2007 PBA Senior Tour #12

Croucher wins his first PBA Senior title in a roll-off

Spare Time Lanes, Decatur, IL (August 11-14, 2007)

2007PBAS12KevinCroucher.jpg It took two extra frames, but Kevin Croucher finally came away with his first career Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour title. Croucher won a sudden death roll-off, 20-18, over Gary Smith after the two tied at 227 through 10 frames Tuesday to win the 2007 PBA Senior Decatur Open at Spare Time Lanes. Picture courtesy of PBA LLC.

2007PBAS12GarySmith_small.jpg Smith (right) came into the match on fire, averaging 279.67 in his previous three games in the Round of 8 and Round of 4, but he cooled off enough for Croucher to pull even with him with three clutch strikes in the 10th frame.

Croucher then started the one-ball, sudden death roll-off with a strike, which Smith matched. On the second ball, Croucher struck again while Smith left the 6- and 10-pins, giving Croucher the win.

"I've played a lot of sports my whole life and they all pertain to staying calm," Croucher said. "After a while you get used to it and that's the fun part. The fun part is having to throw shots in that situation and perform under pressure. That's when you find out how good you are."

Croucher was good enough to knock off Smith, who swept his best-of-three match in the Round of 8 with wins of 276-243 and 279-210 over Keith Sharp (Orlando, Fla.).

Smith then overcame PBA Hall of Famer David Ozio (Beaumont, Texas) in a semifinal shootout in which both bowlers struck with their first nine shots and seemed destined for the first 300-300 tie in PBA Senior Tour history. Ozio left a 10-pin with his first shot in the 10th, however, and Smith struck once in the 10th for the win.

Croucher, meanwhile, had to overcome Bob Kelly (Dayton, Ohio) in the Round of 8, winning the final two games for a 2-1 win. It was a small measure of revenge for Croucher, who was edged in the 2006 PBA Senior Rookie of the Year voting by Kelly last season.

After knocking off 10-time PBA Senior Tour titlist Dale Eagle in the semifinals, 231-180, Croucher took the lead early in the title match, until back-to-back spares in the fifth and sixth frames. Smith, meanwhile, struck four consecutive times to take the lead and looked like he might cruise to his first career PBA Senior Tour title.

Smith (E. Peoria, Ill.) needed a strike with is first ball in the 10th to shut Croucher out, but a nine-spare gave the Grants Pass, Ore., resident an opening. He took it by striking all three times in the 10th to send the match to a roll-off.

"I made one bad shot in the match but then he gave me a window. You look forward to getting that window out here but when it comes up you have to remain calm," Croucher said. "I wasn't thinking about anything other than making a good shot. Once we tied I knew I could start on the lane I finished on. I threw it a little light but luckily it carried."

Croucher earned $8,000 for the win while Smith took home $4,500 for second. Ozio and Eagle earned $3,000 each for third and fourth.

Next week the PBA Senior Tour wraps up with the PBA Senior Dick Weber Invitational, Aug. 17-21 at West County Lanes in Ballwin, Mo. The winner will take home $9,000 and a berth in the 2008 H&R Block Tournament of Champions, one of four Majors on the Denny's PBA Tour.

Mazzanti leads top 32 into match play portion of the PBA Senior Decatur Open

2007PBAS12VinceMazzanti.jpg Chewing on some low fat sesame crackers he bought at a health food store earlier in the day, Vince Mazzanti Jr. reminisced about the days of eating steak and pizza. While he misses his favorite foods, the results he's seeing in his bowling from a change in his lifestyle have been well worth the deprivation. Picture courtesy of PBA LLC.

The new Mazzanti, who is 25 pounds lighter, earned the top seed for qualifying in the 2007 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Decatur Open at Spare Time Lanes with a 3,846 16-game pinfall.

Mazzanti has been rooming with fellow PBA Senior Tour bowler Frank Fiscello (Bloomfield, N.J.), who is the subject of a special television show, "You: Staying Young," based on the book co-authored by Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Michael Roizen. The show, which is being produced by Discovery Studios, will air later this year on Discovery Health.

Fiscello has lost over 40 pounds on a three-month program which includes a healthy diet and regular exercise. Mazzanti has joined Fiscello on the program and has lost 25 pounds. The change has showed up in Mazzanti's game as he's made match play in the last three events after a stretch where he did not make the cut in four of five events.

"This swing, things are really feeling better. Frank and I have been eating better and exercising and I feel a lot stronger. When there are two people doing it, it helps a lot. We're pushing each other," Mazzanti (Levittown, Pa.) said. "I haven't had the good stuff in a long time but it's been worth it. If that's what it takes to get to the top then I'm all in."

