2007 PBA Senior Tour #10
Patchen wins his first PBA Senior title in Iowa
Thunderbowl, Council Bluffs, IA (July 30-August 2, 2007)
Dave Patchen used a little karmic retribution Thursday to take home his first career PBA Senior Tour title. After throwing a perfect shot in the ninth frame and leaving a stone 9-pin when a strike would have given him the lead, Patchen watched as Henry Gonzalez left a 2-10 split and opened in the 10th frame needing only a mark to win, giving Patchen a 202-196 win in the title match of the 2007 PBA Senior Council Bluffs Open at Thunderbowl. The 53-year-old was moved to tears by winning his first title, which didn't come easy on Thursday. Picture courtesy of PBAPatchen needed a 279 in the final game of his best-of-three-games Round of 8 match to beat 10-time PBA Senior Tour titlist Dale Eagle, who came in on a three-match winning streak. He then had to double in the 10th frame against PBA Hall of Famer David Ozio in the semifinals to squeak by with a 245-242 win.
In the title match, it looked like Gonzalez might run away with his third PBA Senior Tour title when Patchen split and opened in the third frame, but Gonzalez was unable to capitalize, and Patchen was able to stay within five pins of Gonzalez until the ninth frame. After Gonzalez left the 3-6-10 and converted, Patchen had a chance to take the lead with a strike, but the 9-pin meant Gonzalez only needed a mark to win.
"That shot in the ninth frame was the best ball I threw all day and it just didn't go down," Patchen (Oregon, Ohio) said. "I told (roommate) Tim (Kauble) 'if it's meant to be, it's meant to be. If not, that's the way it is.' When he left that split it was just total shock. I was about ready to cry. I'm just so happy I get a banner."
Patchen credits his win against Ozio, in which he overcame a 7-10 split in the sixth frame, for giving him the confidence he needed in the title match.
"That match against Ozio was my toughest match. This is the fourth time I've bowled him this year and I always bowl well against him but he always seems to get me," Patchen, who used a Roto Grip Mystic the entire tournament, said. "I figured if I could get past him I'd have a chance.
"I was really nervous against Ozio but I wasn't nervous in the championship. I felt really comfortable. I guess I figured if I left a 7-10 split (Gonzalez) could leave one too, but I really didn't think he'd leave that split. My heart is still pounding. This is one of the best days of my life."
Patchen earned $8,000 for the win, while Gonzalez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) took home $4,500. Ozio (Beaumont, Texas) and Jerry Swank (Chouteau, Okla.), who Gonzalez beat, 230-213, earned $3,000 each for third and fourth, respectively.
The PBA Senior Tour heads to Hammond, Ind., next week for the 2007 PBA Lake County Open, Aug. 6-9 at Olympia Lanes. The winner will take home $8,000.

Diaz moves to the top in PBA Senior Council Bluffs Open
In an already competitive Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Rookie of the Year race, Mike Dias is looking to make the race just a little more crowded. The 50-year-old competing in his first season on the PBA Senior Tour earned the top seed for match play in the 2007 PBA Senior Council Bluffs Open, leading the field with a 3,746 16-game pinfall Wednesday at Thunderbowl.
Dias is looking to follow in the footsteps of fellow rookies Sam Zurich and Sam Maccarone, who have already won titles this season. Another rookie, Kerry Painter, sits 13th in the PBA Senior Point Rankings, while PBA Hall of Famer Steve Cook made two championship round appearances early in the season, though he has been slowed by injuries as of late.
Dias, who has made one match play appearance this season, came out slow Wednesday with a 181 in the first game but recovered quickly to average 244.75 over the next four games, including a 268 in game four. After a 191 in game six, he bounced back to finish the round with games of 212 and 247 to take over the lead and earn one of eight byes into the Round of 16.
“I just got a great ball reaction and only had to throw one ball all day yesterday and that makes adjusting a lot simpler,” Dias (Lafayette, Colo.) said. “I did make some equipment adjustments today and used a different ball for the high end of the house which worked out well. I’m feeling pretty confident right now.”
