2007 PBA Senior Tour #11
Sylvia denies LeClair's bid for his first career PBA Senior Tour title
Olympia Lanes, Hammond, IN (August 6-9, 2007)
Don Sylvia waited a long time for his second Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour title, but it was well worth the wait. Sylvia captured his first title since his rookie season in 2003, defeating Roger LeClair, 226-211, in the title match of the 2007 PBA Senior Lake County Open Thursday at Olympia Lanes. Pictures courtesy of PBA LLC. The 2003 PBA Senior Rookie of the Year qualified 21st after 16 games and had to bowl five matches to get the title match while LeClair, who qualified third, had to win just three.
The day, like the four years since his last title, wasn't easy for Sylvia, who after sweeping his best-of-five Round of 32 match, three-games-to-none, had to come from behind in his next two matches to win. He fell in an 0-2 hole to No. 12 Mark Jones in the Round of 24 before bouncing back to win the final three games, then lost the first game to No. 5 Michael Henry in the Round of 16 before winning three in a row again.
Sylvia had an easier time in the best-of-three Round of 8, sweeping Bob Chamberlain, 2-0, then knocked off his roommate Henry Gonzalez, 210-192, in the one-game semi-final to reach the title match.
The 54-year-old jumped out to an early lead against LeClair (right), who opened in the second, but Sylvia opened in the fourth to give LeClair the lead. Sylvia responded with five consecutive strikes, while LeClair was burned by a ringing 10-pin in the eighth frame after a double. The Discovery Bay, Calif., resident wrapped up the title with a nine-spare in the 10th frame."I've been waiting so long for this," Sylvia said. "The first title is always great. I came out my rookie year and was very fortunate to win, but believe me the second one is much tougher. The second one proves I really do belong out here. This is just a taste of honey."
Sylvia, who dedicated the win to his late father who passed away two years ago, took home $8,000 for the win.
The win was particularly painful for LeClair (Clackamas, Ore.), who again came up just short in his quest for his first career PBA Senior Tour title. The 2005 PBA Senior Rookie of the Year runner-up to PBA Hall of Famer Tom Baker, LeClair also finished second at Olympia Lanes two years ago.
LeClair took home $4,500 for second, while Gonzalez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Gary Smith (E. Peoria, Ill.) took home $3,000 for third and fourth.
The PBA Senior Tour heads to Decatur, Ill., next week for the 2007 PBA Senior Decatur Open, Aug. 11-14 at Spare Time Lanes. The winner will take home $8,000.

Baker and Ozio are on collision course
Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Hall of Famers Tom Baker (left) and David Ozio (right) are running neck and neck in the 2007 PBA Senior Player of the Year race with just three events remaining. Now, they're on a collision course to meet in the title match of this week's PBA Senior Lake County Open.Baker earned the top seed for match play while Ozio finished second and the two will head to opposite sides of Thursday's single elimination bracket where they could meet for the title, a match that could either seal the award's outcome or cloud the picture even further.
The two-time defending PBA Senior Player of the Year, Baker got off to a slow start this season but has rebounded with wins in his last two events, including the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Senior Masters, one of the season's two Majors.
Ozio, meanwhile, leads the Tour in points and championship round appearances (six), and owns one title. He has also fared well in Majors, taking second in the PBA Senior U.S. Open.
A win by Baker could wrap up his record third consecutive Player of the Year award, but a win by Ozio would make a good case for his first such honor.
"I have had (the Player of the Year) on my mind lately. It was a setback for Tom to win two in a row and now I think I have to win and stay ahead in all the (statistical) categories," Ozio (Beaumont, Texas) said. "It's a challenge to go head-to-head with him. You can't cut him an inch worth of slack. He is a world class player."
Ozio had a chance to pull even in the win column with Baker in last week's PBA Senior Council Bluffs Open, a tournament Baker did not compete in, but the Texan fell to eventual champion Dave Patchen in the semifinals.
