2007 PBA Senior Tour #5
Packard comes back to defeat Chamberlain in PBA Senior Tucson Open final
In a match that looked like he might be done in early, Ross Packard battled back to defeat Bob Chamberlain, 190-168, to earn his second career Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour title in the 2007 PBA Senior Tucson Open. After leaving opens in two of his first frames, Packard responded with three consecutive strikes while Chamberlain battled opens in his third and fourth frames after striking in the first two.
Chamberlain doubled to put the pressure on Packard before leaving a third open in the seventh frame. Packard took advantage sandwiching a strike between two nine-spares.
With Packard watching, Chamberlain could have forced him to double in the 10th frame to win, but instead left a 10-pin to open in the ninth and a fifth open in the 10th to finish with 168 giving Packard the win.
"The three strikes helped out tremendously," said Packard (San Jose, Calif.). " I got off to a bad start, but luckily he wasn't able to jump out so far. I made a bad shot and then I missed a spare in the third and I paid for it. I got the three-bagger after that and was able to bounce back."
The win marked Packard's second career PBA Senior Tour Title after winning the 2005 PBA Senior Northern California Classic.
Packard, who entered match play on Wednesday seeded 18th, missing the 16th seed and a bye past the Round of 24 and ironically a possible Round of 8 match with Chamberlain by nine pins, used an 11-3 record to advance to the semifinals where he defeated amateur Terry Leong, 248-170. Packard's biggest win before the title came in the Round of 16 when he defeated second-seeded Kevin Croucher, three-games-to-one.
Chamberlain, the top seed in match play, swept Michael Henry (Brunswick, Ohio) in the Round of 16 before defeating PBA Hall of Famer Ernie Schlegel (Vancouver, Wash.), 2-1. David Ozio gave Chamberlain a major test in the semifinals before falling, 223-207.
Packard took home $8,000 for the victory, while Chamberlain earned $4,500 for second. Leong and Ozio took home $3,000 each for third and fourth.
The PBA Senior Tour heads to Las Vegas next for the first of two Majors of the season. The PBA Senior U.S. Open presented by Suncoast takes place June 17-22 at Suncoast Bowling Center. The winner will take home $20,000 and a birth into the 2008 PBA Tournament of Champions.

Chamberlain targets to end four-year drought in Tucson
Since being named Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Player of the Year in 2003, Bob Chamberlain has yet to win a title. His last and fourth career title came in that season, but if he continues to pull away from the field like he did Tuesday, Chamberlain may be adding a fifth.Chamberlain (The Villages, Fla.) began the day in third, 51 pins behind leader Henry Gonzalez. After eight additional games, Chamberlain accumulated a 16-game pinfall of 3,932, 77 pins ahead of second place Kevin Croucher.
"I'm doing the same thing and using the same equipment and I shot almost the same block. I always expect the lanes to hook more in the morning, but today they seemed to be pretty close to what they were like yesterday when we bowled," said Chamberlain, who like yesterday's leader Gonzalez partly credited a friendly bowling center to high scores. "I've always bowled well here. I went a long way in the Masters in 2003 (17th) and 2002 (seventh). The house has been good to me."
Chamberlain opened B squad action with games of 249 and 233 before stepping up with games of 257 and 289. He then averaged 236.00 over his final four games.
As one of the top eight bowlers after qualifying, Chamberlain earns a bye into Wednesday's Round of 16, bypassing the Rounds of 32 and 24.
Croucher (Grants Pass, Ore.), who was also in second after Monday's first day, led the A squad with 3,855.
In third is defending PBA Senior Tucson champion Tom Baker. Baker (King, N.C.) finished with 3,822 and is looking for his first title of the year after winning back-to-back PBA Senior Player of the Year awards.
The fourth seed entering match play is PBA Senior Tour points leader David Ozio (Beaumont, Texas). Ozio, who captured the season-opening PBA Senior Manassas Open, finished qualifying with 3,803.
Making the biggest jump in Tuesday action was amateur Tony Maresca (Mesa, Ariz.), posting the day's only plus-2,000 score with an eight-game 2,014 to finish fourth with 3,799.
Rohn Morton (Vancouver, Wash.) finished just one pin ahead of Mel Wolf (Jackson, Mich.) at 3,588 to earn the final spot in match play which begins at 9 a.m. PST.
Match play is best-of-five games until the format switches to best-of-three for the Round of 8, which gets underway at 6:30 p.m. The final four will bowl single-game matches immediately following, with the winner taking home $8,000.

Gonzalez averages over 250 to take the first-round lead in PBA Senior Tucson Open
A friendly bowling center can make for friendly scores. At least that's the case for Henry Gonzalez in the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tucson Open. Gonzalez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) sits atop the leaderboard after the first day of qualifying, posting an eight-game pinfall of 2,011, 45 pins ahead of second-place Kevin Croucher.
Gonzalez opened his block with a 276, dropping to 249 in his second game, before posting his high score of the day, 279. After a 260 in his fourth game, Gonzalez stayed below the 250 mark, finishing with a low score of 226.
"There is something to walking into a bowling center that you like to bowl in," said Gonzalez, who posted an average score of 251.38. "We're in Tucson and I love to bowl here. If you look at my track record, I've bowled fairly decent here. My ball always rolls well here and my mental game was really sharp today."
Gonzalez finished sixth in the 2006 PBA Senior Tucson Open and 17th in the 2005 event. Croucher (Grants Pass, Ore.) led the A squad in the day's first block with 1,966, including one of the day's two 300 games.
Four pins back in third is Bob Chamberlain (The Villages, Fla.) with 1,960. Chamberlain fired the day's other perfect game. Don Sylvia (Discovery Bay, Calif.) is fourth with 1,959. Defending PBA Senior Tucson champion Tom Baker (King, N.C.) is in seventh with 1,920.
All 118 bowlers return Tuesday for a second eight-game qualifying block, with B squad beginning action at 8 a.m. PST. The A squad will bowl their second block at 3 p.m. The field will then be cut to the top 32 based on total pinfall after Tuesday's action with match play beginning Wednesday at 9 a.m.
