2007 PBA Senior Tour #13
Baker practically seals his third consecutive PBA Senior Player of the Year award with victory against Ozio in season showdown
West County Lanes, Ballwin, MO (August 17-21, 2007)
It was only fitting the 2007 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour season came down to a match-up between PBA Hall of Famers Tom Baker and David Ozio. After running neck and neck throughout the course of the season, the friends and rivals met in the title match of the season-ending PBA Senior Dick Weber Invitational, with the PBA Senior Player of the Year award hanging in the balance.
After months of taking turns as the front-runner for the award, it was Baker (pictured left) who once again came out on top, possibly securing a record third consecutive PBA Senior Player of the Year award with a 256-213 win over Ozio in a match that was much closer than the final score indicated. While Baker came into the event with two titles to Ozio’s one victory in 2007, Ozio (right) may have held the slight edge over Baker, leading the PBA Senior Point Rankings and advancing to the championship round in seven of 12 events coming in. But Baker earned the top seed for match play Sunday, then compiled a 16-8 record in match play – including a 7-1 record in the final eight games Tuesday morning – to earn the top seed for the stepladder finals.
Ozio settled for the No. 4 seed, then worked his way up the ladder by knocking off No. 5 seed Bob Brady, 237-211, No. 3 seed Keith Sharp, 235-169, and No. 2 seed Hugh Miller, 201-175. He looked destined to charge past Baker for his first career PBA Senior Player of the Year award.
With the momentum on his side, Ozio started the title match with a nine-spare, then rattled off three consecutive strikes while Baker left three consecutive 10-pins in the second, third and fourth frames, and it looked like Ozio might run away with the match.
The tide quickly turned, however, as Ozio struggled over the next four frames with an eight-spare and three consecutive nine spares. Baker made a quick adjustment which led to seven consecutive strikes. In mere minutes, the match – and perhaps the end-of-the-year hardware – had gone to Baker.
“He bowled great all year,” Baker said of Ozio. “When it comes down to the matches between us it’s just a matter of who carries. I made a little move after I left those 10-pins. I got a break on a strike in the fifth frame where I wanted the shot to be lighter and it was a little too light so I just said at that point I have to make a move.
“Sometimes you have to take a risk and I forced myself to do it and it paid off.”
The win was Baker’s eighth PBA Senior Tour title in just three seasons, putting him into a tie for seventh on the all-time list. Should the voting sway his way, he would become the first bowler in history to win three consecutive PBA Senior Player of the Year awards.
“It would be awesome,” Baker (King, N.C.) said. “David has been pushing me all year. To do it three times in a row really would say something.” Baker earned $9,000 for the win, while Ozio (Beaumont, Texas) took home $5,000 for his third runner-up finish of the season.
The inaugural PBA Senior Dick Weber Invitational also awarded a spot in the 2008 H&R Block Tournament of Champions, one of four Majors on the Denny’s PBA Tour, but Baker was already eligible due to his 2007 USBC Senior Masters win earlier in the summer. The spot will now go to a past Denny’s PBA Tour champion.

Miller moves to the top after the second round of Round Robin Match Play in PBA Senior Dick Weber Invitational
As late as last Wednesday, Hugh Miller had no intentions of bowling this week's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Dick Weber Invitational. But after watching his friend and fellow Northwest native Kevin Croucher win last week's PBA Senior Decatur Open, Miller quickly changed his mind. Picture courtesy of PBA LLC.His decision was a good one as Miller leads the final event of the 2007 PBA Senior Tour season heading into the final Round of match play, going 10-6 Monday to finish with a 7,138 32-game pinfall at West County Lanes.
All pinfall from the 16 games of qualifying carried over, where Miller had finished fifth. He moved into the lead by posting the second-best record of the day in round robin match play. Bowlers receive 30 bonus pins for each win and 15 for each tie.
The PBA Senior Tour rookie, who won seven titles in his career on the Denny's PBA Tour, bowled six events early in the season and made match play three times but grew frustrated with the single-elimination format used in standard events. This week's event, which is being held in honor of the late PBA legend Dick Weber (pictured right), features a throwback round robin format, which Miller prefers."I've had the same problem out here I had on the (Denny's PBA) Tour my last couple of years out there where every time I get to match play my opponents just blew me out," Miller (Seattle) said. "The secret here is the round robin format. I get to play until the last game no matter what."