"I had a good chance to win last week and just got stopped against the wall," Ozio said. "It was a tough one to take but it's a new week. We'll see what happens."
After struggling early in the first Round of qualifying Tuesday, Ozio came on strong late in the day then continued his surge Wednesday, finishing the day with games of 266, 256 and 256.
"I finally got the look of the lanes and was able to repeat the motion really well. Overall I was really happy with myself. I just wanted to secure one of the top eight spots. It's a confidence builder to get one," Ozio said, referring to the two byes the top eight receive into the Round of 16. "I got off to such a bad start yesterday because the lanes changed so drastically. I just kept trying different things until it all started to come into view."
Baker, meanwhile, used a 257 in his second game Wednesday and a 278 in game six to take the overall lead.
"I was hitting the pocket a lot but my carry was bad," Baker (King, N.C.) said. "On certain pairs it picked up at the right spot and carried better so tomorrow I need to be careful about that. If I leave a lot of 10-pins I'll be going home for sure."
Ironically, Baker and Ozio met in the Round of 8 last year at Olympia Lanes. In a high scoring best-of-five match, Ozio knocked Baker off, 3-1, averaging 273 including a 300 in game three. Ozio ended up falling in the semifinals to eventual champion Jimmy Young.
"We're actually pretty good friends," Baker said of Ozio. "He's going to win some and I'm going to win some. It's just you and the pins though when you're on the lanes. It's going to go right down to it here the last couple weeks. It's going to be pretty interesting."
Match play gets underway Thursday at 10 a.m. CST with the Round of 32. The top eight receive byes until the Round of 16 which gets underway at 3 p.m. The final two bowlers will square off for the $8,000 top prize Thursday evening at Olympia Lanes at 7 p.m.

LeClair takes the lead in PBA Senior Lake County Open
Roger LeClair's return to the site of his best career Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour finish is off to another good start. Still searching for his first career PBA Senior Tour title, LeClair took the lead Tuesday after the first day of qualifying with a 1,783 eight-game pinfall in the 2007 PBA Senior Lake County Open at Olympia Lanes, a special place for the Clackamas, Ore., resident.
Two seasons ago in his rookie campaign, LeClair finished second to Gene Vincent at Olympia Lanes. LeClair, who ended up second in the PBA Senior Rookie of the Year voting to PBA Hall of Famer Tom Baker that season, has since posted several top-five finishes on the Tour but has never been able to get over the hump. Last season, he endured a stretch of three consecutive fifth-place finishes to start the season.
On Tuesday, LeClair didn't get off to a good start, shooting just 179 in game one. He bounced back with a 246 before dipping down below 200 again with a 194. A ball change in game four, however, resulted in a 244 average over the next four games on a day when the scoring pace was low.
"I went through three different balls in the first game. I was fortunate enough to shoot in the 240s the second game, but in game three the ball started going longer and longer so I switched to a Brunswick Blast Zone and it picked up a little earlier. I was able to have a nice run of games," LeClair said. "I had good breaks and great carry. The last game I shot 188 but it could have been 150. I was fortunate to be clean and make my spares. Out here it really comes down to making spares."
Tim Kauble (Marion, Ohio) is second with 1,774 while Baker (King, N.C.) is third with 1,768. Baker is looking for his third consecutive win which would tie the PBA Senior Tour record he set last season. After a slow start to the season, Baker has come on strong of late, winning the PBA Senior Northern California Classic and the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Senior Masters in consecutive weeks in July, the latter of which was his record fourth Major title in three seasons. He did not bowl in last week's PBA Senior Council Bluffs Open.
Two-time PBA Senior Tour champion and last week's runner-up Henry Gonzalez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) is fourth with 1,763. Ron Garr (Ridgedale, Mo.) rounds out the top five with 1,749.
The field of 135 will bowl another eight-game block Wednesday after which the field will be cut to the top 32 bowlers for Thursday's match play. The final two bowlers will square off for the $8,000 top prize Thursday evening at Olympia Lanes at 7 p.m. CST.
