2007 WWC

Asbaty targets second Masters title at Women's World Championships

Bol Obispado in Monterrey, Mexico (Aug. 30 - Sept. 9, 2007)

2007USBCQDiandraAsbaty.jpg 2003 Masters champion Diandra Asbaty, United States, ousted All Events champion and No. 1 seed, Choi Jin A, Korea, three-games-to-one, Friday in the Quarterfinal at Bol Obispado in Monterrey, Mexico.

The 10-time Team USA member, who won her second World Ranking Masters title earlier this year, bowled four games over 200 and was only defeated in game #3, when the Korean fired a 279 game.

2007WWCTennelleMilligan.jpg Asbaty teammate Tennelle Milligan denied Mexico's bid for the first medal in the championship when she eliminated Adriana Perez, 3-1. Milligan, the sole player in the Round of 16, who swept her opponent, easily won the first game, but lost a low-scoring second game, 144-174. The Pan Am Games gold medalist came back with a 209-178 win in game #3 and ended the match with a huge 256-188 win.

Jazreel Tan from Singapore ended Europe's dream from a Masters medal, when she sidelined reigning European Masters champion Helen Johnsson, 3-1. Johnsson had just one game over 200 in game #2, which she won 213-192, but suffered three sub-par games and lost all of them.

The fourth Match between WWC Singles champion Shannon O'Keefe, United States, and 300-game shooter Kim Yeau Jin, Korea, went the distance. The American won the first two games by a wide margin but the Korean rebounded with three straight wins to turn the match and walk a way the winner, 3-2.

According to the rules the highest seed bowls the lowest seed in each round of the finals. Therefore one of the Americans, #2 Milligan or #14 Asbaty will have a shot at the gold medal as the Team USA teammates meet in the first semi-final.

"Even though we have to bowl each other, the positive thing is that we are going to get a shot to win another gold medal," said Milligan, who defeated Mexico's Adriana Perez 3-1 in the quarterfinals. "Neither of us came here to lose, so it's going to be a great match. The best thing is that our team wins either way."

In the other semi-final, #7 Tan and #11 Kim will decide the second finalist. The semi-final loser will share the bronze medal.

By advancing to the semifinals, Milligan and Asbaty assured that Team USA will medal in every event at this year's Women's World Championships. It's the first time the United States has accomplished the feat since 1971 and just the third time overall.

In addition to the Masters medals that are on the way, Team USA earned the bronze in doubles, silver in trios, silver in team, gold in singles and silver in all-events.