Miller finished just one pin ahead of Keith Sharp, who after some deliberation continued to bowl despite the loss of his father Saturday night. Sharp (Orlando, Fla.) matched Miller with a 10-6 record in match play, finishing with 7,137. Sharp is looking for his first career PBA Senior Tour title.
As they seem to do every week, PBA Hall of Famers Tom Baker (l.) and David Ozio (r.) finished next to each other in the standings, with Baker finishing third with 7,087 after going 9-7 and Ozio finishing fourth with 7,051, posting the best record of the day at 11-5. Baker and Ozio are in a heated battle for PBA Senior Player of the Year honors, with this week potentially being the deciding factor in the vote.Baker (King, N.C.), the two-time defending PBA Senior Player of the Year, owns two titles this season including one Major, while Ozio (Beaumont, Texas) leads the PBA Senior Point Rankings and is looking to make his eighth championship round appearance in 13 events.
Another PBA Senior Tour rookie, Sam Maccarone (Glassboro, N.J.), sits fifth with 6,946 after posting a 10-6 record. Maccarone, who won a title earlier this season in Dayton, Ohio, moved up five spots after finishing qualifying in 10th.
All 24 finalists will bowl another eight games of round robin Tuesday morning after which the top five will advance to the stepladder finals which get underway Tuesday at 6 p.m. CST. The winner will take home $9,000 and a berth in the 2008 H&R Block Tournament of Champions, one of four Majors on the Denny's PBA Tour.

Baker earns No. 1 seed for round robin match play at PBA Senior Dick Weber Invitational
Tom Baker (left) remembers fondly the days when he used to run home to catch the latest Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) telecast on ABC hoping Dick Weber (right) made the finals. Now, Baker is in position to honor is boyhood idol, holding the overall lead heading into match play with a 3,506 16-game pinfall in the 2007 PBA Senior Dick Weber Invitational, a new PBA Senior Tour event honoring the late PBA legend.
The top seed means much more in this event than in most PBA Senior Tour events. This week features round robin match play, where all pins from qualifying carry over. Baker is looking to win his third PBA Senior Tour title this season, which could lead to a record third consecutive PBA Senior Player of the Year award for the PBA Hall of Famer.
On Sunday, Baker stayed steady on a difficult lane condition, which forced him to be more conservative. He kept all eight games above 200, with a high of 245 and a low of 212.
"Today was a lot different. Yesterday I played inside and today I was going as straight as I could and taking my hand out of the ball. I didn’t have to move much the whole day," Baker (King, N.C.) said.
This week’s event is using the PBA World Championship pattern, the same pattern Baker won the 2004 PBA World Championship on, giving him a five-season Denny’s PBA Tour exemption.
"Normally this pattern plays in and I thought outside would be out of bounds, but because of the surface it’s playing a lot different."
Looming just two spots behind Baker is PBA Hall of Famer David Ozio (left), who is third with 3,429. Ozio (Beaumont, Texas) is running neck-and-neck with Baker for Player of the Year honors. Though he has just one title this season to Baker’s two, Ozio has been the most consistent bowler on Tour, making seven championship round appearances in 12 events. The gutsiest performance of the day belonged to first-block leader Keith Sharp, who bowled despite receiving news Saturday night his father had passed away. Sharp opened the morning with games of 241 and 239, and had a high game of 255 in the fifth game of the day. He finished second overall with 3,477 and will continue to bowl in honor of his father.
"I talked to him two days ago and he told me if I was ever going to win a tournament to win this one for him," Sharp (Orlando, Fla.) said. "He bowled against Dick Weber and was a big fan of his."
Rounding out the top five were Sam Zurich (Grant, Fla.) in fourth with 3,393 and Hugh Miller (Seattle, Wash.) in fifth with 3,390. Both Zurich and Miller are rookies on the PBA Senior Tour, but with one title this season Zurich is the leading candidate for PBA Senior Rookie of the Year.