Dias finished just ahead of three-time PBA Senior Tour champion Vince Mazzanti Jr. (Levittown, Pa.), who fired a 277 in his final game to move into second with 3,728. Mazzanti is followed by Barry Gurney (West Hills, Calif.), a four-time champion who is looking for his first title since 1999. Gurney, who led the morning squad, would become the second oldest PBA Senior Tour champion at the age of 66.
“I’ve been struggling the last five weeks and my good friend Eric Forkel suggested I lay out a ball that give me more length and he was right,” Gurney said of the five-time Denny’s PBA Tour champion. “He prescribed the right antidote and it’s seemed to work so far. Having the right equipment is so important because there are so many good players out here. If you don’t have the right equipment in your hand things can get bad.”
Also earning a bye was PBA Hall of Famer Gary Dickinson (Edmond, Okla.), who finished sixth with 3,668. Dickinson is looking for his 13th career PBA Senior Tour title which would put him one shy of all-time leader John Handegard.
Tuesday’s leader Jimmy Johnson (Bellevue, Neb.) struggled Wednesday and nearly missed the cut, but held on to 32nd with 3,453. He earned the final spot in match play by just three pins over last year’s Rookie of the Year, Bob Kelly (Dayton, Ohio).
Match play gets underway Thursday at 9 a.m. CST. The final two bowlers will square off for the $8,000 top prize Thursday evening at Thunderbowl at 6 p.m.

Johnson leads after Day One in PBA Senior Council Bluffs Open
It took a lot of convincing from a lot of different parties for Jimmy Johnson to compete in his first career Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour event this week, but so far it's looking like he made the right decision.Bowling with a brace covering his entire left arm following recent surgery, Johnson led the field after the first day of qualifying with a 1,938 eight-game pinfall in the 2007 PBA Senior Council Bluffs Open at Thunderbowl.
Just a month ago, Johnson tore a tendon in his left arm while water skiing which required surgery to reattach the tendon. Prior to bowling Tuesday, he had his cast removed and replaced with the brace. He was unable to pick up the ball with both hands, but was mostly unaffected by the inability to use his left arm.
"The toughest thing is not being able to pick the ball up with both hands. I have to get my grip on the ball return and then lift it up with one hand," Johnson (Bellevue, Neb.) said. "A lot of people questioned whether balance would be a factor but that hasn't been as much of a problem as I thought it would be."
Johnson started his day with a 213 before averaging 256 over the next four games. He had his lowest game of the day in game six with a 187 but rebounded with a 288 in game seven. Johnson needed a 225 in the final game to pass the first squad leader, Vince Mazzanti Jr. A strike on his fill ball gave him 226 and the one-pin lead.
The 52-year-old is no stranger to success at Thunderbowl as he captured his only PBA title in a PBA Regional Tour even in 2005 at the center. He credits the encouragement of Denny's PBA Tour champion Rick Steelsmith, part-owner of Thunderbowl Ted Baer and Johnson's fiancé, Brenda Stevens who is the manager of Thunderbowl, for convincing him to compete.
"I bowled in the regional here this weekend and missed the cash by 12 pins. I hadn't planned on bowling this event unless I cashed in the regional but the people who believed in me talked me into it," Johnson said. "It's easy to doubt yourself if you're not having a lot of success but it's neat when you have people believing in you and it tells me that I should believe in myself, too."
Mazzanti (Levittown, Pa.), who is looking to bounce back after two difficult years since breaking a toe, had a consistent day Tuesday. He fired five games in the 240s with a high game of 279 in game seven to finish with 1,937. The three-time PBA Senior Tour champion is looking for his first title since the 2005 USBC Senior Masters.
Mike Dias (Lafayette, Colo.) is just one pin behind Mazzanti in third with 1,936, while Tom Cater (Rockford, Ill.), who fired one of two perfect games on the day, is fourth with 1,914.
The field of 93 will bowl another eight-game block Wednesday after which the field will be cut to the top 32 bowlers for Thursday's match play. The final two bowlers will square off for the $8,000 top prize Thursday evening at Thunderbowl at 6 p.m. CST.
