Well-traveled team takes lead at USBC Open Championships
Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, NM, United States (Feb. 16 - July 7, 2008)
Bringing bowlers together from Alaska, Arizona and Nevada provided a winning combination for K & K Bowling Services 1 of Henderson, Nev., which moved into the Regular Team lead at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships on Wednesday. The group of experienced bowlers rolled games of 1,113, 1,056, and 1,039 for a 3,208 total at the Albuquerque Convention Center and slipped past Cambridge 1 of Feeding Hills, Mass., which previously held the lead with a 3,201.
L-R Ron Mohr, Phillip Platko, Chris Klerk, Adam Ishman, Andrew Cain.
Two-time Bowling Writers Association of America Amateur Bowler of the Year Andrew Cain led the group with 677 and was followed by Ron Mohr (674), Phillip Platko (649), Adam Ishman (620) and Chris Klerk (588).
"I'm really happy right now, even though it won't sink in for a while, said Cain, a three-time Team USA member who also was teammates with Clerk at Arizona State University. "We came into this knowing we could win, and at least for today, we sit on top of the leaderboard."
In the end, though, taking the top spot rested on the shoulders of K & K Bowling Services owner Platko and his partner Ishman. Ishman struck on three of his final four shots, while Platko finished with four consecutive strikes to secure the lead.
"All that matters is that I went from lost to found," Platko said. "It's good to know I can throw it for the cheese. This is really, really cool. I'm not a man of many words, but this is great. And doing this with friends makes it so much better."
While Platko and Ishman each traveled to Albuquerque from the Las Vegas area and Cain and Klerk, a former Junior Team USA member, made the trip from Scottsdale, Ariz., and Chandler, Ariz., respectively, Mohr joined the team from Eagle River, Alaska, an 11-hour flight away.
"We're all just excited to be here," said Mohr, a three-time Team USA member and a member of the 2001 USBC Open Championships Team All-Events winner. "Just coming down here for this tournament and spending time with these guys again is awesome. I'm ecstatic. Coming out here I knew we had a chance to win, and it's great to be on a successful team with guys who are also such good friends."
On Thursday morning, Brian Diede of Huron, S.D., made his own run at the top of the leaderboard and eventually settled into second place in Regular All-Events with a 2,113 total.
Diede rolled nine games of 209 or better on the way to 725 in singles, 703 in doubles and 685 in team. Edward Gallagher of Clarksville, Tenn., leads with 2,141.
Nevada bowler rolls first honor score at Roto Grip Sport Bowling Challenge
Les Shirwindt of Las Vegas strung together 11 consecutive strikes at the Roto Grip Sport Bowling Challenge on Thursday before the 4-10 split left him with 298, the first honor score of the year at the special satellite event.
The 55-year-old right-hander added 194 and took the lead for the day with a 492 two-game total, which is the fourth highest score of the year.
The Roto Grip Sport Bowling Challenge is being conducted on a special 12-lane setup adjacent to the 48 lane installation being used for the USBC Open Championships at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
The event features a unique two-game format similar to the satellite events that were part of the 2000 Open Championships in Albuquerque and the 2003 tournament in Knoxville, Tenn., and is being contested on a USBC Sport Bowling lane condition.
Competition is divided into two average-based divisions with daily and optional year-long prize funds.
Shirwindt is no stranger to success at the Open Championships and his 842 series in doubles at the 2002 event in Billings, Mont., was the highest individual series of the year.