The three-time PBA Senior Tour titlist and 2002 PBA Senior Rookie of the Year is looking for his first title since the 2005 United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Senior Masters. He outpaced a high-scoring field, averaging 249.88 on Monday, including games of 280 and 278.

"I didn't know I was going to score so high, I just got it going. I knew I needed a lot of strikes so I drilled a new ball and got a good reaction," Mazzanti said. "It's good to have the byes but a lot of guys are striking so you have to come back with it tomorrow and get a good reaction."

Mazzanti earned one of eight byes into Tuesday's Round of 16. He'll look to improve on his performance two weeks ago in the PBA Senior Council Bluffs Open where he earned the No. 2 seed for match play but fell in the Round of 16, three-games-to-two, to Dale Eagle.

Jim Knoblauch (Waukesha, Wis.) finished second behind Mazzanti with 3,764 while Roger Kossert (Lithia, Fla.) was third with 3,749.

Finishing back-to-back for the second consecutive week were the two leading candidates for 2007 PBA Senior Player of the Year. PBA Hall of Famers David Ozio (Beaumont, Texas) and Tom Baker (King, N.C.) finished fourth and fifth, respectively with 3,746 and 3,708. Last week, Baker led qualifying while Ozio was second, which could have produced a title match of epic proportions, but both lost in match play.

Baker, the two-time defending PBA Senior Player of the Year has a Tour-best two titles including a Major victory, while Ozio has one title, is leading the Senior Point Rankings and has a Tour-leading six championship round appearances.

Rounding out the players earning byes were Kenny Parks (East Chicago, Ind.) in sixth, Kevin Croucher (Grants Pass, Ore.) in seventh and Dale Traber (Cedarburg, Wis.) in eighth.

The top 32 advanced to match play which gets underway Tuesday at 9 a.m. CST with qualifiers 17-32 bowling each other. The final two bowlers will square off for the $8,000 top prize Tuesday evening at Spare Time Lanes at 6 p.m.

Smith paces the field at PBA Senior Decatur Open

2007PBAS12GarySmith_small.jpg Gary Smith has been lucky enough to get some time away from his full-time job to bowl on the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour lately, and so far he's making the most of his opportunity. Picture courtesy of PBA LLC.

Smith finished Sunday's first Round of qualifying in the 2007 PBA Senior Decatur Open at Spare Time Lanes with a 1,962 eight-game pinfall to take the lead heading into Monday's final Round of qualifying.

The 53-year-old works full time as a casino supervisor at Paradise Riverboat Casino in Peoria, Ill., but has been able to get some time off the last couple weeks and has put up some impressive performances. He finished 12th in the 2007 PBA Senior Council Bluffs Open two weeks ago, then fell in the semifinals of last week's PBA Senior Lake County Open to eventual runner-up Roger LeClair.

The last three weeks have been a vast improvement over his only other appearance on the PBA Senior Tour this summer when he finished 117th in the PBA Senior U.S. Open.

"I bowled really badly at the U.S. Open," Smith (East Peoria, Ill.) said. "I have had really great ball reaction the last couple weeks. Every ball I get off the truck just works perfectly."

Smith, who is searching for his first career PBA Senior Tour title, shot five games of 246 or better Sunday. He got off to a strong start with a 255 in game one and after his low game of the round in game two – a 219 – he rebounded to average 256.75 over the next four games to put distance between himself and the rest of the field. He finished with games of 237 and 224.

"I'd love to win one," Smith said. "I enjoy bowling out here and it's always better when you bowl better, but I thoroughly enjoy bowling out here. The competition is fun and if I could do it more I would."

Right behind Smith in second is Jim Knoblauch (Waukesha, Wis.) with 1,958 while Kenny Parks (East Chicago, Ind.) is third with 1,950. PBA Hall of Famer David Ozio (Beaumont, Texas), who is battling it out with fellow PBA Hall of Famer Tom Baker for PBA Senior Player of the Year honors, is fourth with 1,941.

Last week's PBA Senior Lake County Open champion Don Sylvia (Discovery Bay, Calif.) continued his recent streak of hot bowling and sits eighth with 1,884.

The top eight bowlers after Monday's second eight-game block receive byes into Tuesday's Round of 16.

The field of 106 will bowl another eight-game block Monday after which the field will be cut to the top 32 bowlers for Tuesday's match play. The final two bowlers will square off for the $8,000 top prize Tuesday evening at Spare Time Lanes at 6 p.m. CST.
