Machnig cracks 1400-bar to take the lead in 5th Columbia 300 Vienna Open

Mike Machnig, Germany, became the first player in the 5th Columbia 300 Vienna Open, who cracked the 1400-bar, when he rolled a 1417 six-game series, a 236,17 average, Thursday in the fourth squad to move into the lead in the qualifying for the main event. Machnig started out with 226, 225 and 257 (708) and then missed a 237 triplicate by two pins as he finished with 237, 237 and 235.
Gal Shemer of Israel was second with 1387 and overtook previous leader Asgeir Thordarson, Iceland, by 13 pins. Thordarson slipped to third with 1374. Oliver Blasé, Germany, was close behind with 1367 pinfall total to move into fourth place.
Robert Skach (right) fell to fifth with 1362. Christian Provaznik, both Austria, felled 1356 pins, good for sixth place. Rounding out the top 8 are multiple Austrian champion Thomas Gross (7th, 1337) and Karel Kutina, Czech Republic (8th, 1336).
Two teams reached the 2700-plateau in Squad 4 to set the pace in the doubles event. Shemer and Provaznik combined for 2743 six-game total or an average of 228.58 en route to overtake the lead in the event. Machnig teamed with Franz Hahn (left), Austria, who added 1309 to take the second place with 2726 pinfall (227.17).

Ivonne Gross (left) is the top-ranked women in the field in 15th place with 1293 including 48 pins handicap. Heberle is the second-best women with 1254 in 19th place. The qualifying for the Vienna Open finals is contested as a unique doubles tournament. 10.230 Euro or approx. US$ 14,510 from the overall prize fund of 60.530 Euro ($85,850) will be given to the top 20 teams.
Each team rolls one six-game block. Unlimited re-entries with different partners are possible but each player can only cash once with the same partner. The team with the highest total pinfall including handicap will be declared the winner (no finals will be played).
The winners of the Doubles event will split 1.600 Euro or approx. US$2,270. World champions Martin Larsen and Robert Andersson, Sweden, are the defending champions.
Qualifying runs from Wednesday through Saturday and ends with the ultimate Desperado Squad on Saturday evening, Oct. 20.
A total of 68 players from the qualifying will advance to the finals starting on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 8am:
All but the top 8 qualifiers will bowl 6 games starting from scratch to cut to the top 24. Those 24 will be seeded 9-32 in the match play round of 32.
Match play rounds of 32, 16 and 8 are single-elimination, best-of-three games. The highest seeded player bowls the lowest seeded player, the second-highest seeded player vs. the second-lowest seeded player, etc.
The semi-finals and the championship match will be decided in one game. A major on the European Bowling Tour, bowlers will be competing for a top prize of 7.000 Euro ($9,930) and an overall prize fund of 60.530 Euro ($85,850).
