accomplished the feat in last year's Tour Trials, is 10th with 7,839 while Kulick is 20th with 7,772.
The final nine games will take place on the Cheetah pattern Sunday beginning at 9 a.m. CST with the top seven based on 45-game pinfall earning the final seven of 59 exemptions for the 2007-08 Denny's PBA Tour.

Book continues to lead the 2007 Lake County Indiana Denny's PBA Tour Trials
With lots of big names and former exempt bowlers in the field, two bowlers without much previous Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) experience are quietly separating themselves from the pack.Todd Book (left) continued to lead the 2007 Lake County Indiana Denny's PBA Tour Trials with a 6,202 27-game pinfall while Steve Harman moved into second with 6,071 with just two days remaining in the fight for the final seven exemptions on the 2007-08 Denny's PBA Tour. Picture courtesy of PBA LLC.
Book and Harman (Camby, Ind.) have bowled a combined nine Denny's PBA Tour events in their careers, but are closing in on earning two of the 59 coveted full-time spots on next season's Tour.
Book held the lead for the second consecutive day, averaging 236.78 on the Scorpion pattern, the fourth-best score of the day. Harman, meanwhile, had his best day, averaging 233.67 on Friday after averaging 219.89 on Wednesday and 221.00 on Thursday. Each of the five days of competition is bowled on one of the five PBA oil patterns.
"It all comes down to adjustments. And I don't get emotional about things," Book (Cantonment, Fla.) said. "I'm not leaving splits and I'm not missing spares. When I'm out on the lanes I bowl one shot at a time. I don't get ahead and I don't look behind."
Making big moves to jump into or near the top seven Friday were two bowlers who were exempt in 2006-07. Brian LeClair (Athens, N.Y.) averaged 236.57 to move from 11th to third overall with 6,049. The 2003-04 PBA Rookie of the Year Chris Johnson (Garland, Texas) averaged 232.89 to move from 20th to eighth.
Edward VanDaniker Jr. (Essex, Md.), Randy Weiss (Columbia, S.C.), Ronnie Russell (Indianapolis) and David Beres (Waukesha, Wis.) are all in the top seven heading into the final two days of competition.
Liz Johnson averaged 223.89 Friday and sits ninth as she looks to become the second woman in history to earn a full-season exemption onto the Denny's PBA Tour. Last season, Kelly Kulick became the first by finishing sixth out of 140 bowlers. Kulick currently sits 27th with 5,816.
Saturday's nine-game block will take place on the Chameleon pattern starting at 9 a.m. CT. The final nine games will take place on the Cheetah pattern Sunday with the top seven based on 45-game pinfall earning the final seven of 59 exemptions for the 2007-08 Denny's PBA Tour.

Book overtakes the lead in Denny's PBA Tour Trials after Day Two on the Shark pattern
Sometimes being in the dark can be a good thing, as Todd Book proved Thursday.
Book, who had never seen the Shark oil pattern in competition prior to Thursday, averaged 217.56 over his nine games on the difficult pattern to take the lead after two days in the 2007 Lake County Indiana Denny’s PBA Tour Trials at Stardust Bowl II with a 4,071 18-game pinfall.
The trials, which offers seven exemptions for the 2007-08 Denny’s PBA Tour season, features a different PBA oil pattern each of the five days of competition. Bowlers get an hour of official practice on a pattern the night before it’s used, and Book took advantage of the time he was given.
“I had never seen the pattern before last night, in fact I hadn’t seen the pattern from Tuesday night either,” Book (Cantonment, Fla.) said of the Viper pattern used the first day which he averaged 234.78 on. “After the one-hour practice session last night I stayed an extra two hours and practiced on it some more.”
The 35-year-old Book just became a PBA member in 2006 and has bowled in five Denny’s PBA Tour events. His best career finish came recently in the 2007 Denny’s World Championship, where he finished 14th.
“The key out here is making your spares. I only missed two today and with this tournament the key is to get as many pins as you can,” Book said. “I’ve just been bowling non-stop lately, even after I’ve bowled 780 in league, I’ll stay an extra hour and only use my plastic ball and just work on spares. That’s the most important thing.”
Book never got into serious trouble Thursday with his lowest games in the 190s. He had a high game of 277 in the sixth game of the day, which helped him take another step toward his first career exemption.
Young gun Edward VanDaniker Jr. (Essex, Md.), a 21-year-old who finished third in the 2006-07 PBA Rookie of the Year voting, is second with 4,012. Steve Harman (Camby, Ind.) is third with 3,968 while Chris Collins (Fayetteville, N.C.) and Brian Waliczek (Birch Run, Mich.) are fourth and fifth, respectively.
Rounding out the top seven are former exempt bowler Rudy Kasimakis (Tupelo, Miss.) and Wednesday’s leader Ricky Jewell Jr. (Greenville, S.C.).
Knocking on the door are two women who have made history recently on the Denny’s PBA Tour. Liz Johnson (Cheektowaga, N.Y.), the first woman to make the finals of a Tour event, is ninth with 3,938. Kelly Kulick (Union, N.J.), who became the first woman to earn a full-season exemption at last year’s Tour Trials, is 12th with 3,918.
Friday’s nine-game block will take place on the Scorpion pattern starting at 9 a.m. CT, followed by nine games on Chameleon Saturday. The final nine games will take place on the Cheetah pattern Sunday with the top seven based on 45-game pinfall earning the final seven of 59 exemptions for the 2007-08 Denny’s PBA Tour.

