Clash of Champions Profiles: Liz Johnson, Pete Weber

BowlingsClashofChampionsLogo_small.jpg Bowling's Clash of Champions will bring together 16 champions of USBC events and the U.S. Open ranging in age from teenagers to seniors competing for $100,000 in prize money on national television.

The event will take place May 7-8 at the USBC Convention in Kansas City, Mo., and taped for broadcast on CBS Sports May 10 from 5-6 p.m. Eastern and May 11 from 4-5 p.m. Eastern.

As the unique made-for-television event Bowling's Clash of Champions, presented by the United States Bowling Congress and Strike Ten Entertainment, gets closer, USBC is profiling each of the 16 participants in the event.

Meet Liz Johnson and Pete Weber

* How they qualified: Liz Johnson won the 2007 U.S. Women's Open in Reno, Nev., in October while Pete Weber was victorious at the 2007 U.S. Open in March in North Brunswick, N.J.

2008CoCLizJohnson.jpg * About Liz Johnson: In 2005, Johnson, 33, of Cheektowaga, N.Y., made history by becoming the first woman to win a PBA regional and finished second in a PBA national tour event. She is an 11-time PWBA Tour titlist, including the 1996 U.S. Women's Open title. Before joining the PWBA Tour, Johnson was a three-time Amateur Bowler of the Year, two-time U.S. Amateur champion and 1993 Collegiate Bowler of the Year at Morehead State.

* Johnson's thoughts: "I'm still learning more each day about the Clash, and I'm very excited to be a part of it. I know I will be around a lot of other great and talented bowlers. To me, that is a great honor."

* About the U.S. Women's Open: After a four-year hiatus, the U.S. Women's Open returned behind the support of the United States Bowling Congress in 2007. The event, which features the top professional and amateur women bowlers in the country, was broadcast on ESPN over the span of five weeks.

2008CoCPeteWeber.jpg * About Pete Weber: A PBA and USBC Hall of Famer, Weber, 45, of St. Ann., Mo., has won 34 career Denny's PBA Tour titles, including eight major titles. Weber, who has more than $3.1 million in career earnings, has won the U.S. Open four times and is one of only four men to complete the PBA's career Triple Crown (World Championship, Tournament of Champions and U.S. Open).

* Weber's thoughts: "This is a good event because it gives all levels of bowlers a chance to win in this format. I don't think I will win, though, because I don't usually do well with this format. However, I do have 34 PBA titles on my side."

* About the U.S. Open: A major on the Denny's PBA Tour, the U.S. Open features a field of nearly 500 of the world's top professional and amateur bowlers. Conducted on a flat oil pattern, the U.S. Open is considered one of the most demanding tournaments during the PBA Tour season.

* Next week: USBC will profile USBC Queens winner Kelly Kulick and USBC Masters champion Sean Rash.
