Clash of Champions Profiles: Lucy Sandelin, Tom Baker

BowlingsClashofChampionsLogo_small.jpg Bowling's Clash of Champions will bring together 16 champions of USBC events and the U.S. Open ranging in age from teenagers to seniors competing for $100,000 in prize money on national television.

The event will take place May 7-8 at the USBC Convention in Kansas City, Mo., and taped for broadcast on CBS Sports May 10 from 5-6 p.m. Eastern and May 11 from 4-5 p.m. Eastern.

As the unique made-for-television event Bowling's Clash of Champions, presented by the United States Bowling Congress and Strike Ten Entertainment, gets closer, USBC is profiling each of the 16 participants in the event.

Meet Lucy Sandelin and Tom Baker

* How they qualified: Lucy Sandelin claimed the title at the 2007 USBC Senior Queens in April, while Tom Baker won the 2007 USBC Senior Masters in June.

* About Bowling's Clash of Champions: The Clash will bring together 16 champions of USBC events and the U.S. Eastern.

2008CoCLucySandelin.jpg * About Lucy Sandelin: A 10-time Team USA member, Sandelin, 51, of Tampa, Fla., has extensive experience in international competition. She won silver and bronze medals at the 2003 World Championships and won the 1976 AMF World Cup. Sandelin also was the 1996 U.S. Amateur champion and won gold medals in singles and doubles at the 2007 Florida Senior Games.

* Sandelin's thoughts: "An event like this would be fun to watch in person but getting to bowl is priceless. Since we are all champions who love to bowl, my guess is the person who can control their nerves the best with a strong mental game will come out as the champion."

* About the USBC Senior Queens: Conducted concurrently with the USBC Queens, the USBC Senior Queens features a field of the country's best women bowlers ages 50 and older. First conducted in 2000, the Senior Queens featured a field of 160 players in 2007.

2008CoCTomBaker.jpg * About Tom Baker: Baker, 53, of King, N.C., has been a force on the PBA Senior Tour since turning 50 in 2004, winning four standard events and four majors. During that time, he has also continued to compete as an exempt player on the Denny's PBA Tour and has 10 career titles. Baker is one of just two players to win back-to-back USBC Senior Masters titles and his career PBA earnings of nearly $1.7 million rank ninth all-time.

* Baker's thoughts: "I think this is a great opportunity to bring all of the champions together and spotlight talent. I think everyone's chances are great, but each champion will come thinking he or she will win it -- that's part of a strong mental game."

* About the USBC Senior Masters: A major event on the PBA Senior Tour, the USBC Senior Masters is open to all USBC members ages 50 or older. More than 300 of the country's top senior players compete in the event each year for a prize fund that totals nearly $150,000, making it one of the richest events in senior bowling.
