2007 Asian Rankings
Belmonte, Eun-Jung claim 2007 Asian Bowling Federation ranking titles
Jason Belmonte (left), the two-hander from Australia and Kim Eun-Jung (right), Korea, claimed the 2007 men's and women's rankings titles of the Asian Bowling Federation (ABF). Both players had to sit and wait for the results from the final ranking event, the 24th Southeast Asian Games in Thailand, as neither Australia nor Korea was eligible to participate.
Opposite to Eun-Jung, who led the women's division by a wide margin, it was a nail-biting time for Belmonte, who finally beat out Ryan Lalisang, Indonesia, for the men's title by a single point.
Belmonte finished the 2007 ranking season with 380 ranking points. Lalisang (left), the Doha Asian Games Singles champion, who lost the title match of the SEA Games Masters by a single pin against Remy Ong, Singapore, and failed to medal in the final event (5th in Mixed Doubles), ended up one point short with 379. It was the first ranking title for Belmonte and the first by an Australian in the 8-year history of the Asian Bowling Federation rankings.
While playing the final event of the European Bowling Tour in England, two-time Asian raking champion Wu Siu Hong (left), Hong Kong, slipped to third place with 347 total points. This marks the fourth consecutive year that Siu Hong, who won the rankings in 2001 and 2003, has finished third in the ABF rankings.
Yannaphon Larp-apharat (right), Thailand, earned 54 ranking points in the SEA Games to leap from sixth to fourth place with 293 points. Daniel Lim didn't receive any points in Thailand and slipped to fifth with 275. Zulmazran Zulkifli, both Malaysia, who was in 14th place with 167 total points before the SEA Games, earned 100 points in Bangkok, where he won a medal in all six events, rocketed to sixth place with 267 points overall.
Mubarak Ali Al-Muraikhi (left) is the sole Arab among the top 8. The Qatari landed in seventh place with 265 points. Alex Liew, Malaysia, amazingly got 68 points to beat out Hussain Al-Suwaidi for 8th place by 12 points, 247-235.
Kim Eun-Jung, who led the women's rankings most of the season, totaled 353 ranking points to become the first women's ABF ranking champion from Korea. Trailing Eun-Jung by 18 points to finish in second place was Ann-Maree Putney (right), Australia. The former World Masters champion, who won the 2007 QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup in Russia, accumulated 335 points.
4-time Asian ranking champion Shalin Zulkifli was in 8th place before the SEA Games, where she got 92 points to leap into third place with 306 total points. Choi Jin A (left), Korea, fell one spot to fourth with 290. Zulkifli's compatriot Zatil Iman made 40 points in Thailand to move up one spot into fifth place with 270 points. Angkana Netvriseth, Thailand, made the most impressive leapfrog from the women's SEA Games participants as she earned 95 points in Bangkok to leap from 12th to sixth place with 252 points.
Defending ranking champion Putty Armein (left), Indonesia, got disappointing 9 points in the SEA Games and fell from fifth to seventh place with 251. Vanessa Fung (right), Hong Kong, slipped from 4th to 8th place with 245. 2005 ABF ranking champion Wendy Chai, Malaysia, was not on the team for Bangkok and fell out of the top 8 and finished 9th with 224 points.
The top 8 men and top 8 women qualified for the 2008 World Ranking Masters at Senayan Bowling Sportainment Center in Jakarta, Indonesia from April 30 through May 6, 2008.
