2007 PBA Senior Tour #7

Schlegel ends four-year drought with win in PBA Senior Epicenter Classic

The Epicenter Bowling Complex, Klamath Falls, OR (June 24-27, 2007)

2007PBAS07ErnieSchlegel.jpg While he hadn't won a Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour title in the last four years, Ernie Schlegel had no qualms in beating the top seed from qualifying in the 2007 PBA Senior Epicenter Classic at The Epicenter Bowling Complex in Klamath Falls. Picture courtesy of PBA LLC.

In a battle of PBA Hall of Famers, Schlegel defeated top-seed David Ozio (Beaumont, Texas), 235-215, to claim his first PBA Senior Tour title since the 2003 PBA Senior Northern California Classic in Brentwood, Calif.

Schlegel refused to let Ozio in the match after the Texan left splits in the fifth and 10th frames.

"It always feels good to win. The cliché is true, winning never gets old," said Schlegel (Vancouver, Wash.). "The win is the only anything that matters. If you win ugly, who cares, the win is what counts. If you are able to pick up some splits and convert your spares, chances are you are going to do well."

Schlegel advanced to the finals after defeating the event's second seed, Henry Gonzalez (Colorado Springs, Colo.), 245-182.

Ozio knocked off Bob Brady (Santa Monica, Calif.), 258-231, in the semifinals to advance. Schlegel took home $8,000 for the victory, while Ozio earned $4,500 for second. Gonzalez and Brady took home $3,000 apiece for third and fourth.

The PBA Senior Tour heads to Brentwood, Calif., next for the PBA Senior Northern California Classic, July 1-4.

Ozio shoots high series to take the lead in PBA Senior Epicenter Classic

2007GPBT15DavidOzio_small.jpg After coming close to winning his second Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour title of the season in last week's PBA Senior U.S. Open presented by Suncoast, David Ozio has one goal, to win, in this week's PBA Senior Epicenter Classic.

Ozio, who won the season-opening PBA Senior Manassas Open for his second career PBA Senior Tour title, has put himself into a pretty good position to accomplish the goal after two days of qualifying in the event.

Ozio (Beaumont, Texas), who was second entering Tuesday's eight-game block, captured the top seed heading into Wednesday's match play with a 16-game pinfall of 3,808.

"You always want to win, nobody ever remembers the second best," said Ozio, who entered this week No. 1 in the PBA Senior Tour point rankings. "This week's oil pattern is very, very similar to last week's pattern. I am taking what I learned last week and applying it this week. It's actually a little easier for me this week than it was last."

Ozio posted the day's highest round with an eight-game block of 1,905. The Texan opened the round with a 288 and closed with games of 254 and 246.

As one of the top eight bowlers after qualifying, Ozio earns a bye into Wednesday's Round of 16, bypassing the Rounds of 32 and 24.

Monday's leader Henry Gonzalez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) is second, 127 pins behind Ozio, with 3,681. Gonzalez's eight-game pinfall fell almost two hundred pins from Monday's round, finishing with 1,785 after posting Monday's highest score of 1,923.

Bob Handley (Winter Park, Fla.) finished third with 3,677 after picking up 1,808 in Tuesday's round.

Defending PBA Senior Epicenter Classic champion Jim Brenner (LeClaire, Iowa) is 20th with 3,463.

Seventy-three year-old Teata Semiz (East Brunswick, N.J.) made the cut after posting a 290 in his final game to finish qualifying with 3,452.

Match play, which begins at 9 a.m. PST, is best-of-five games until the format switches to best-of-three for the Round of 8, which gets underway at 6 p.m. The final four will bowl single-game matches immediately following, with the winner taking home $8,000.

Gonzalez in familiar position at PBA Senior Epicenter Classic

2007PBAS05HenryGonzalez.jpg Two weeks ago in the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tucson Open, Henry Gonzalez was in the exact same position as he was after Monday’s first round of qualifying in the PBA Senior Epicenter Classic, leading the pack.

This time around, Gonzalez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) is hoping things will go differently for the remainder of the event. In the Tucson event, Gonzalez slipped to 11th in the second day of qualifying heading into match play. He rebounded with two match play wins before being upset by amateur and eventual third-place finisher Terry Leong in the Round of 8.

This week, Gonzalez posted an eight-game pinfall of 1,923 in Monday’s first qualifying round.

“I just kind of go with the flow when I bowl. I have great shots every now and then,” said Gonzalez, who owns two career PBA Senior Tour titles. “With 16 games of qualifying, it’s a long format and it’s a grind. It’s nice to finish in the top eight and get the bye in match play. I always try to get out of the gate early and it’s easy to here. I really like bowling in this center.”

Gonzalez opened the block with a high score of 279 and followed it up with 260. Gonzalez then averaged 230.67 over his final six games, closing the block with a 237.

David Ozio is in second after leading the morning’s A squad with 1,903. Ozio (Beaumont, Texas) narrowly edged Sam Zurich by two pins, posting consistent scores through the block, scoring 227 or higher in six of his eight games.

Zurich (Grant, Fla.), who won the third event of the season, the PBA Senior Northern Illinois Classic, finished the block with 1,901 after making a late charge at Ozio. Zurich closed out the block with scores of 269, 224 and 267 in his final three games.

Defending PBA Senior Epicenter Classic champion Jim Brenner (LeClaire, Iowa) is 51st with 1,639.

All 92 bowlers return Tuesday for a second eight-game qualifying block, with B squad beginning action at 9 a.m. PST. The A squad will bowl their second block at 4 p.m. The field will then be cut to the top 32 based on total pinfall after Tuesday’s action with match play beginning Wednesday at 9 a.m.