The top 24 advance to round robin match play Monday and Tuesday with the top five bowlers after 24 games advancing to the stepladder finals Tuesday evening at West County Lanes at 6 p.m. CST. The winner will take home $9,000 and a berth in the 2008 H&R Block Tournament of Champions, one of four Majors on the Denny’s PBA Tour.

Parks leads the field in PBA Senior Dick Weber Invitational after Day One
Kenny Parks described his day Saturday in the 2007 PBA Dick Weber Invitational as a roller coaster. Unlike a lot of the field, Parks roller coaster ride ended on a high. Picture courtesy of PBA LLC.Parks overcame a tough start to take the lead after the first day of qualifying in the final event of the 2007 PBA Senior Tour season, finishing with a 1,824 eight-game pinfall.
The PBA Senior Tour rookie needed a strong performance in last week's PBA Senior Decatur Open to qualify for the invitational, which is open to all PBA Senior Tour champions, PBA Hall of Famers over the age of 50, the top 75 in the PBA Senior Point Rankings and bowlers who have competed in eight events this season.
"Last week I felt like I could win that tournament but you have to win your matches," Parks (East Chicago, Ind.), who finished 14th last week, said. "I had to make match play last week just to make this tournament. I've made match play in four of the five events I've bowled in but hadn't bowled enough tournaments. I was 96th going into last week and ended up 53rd so I was happy just to be here."
Parks got off to a slow start with a 171 in the first game before bouncing back to shoot over 200 in each of his final seven games. He averaged 250 over his final four games, and nearly fired the first 300 of the tournament in game eight, striking with his first nine shots before settling for a 277.
"That was a roller coaster ride. I can't believe I shot that much," Parks (East Chicago, Ind.) said. "I was lost the first game because I tried to play what I was playing yesterday (in practice) but I couldn't because the ball was reading (the lane) so quickly and would roll out when it made a turn. The equipment I used wouldn't work. I just took my hand out of the ball and started stroking the ball. It went straight as an arrow."
Mike Pullin, who is looking for his first PBA Senior Tour title since 2000, led the early squad and finished second overall with 1,762. After throwing a Brunswick Arch he estimated was eight years old and struggling over the first three games, he switched to a Brunswick Fury drilled by fellow PBA Senior Tour bowler Tom Carter. Pullin went on to average 251 over his next four games with the ball before finishing with a 179.
Like all bowlers competing this week, Pullin (Rochelle, Ill.) said it would be a thrill to win the event named after Dick Weber, the PBA Hall of Famer and legend from the St. Louis area (left, archive picture)."It's really a great honor to bowl in this tournament because Dick was a good friend of mine," Pullin (Rochelle, Ill.), the 1999 PBA Senior Rookie of the Year, said. "I put on a Senior regional event in Rochelle and Dick came up every year and he was the featured bowler, of course. To bowl in a tournament in his name is fantastic."
PBA Senior Tour rookie Hugh Miller (Seattle) is third with 1,748 while last season's PBA Senior Rookie of the Year Bob Kelly (Dayton, Ohio) is fourth with 1,738. Dale Eagle (Tavares, Fla.), who ranks fourth all-time with 10 PBA Senior Tour titles, rounds out the top five with 1,732.
A trio of PBA Hall of Famers are in the top 10 as Johnny Petraglia (Manalapan, N.J.) is seventh with 1,715, David Ozio (Beaumont, Texas) is ninth with 1,711 while Tom Baker (King, N.C.) is 10th with 1,696.
Ozio and Baker are in a heated battle for 2007 PBA Senior Player of the Year with this week's tournament marking the conclusion of the PBA Senior Tour season. Baker leads the Tour with two titles including a Major, but Ozio leads the PBA Senior Point Rankings, finishing in the top four in seven of 12 events.
The field will bowl another eight-game block Sunday after which the top 24 bowlers will advance to match play. Round robin match play takes place Monday and Tuesday with the final five bowlers squaring off in the stepladder finals Tuesday evening at West County Lanes at 6 p.m. CST. The winner will take home $9,000 and a berth in the 2008 H&R Block Tournament of Champions, one of four Majors on the Denny's PBA Tour.