Weiss, Jewell co-leaders after Day One in Denny's PBA Tour Trials
For two bowlers who haven't yet solved the trick of the Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour Trials, being cautiously optimistic is the best attitude after the first day in a long week. Picture courtesy of PBA LLC.Ricky Jewell Jr. and Randy Weiss (pictured) tied for the lead after the first of five days in the 2007 Lake County Indiana Denny's PBA Tour Trials Wednesday at Stardust Bowl II with 2,166 nine-game pinfall on the Viper oil pattern.
The five-day event in which competitors bowl nine games a day, each day on a different PBA oil pattern, is offering seven exemptions for the 2007-08 Denny's PBA Tour season.
Weiss (Columbia, S.C.) was exempt in 2005-06 after finishing first in the PBA South Region, while Jewell (Greenville, S.C.) has never earned an exemption. Neither has had great success in two previous tries in the event with Jewell finishing 23rd last season and 48th in 2005 while Weiss finished 46th last season and 15th in 2004.
"The lanes happened to be a little different (from practice) and fortunately I saw it really quickly and happened to pick the right ball," Weiss said. "It doesn't mean anything yet. It's nice to get out of the gate well but there's a whole lot of bowling yet. It doesn't mean anything."
Other than Weiss, the rest of the top seven are each looking for their first career exemptions. Todd Book (Cantonment, Fla.) is third, Brian Waliczek (Birch Run, Mich.) is fourth, Jason Sterner (Roswell, Ga.) is fifth and Ray Cyr Jr. (New Hartford, N.Y.) and Edward VanDaniker Jr. (Essex, Md.) are sixth and seventh, respectively.
Last year's biggest newsmaker, Kelly Kulick, is 19th after the first day after rolling a 1,975. Last season, Kulick became the first woman in history to earn a full-season exemption on the Denny's PBA Tour when she finished sixth to earn one of 10 exemptions.
Liz Johnson, who became the first female to make the finals of a PBA event in 2005, is 11th with 1,995.
Three bowlers who were exempt in 2006-07 are in the top 20. The 12-time Denny's PBA Tour titlist Del Ballard Jr. (N. Richland Hills, Texas), who finished 10th in last season's Tour Trials to earn the final exemption, is ninth with 2,006. Brian LeClair (Athens, N.Y.) is 12th with 1,994 while Chris Collins (Savannah, Ga.) is 15th with 1,984.
Two former Team USA members, Andrew Cain and P.J. Haggerty, as well as Brian Waliczek rolled a perfect game on the Viper pattern.
Just seven exemptions are available this season due to three exempt bowlers deferring their exemptions to 2007-08 due to injuries.
Thursday's nine-game block will take place on the Shark pattern and gets underway at 9 a.m. CT, followed by nine games on the Scorpion pattern Friday, nine games on Chameleon Saturday and the final nine games on the Cheetah pattern Sunday. The top seven based on 45-game pinfall will earn the final seven of 59 exemptions for the 2007-08 Denny's PBA Tour.
